How washable is such a thing? I'd worry it would have a 'smell/stain' memory when those stanky houseguests come around.

Answering my questions (below) I'm sure it's nice and all, but even on sale seems a lot to pay for a hunk of foam.
===================================
Q: What is the mattress cover made of?
A: 100% Polyester
Q: Is the mattress cover removable and washable?
A: Yes, the mattress cover is both removable and washable.
Q: What about the "plastic scent"?
A: All foam products have a slight scent at first which will dissipate gradually.
Air out True Sleeper for 48-72 hours, away from direct sunlight, to eliminate plastic scent faster. If the scent is still too strong for you, you might use Febreze in order to neutralize the "plastic scent".

Mine didn't came with the scent...
And yes it is very good. I feel better in the morning and that is what counts for me.
Dunno about other sizes , didn't check. For more info there is a HUGE thread on Anandtech forums regarding this subject.

These are absolutely awesome stuff. Personally though, i've never tried the Costco ones, but i've tried other immitation Tempurpedics, and they're just sweet. There's an occasional ebayer that sells geniune Tempurpedic mattress topper for about $200USD... i'm waiting for him to start selling again and i plan on picking one up.

Is it really that therapeutic? I mean, with most mattresses (especially memory foam mouthpads), the stuff contours to your body and stays that way forever. Wouldn't it be bad if you had bad posture?

Haven't tried this topper before but i'll attest to the fact of a decent mattress or topper to help get good sleep is so very important.
So, spending under 200 bucks to get better sleep is a no brainer ... especially if you aren't getting any ... sleep that is.

I found once a guide explaining which thickness is apropriate for you depending on your sleep position.
For ppl who sleep face up there was no restriction , for side sleepers was recommended 1.5-2" and for belly ones I forgot.
This matress is from COSTCO that means if it doesn't feel right you can return it with no hassle whatsoever.

You can get a foam mattress instead of the topper and you don't need the spring mattress as long as you have an appropriate base. It's very popular in Europe and Asia.
In North America people haven't figured yet that those 12" spring + foam supposedly "orthopedic" mattress and 10" boxspring look fit for an emperor but are completely useless. For most people a 4" foam mattress is more than enough. If you've tried a foam mattress before and hated it it's because there are many different kind of foam mattresses:
- 1lb are cheap and hard as a rock
- 1.8lb is decent and last 10+ years
- 2.2lb is top quality for beds and sofa cushions you sit on
Now within these main categories there are different softness:
For 2.2lb:
- type 1005 (compression 3237): soft
- type 1006 (compression 3944): firm
For 1.8lb
- type 1835 (compression ?): (didn't see any demo)
- type 1846 (compression 4248): medium
For a different firmness you can combine 1" soft on top and put 3" firm below.
Now you can go to a store that sells foam mattresses and they will make a cover for the foam similar to the surface of a spring mattress. Why don't all store sell foam mattresses? Because they cost less so the salesman's commission will be less than the expensive mattresses. And the stores that sell foam mattresses won't really tell you all I have written here in detail. If you shop around a 6" thick queen should be about 160$+taxes.
Now if you want to pay even less and you know exactly what you want (perhaps by visiting a few showrooms and asking about which kind of foam is in your favorite demo) you can try and go directly to the factory (and act like you work for one of those mattress stores). Look in your yellow pages. DomFoam's price for a 1.8lb 4" Queen was 91$ + taxes. You tell them something like 'Hi, I want a 4"x39"x78" type 1846', give a deposit, name and phone number, then come back about a week later. (Price may have gone up a bit since I went).
This will just be the foam, so you may want to put a cover on it. Sears catalog or web site has a selection of polyester and polyester-cotton for about 50$ for queen size.

I have a spring mattress with a memory foam topper and I like it a lot.
It should be kept in mind that foam is an insulator, so you'll feel warmer at night and you might perspire more. I would recommend getting a mattress pad made of natural fibres (such as silk) to dissipate body heat.
I can attest to the comfort of memory foam, however as one poster already said there are different firmnesses. Before I settled on my current foam I tried 2 different firmnesses.
It looks like a good deal though. Knowing what I know now I'd be all over it if I didn't already have one.

Just decreases the frequency of turning as your body is in a "pocket"...think of it as a being at a valley as opposed to being on a flat surface...a hammack is another exaggerated example...its hard to turn in those things.

Not "doesnt or can't" but decreases the "frequency". Mind you these studies come from hours of video observation of volunteers.
Wrt feather cushions, heat build up was the main problem.

Well, it decreases it because your body is more comfortable, so it doesn't toss and turn.
And why would heat build up be a problem with featherbed? Sounds like you're just spewling a bunch of BS.

