I recently purchased the Linksys WRT54GL from the Dell's sale...w/ firmware v.4.30.7 (2006), and i've been gettin' good connections for the past week until 2 nites ago, where the router could simply not work properly. MSN is still fine, big name websites (yahoo, google) was good, but minor websites (forums) were not able to be connected. newsgroup was really really slow. everytime when this happens (probably 2-3 times a day), i would have to unplug power off the router and re-plug back in. tonite, i've updated the latest firmware v4.30.11, but still expereincing very slow d/l from newsgroup...less than 100kb/s, where i used to reached 1.1mb/s @ peak.
and i havn't flash the tomatoe software or the DDWRT to this Linksys router yet....as i thought it wasn't necessary yet.....
i'm w/ Rogers Extreme FYI, so what could be the problem? hardware defect?
Please advice!

Your question was answered in the thread found in the Hot Deals forum. You have to flash to a 3rd party firmware, otherwise you're limited by what Linksys has coded. Connections in the Linksys firmware are not recycled properly, so you will hit the upper limit within days. The problem isn't apparently immediately, but does exist.

in my experience, linksys routers w/oem firmware don't like super-heavy internet users too much. (but some have had luck with it).
I've recently switched exclusively to DD-WRT.
two bridged GL routers shared between 11 wireless users + one LAN. QoS limiting P2P and everything runs smooth as butter. lovely!

The whole point of this model is to be flashed to Linux (Tomato/DDWRT/etc), that's what the 'L' at the end stands for. :D
You'll get much much better performance out of it running one of these firmwares, along with many more options. From what I understand Tomato is the most user-friendly while remaining extremely powerful.

flashed to DDWRT, everything seems to work fine....
in newsgroup i'm avg. d/l speed @ 800ish kb/s...
peaked @ 1.3mb/s~
thx for the help!

Get rid of the Linksys firmware and go with www.dd-wrt.com
Its the best you win!

I have a 3 week old new WRT54GL ver 1.1 from DELL.ca
Loaded Tomato 1.10 firmware on it.
Using it as a wired router for 3 computers
Recently, 2 of the computers disconnect after about 10-20 hours of computer being on.
I want to flash to DD-WRT firmware to see if this problem will get fixed.
So, Which file do I download on the DD-WRT website:
this one?
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/stable/dd-wrt.v23%20SP2/dd-wrt.v23_sp2_standard.zip
That's all I need?
Then I go into Tomato's Admin > Upgrade section and upload this file, then press upgrade?
Then the router will be flashed with dd-wrt and I can start logging in?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Can I reflash it with Tomato 1.10 if I don't like it or the problem doesn't go away?

I have Tomato firmware on a new WRT54GL too. I have no problems with it... Did you up the timeout and max connections?

I have no idea how to do that. Where do I change those in the Tomato settings?

Are you doing a lot of P2P? Can you explain the problem further? It doesn't really make a lot of sense for a wired connection to disconnect.

No, the past week, no P2P
One of the computer always disconnects after like 10 hours. I restart the computer and it's connected to the internet again. But after a while being on, it will disconnect. It's even freshly reformatted with Windows XP SP2.

You could change the network cable. The router might be faulty. You can always try DD-WRT to see if it changes, but I don't think firmware would be an issue.

Go into Device Manager (Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware) , goto networking, right click your network card and goto properties. Now look for power management tab or something similar to that.
Play around with the settings there (I just disabled power management on my network cards). I have one machine that has been running for 35 days now, no issues what so ever.
Its definately not the router if you can reboot and get a connection back, its the computer going into power saving mode.
I have a WRT54G v 2. with Tomato 1.09. (not much of a change in 1.10 for me to go and upgrade it and have to input all the settings back in)

well u can upgrade without putting your settings back in
even though it's better to do it clean, it'll still work fine.

Same here. With the upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08, Jon suggested you go to your Port Forwarding settings and click save to rewrite the settings. Sometimes, the newer firmwares change how things are changed, so your old settings may not be effectively in odd situations. It's always better to use finger settings (setting everything by hand), but in the case of 1.09 -> 1.10, the backup and restore of configs should work properly.
