RMA'd my WD 36gb raptor. The status went to Delayed for around a week and a half which I was pretty bummed about since it was my main system drive.
Friday night, I get an automated email saying it's shipped.. check the model number.. WOOHOO! Getting a 74gb raptor.
So if any of you have failing raptors, it's worth it to RMA!
Also RMA'd my WD5000YS - 500gb raid edition - and got the newer WD5000AAYS which has 3 platters instead of 4. Seeing about 10mb/sec more read speeds!!

Congrats man! That's a great free upgrade! Too bad RMAing a 74GB won't get you a 150GB, eh? The new "AA" drives are better indeed. They also run a little cooler.
I replaced all my WD5000KS drives with WD5000AAKS pieces and the sustained write rate is 60-70MB/s!

that's nothing compared to the solid state drives. 800Mb/sec for reading and 600Mb/sec for writing

Nice! Yeah - gotta love newer revisions with fewer platters! I'd imagine they'll be running cooler too!
Just did some reading on the raptor, too bad I got the WD740GD.. the WD740ADFD has double the cache (16mb) and native sata instead of a PATA->SATA bridge. Oh well, can't complain!

Yeah I wanna see too. If SSD drives are so great, then why isn't the retail flooded with at least a single model?

.. because SSD is super expensive right now.. will be many years before it can compete to magnetic media for price/capacity

wicked deal on the RMA.
I once RMA'd a 200GB hdd and got a 250GB back. But that doesn't compare to yours :P

This happens all the time, With electronics they say it if it dies within the warrenty range tey will replce with the same product or one with similar value. I guess they don't make the 36gb anymore and the 74gb is worth the same price.

Congrats! Why did you RMA?
I RMA'd it because I thought it was failing, but later turned out it was the other drive in my PC! So I RMA'd that one as well.
RMA'd my raid drive because thought it was failing lol - but I think it was a SATA cable in the end!
oh well. :)

LOL and just how did you determine that the drive "was in the process of failing"?

The RAID drive? Because the port it was on in linux started spewing out a bunch of errors and the array was constantly getting rebuilt.