I have circulation problems when I sleep. My arms and hands are often totally dead when I wake up. Often I wake up in the middle of the night with this.
I hear this memory stuff helps circulation when you sleep, would anyone happen to (or know of someone who has) have this problem and had it resolved by a memory foam topper?

Just Curious
I got a foam mattress topper a couple of months ago, can't remember the brand but it was main brand they sold at Sears.
It was a little tricky to cut because these things are really big and unweildy. But more significant just working with it and moving it around, it was generating some really wild static electric charges. You have to experience this to understand but I me and the whole room were getting big shocks and a general feeling of being electrically charged. It wasn't painful but it was kind of unsettling.
Anyway, I got a 4" thickness, which seemed to be the middle setting. I too was worried about bottoming on a 2".
The first bad point I noticed it is really added to the elevation of the bed. My bedding was still able to handle the added size, but the bed has a more Victorian ride height now. The second thing I noticed is it has a tendency of gradually sliding off center, so it has to be nudged back into place when the bed is made. Maybe a better cutting job on my part would have changed that?
I used to have a lot of discomfort during sleep. Joints that would kind of get stiff and by morning I'd be rolling a lot from side to side trying to avoid sensitive sore spots.
This mattress changed everything. I haven't had the stiff joint thing since I installed the mattress topper. In general it feels really great and cloud-like to sleep on. I absolutely love it.
This will sound like an info-mercial, but one unintentional drawback is I find myself sleeping in later and longer with this bed. I think perhaps its because I'm in a deeper sleep and not always repositioning away from the stiff arm or shoulder.
I have no idea how it will deal with summer heat, if it does or does not help circulation, or if it would be harmful to people that like a stiff bed. But I can say it's been an amazing change here...

The average person turns 150 - 300 times a night without even knowing it. I can't see the benifits of a memory foam if your body is constantly moving. Sound more uncomfortable than it would be comfortable.

I LOVE my memory foam mattress from Costco; I have 'bad knees' and this has helped tremendously. I feel less achy, and far less tired in the morning, I KNOW it has helped a lot. I didn't think I'd like it, but it is SO awesome. What's even more awesome is, I saved my receipt, and am going to go to Costco to get some $$ back. Thanks for bringing this post up again from the dead; because I get to save some $$ now. Do you think I can just show them the receipt at Costco and have them refund the money and buy it back at a lower price without having to lug in the mattress topper? I'm serious about this - though it seems logical, I know they don't have any exchange policy in place, all they can ever do is refund money for an item brought back, so, in the case where I want a coupon applied could I just show them my receipt? Thanks guys, and, if I were you, I'd RUN for this mattress topper. :)

I would guess they may give you a cash refund for the price difference, but then again maybe not. If that was the case it might be a good business practice to buy receipts and wait for sales to cash in. Hmmm, why didn't I think of this earlier. I suppose date of purchase may be anouther factor.

So far so good. Wanted one for awhile now and picked one up.
Comes in a fairly large box. Weight of the foam is suprising too. Good quality i guess.
Read the instructions on taking out the foam without damaging it and gently pried the fairly sticky layers from the vaccuumed packed compressed foam. Only took a few hours for the topper to fully expand, not the 24-72 hrs stated.
Slept great, especially for people that sleep on their side. Woke up late for work too :) lol

Get used to it. I feel like I'm 'sleeping on a cloud'
Sounds different than the Sears one though. There was no waiting for it to expand. It was essentially just a very firm spongy foam, expansion was pretty much instant as near as I could tell.

IMO the Sam's one is a much higher density and "memory"

a little confused with the stacking order...
If it comes with a cotton mattress pad cover that zip around the foam, is the pad then suppose to go directly under your sheets?
If so, will most conventional fitted sheets be big enough to fit the mattress, mattress pad and this mattress topper?
Comments/ Clarifications, please?

Yes the pad still goes under the sheets. The cover is just so it keeps it clean and also you can wash the cover. I had no problems with my sheets fitting over the pad. And there fitted sheets. :)

I have not seen the one at Sam's but can say from experience with Costco's it is of top notch quality and it's 4 lbs density is at the top of the list. What density is the one at Sam's and what brand and thickness. You can't get much better then the ideal 4lb density from what I've read.Do you actually use the one from Sam's?With the $25 coupon the novaform is a steal and worth every penny.

Not overly heavy' maybe 10 - 20 pounds only. The PILLOW that they make is FANTASTIC!!! It is $25, but is well worth it. I know I've said this before, but the mattress topper is worth every penny. The box is only about 4 feet by 2 feet, and 6 inches thick, perhaps, from what I remember; it is folded up when you buy it.

I could, but I object to paying full price when I need less. I'll just have to wait until I have room for a larger bed.
The instant rebate isn't available anymore (at least in the stores I've visited), but it's still a decent price at around $120-130.

I'm curious about these mattress toppers, as our mattress is starting to show its age, but we don't have the money right now for a whole new mattress set. Would these things give us a little more time?
Secondly, I don't have a Costco (or Sam's Club) membership, and have no need for one since I don't own a car (buying in bulk is a little silly on Public Transit). Are there any other retailers that have toppers of the quality that everyone is saying these are, at a similar price?
Someone mentioned Sears, and this is the only thing I've been able to find that seems to fit the bill there: Bodyform® 'Thermafoam' Mattress Topper (http://www3.sears.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?categoryId=10291&catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&langId=-1&rrc=1&productId=157714828&pe=11). Is this in the same league? The price isn't bad, but it's not worth it if it's no more useful than an more typical, less expensive piece of foam.
Same question again for the pillows. Obviously buying Tempur-pedic would be great, but the money just isn't there right now. What brand names are 'the best-of-the-rest'?

However, I'm not sure if I saw the right foam mattress at Costco in Vancouver today, is it the same brand, Novaform Sleep Inovations? Someone mentioned 4lb density, the one I saw is 3lb and it's only 2 inches thick. The box is a baby blue and it's a few inches thick and like 4 feet long by like a foot, and 129.98 or something, is that the right one? I thought the foam topper was not Novaform?

I was at Linen n' Things and they had the Sleep Innovations Queen or King 3 piece set of mattress topper and 2 pillows, all of it was of the memory foam variety for $89. They had about 12 boxes at the Sherway location. I have no idea how it compares to the Costco version. There's no such thing as a deal at LNT, so I can only imagine it's inferior. The CostCo Novaform pillow is $50 there alone.

Bought it as a gift, so is still in the box. Definitely a large and heavy bastard, hard to hide. :) So, no idea on the topper yet, but have been very happy with the pillow. At $100, it has to beat those $10-20 foam toppers that make little to no difference.

I think $40 off of a $150 price is hot.
Plus by now we can get more comments on pros/cons.
I have a question for anyone that owns one of these - Can it be cut down to a different size without destroying it? I need a twin size but have never seen that one offered. I have cut slab foam before but was not sure if these have some kind of special tapered edge on them that makes it easier to pull a fitted sheet down over them.

I would say it can easily be cut; but DON'T be a dummy like I was, and try washing the darn thing as to it's instructions; I had to squeeze all of the water out, it soaked it up like a sponge, and it would NOT dry very easily, it took days. Then, I ripped it with my fingernails in a lot of places by accident, trying to maneuver the thing. So... buy it, cut it up, I'm sure it will be fine.
But whatever you all do with these things; don't, I repeat, do NOT wash them in 'mild soap and water, and squeeze out excess water.'
That being said, I LOVE mine. And mine's the less thick one than the new one they sell now. I also enjoy the pillow the make. My neck no longer hurts in the AM.
Edited to add: The terry cloth cover, very nice quality, is a tight fit with the main mattress, and our regular size elastic cornered sheets sometimes do slip off of both the bed mattress and the novaform mattress, so sometimes, we sheet up only the novaform one and it works well. I have to say though, I do notice the novaform one slips and slides a bit, upon getting up , I can sometimes see that it has slid over in one direction more so than the other. But, my arthritic knees hurt less, my husbands back hurts less, and I can honestly say it is the best purchase I have ever made. {As well as my Epson R200 photo printer, lol!}
'Good-buy!' ;)

I bought one of these a few months ago (just as they brought out the 2.5" one). We put it under the fitted sheet. As another person mentioned, sometimes the corners of the sheets will 'pop' off during the night. Not a big problem tho' as we now put on little elastics that hold the corners in place evne more.
I have to say that both my wife and I absolutely LOVE this product - not because we sleep any better or my back hurts less - just because it is SO COMFORTABLE. Getting in to bed with one of these things is an absolute pleasure. I notice it the most when I travel and have to sleep on a bed without a topper on it - you can fell the various pressure points on your body.
Problem is that now we have to buy one to have at the cottage in the summer - no way we're going to sleep up there without one. That's why I'm glad to see this $40 off coupon...

One good thing too, about these mattress toppers, is that they retain body heat EXTREMELY well; when my husband gets out of bed around 6AM, I roll right over to his side, and the heat from where he was stays for a long time.

Just so you know. When I first got one of these I just loved it but I have found after about 6 months the foam goes much like a normal foam mattress. It is still fairly comfortable but not like when it was new.
I have tried out a true temperpedic in the showroom and they are much stiffer than the topper even when new. The topper will give you a much better nights sleep for a few months but I dont think it really can be compared to the real thing.

OK i bought mine yesterday and didnt know about the coupon book, so i went to my local costco and asked to have them sent to my address and picked one up at the same time.
they said just bring back my reciept and they will make a price adjustment when the coupon is valid
$145.99 + tax = $166.42 - $40 = 126.42
thats even cheaper than the smaller sizes sell for before tax

how's this compare with Ikea's foam mattresses?
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=3&productId=41382&langId=-15&parentCats=10103*10142
They claim it "adjusts" too.
This looks more like the actual mattress replacement as compared to a mattress topper.

Just a note to everyone interested in memory foam to make sure you shop around, and do your research. I have heard some bad things about the Costco memory foam (novafoam). I have never heard anyone get actual stats on the topper (ILD, etc) and I don't think its great quality stuff.
I've been putting together a "cheap-o-pedic" bed (a'la FatWallet) for the past little while (one step at a time), and decided to go with the Foamex for the top comfort layer. From all my reading, it seems worth a little bit extra hassel to get a good quality top layer. Sensus or Reflex seem to be the top choices.
These may have been posted earlier, but anyone who's interested can find tonnes of opinions (and a few actual facts) at the following links:
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?start=0&catid=18&threadid=320543
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=798948&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear
anyway, YMMV so good luck, ;)

my review of it so far.
very heay and dense.
need to air it out (harsh chemical smell) and let it fully expand for a day or so.
very soft and comfy.
I have only slept on it one night, took some getting used to. felt pretty goo this AM tho, seemed to help my bad posture a bit as i "felt" taller and more upright. maybe im imagining it but I'll know for sure in a few nights.
didnt feel tired this AM either like i usually do. coincidence? maybe.
hell, its only $100 or so after costco coupon. It'll make a good guest bed, or i can return it. Its worth trying.

I repeat. The Costco Novafoam is great for the first few months. Then the foam gets weak and is not much different from a regular foam mattress topper. Still you get a great sleep for a while.

Sears catalog or web site has a selection of polyester and polyester-cotton for about 50$ for queen size.
if you could recommend any places to get ahold of let me know. thx.
also does anyone know any good places in calgary to check out the foam matteresses? I have seen a few but nothing that great.

Aren't they both a piece of foam which you lay on top of your matress?

I've been sleeping on mine for the past few days and so far I like it. At first it took some getting used to but it does feel very comfy and you feel kinda "enveloped" by the foam.. Did not feel tired and achy as I do most Sundays due to physical work I do on weekends. If it flattens out, I've got my receipt and we all know how great Costco is with their return policies.

For those suggesting to just have a foam as a mattress..
Well, hovering around 200lbs and being this tall, then adding females to the bed = crushed foam + uncomfortable and/or hitting the floor/hard box.
That's why I'm thinking $499 or was it $599 for the Ikea set is a good deal. (foam + mattress + box/ all queen).
But, I want to compare the ikea foam(which is their "topper") to this "topper", has anyone used an Ikea bed and if so what's your thoughts on it. Guess I'll use malaca's stats and bug Ikea for more numbers.

I didn't have a coupon either but the girl at the checkout went into some storage bin underneath the cash register and scanned it for me.
Next time, you should just tell them that Costco never sent you the coupons or go to the customer service desk and request a book.

I got one of these a queen on sale. I love it and my wife hates it. For me it really helps with the circulation in my arms as I tend to sleep hard and cut off my circulation. My wife on the other hand sleeps on her stomach and finds that it really is making her lower back sore. I will probably have to return it. Also I have been having a hard time keeping the kids out of my bed since we got it.... they always want to fall asleep in our bed with this mattress pad.

:?: Alright.. I know I am resurecting this thread from 6 feet under, however, has anyone seen this deal go on special recently at costco. I am looking to purchase one of these and based on the replies, everyone is for the most part quite pleased
Now the fun part.. I need a California King Size. Seems like no one carries these in Canada. The normal King is 4 inches wider and 2 inches shorter, so I may have to make do and cut it and live with 2 inches shorter in length
Anyone have any ideas or comments on what I could do and any sales from Costco they can recall. If I do end up cutting one, Anyone had any experience in doing so.
Thanks for your help

Hi,
Thanks. I just came back from buying one (Queen size) for $98.99! ($35 off, but not really as Costco screws customers on instant rebates - calling them coupons where there is no coupon in this case (not in the booklet and sign says "instant rebate, NOT coupon), thus sending the government more of our hard earned tax money). Their accounting practices sux. Onl;ine it's approx $10 more but includes delivery ($109.99).
Anyway, after taxes it was $116.xx, so pretty happy with that.
Thanks for the heads up on this sale. They were selling pretty well as I counted 4 other people in lines had this in their carts. The Downsview location had approx. 20 left as of 12:15pm.

So comfy that you really don't want to get out of bed.
One thing though, try and follow the instructions to let it form for 3 days. It says 24-72 hours. The longer the better.
