Hello folks.

I was wondering if I could get your thoughts on these 2 computers from BB.
The computer will be used for media to my home theater 95% audio and a little video.
Maybe some minor game play, but the use of photoshop is always going on.

The one on the left is a Gateway GT5428 Intel Pentium D 935 Dual Core 3.20GHz. This is the description.
-ntel Pentium D 935 and 3.20GHz Dual Core Processor Speed
-250GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM, 8MB Cache)
-1024MB DDR2 memory for multitasking power, expandable up to 2GB.
-DVD+/-RW 16X Multi-Format Dual Layer Optical Drive
-Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 224MB Shared
-I/O Ports: VGA Output, 2 x PS/2 Ports (Keyboard and Mouse), 6 High-Speed USB 2.0 Ports (2 front, 4 back), 1 x RJ-45 Ethernet Port, 1 x RJ-11 Modem Port
-Other Software: Microsoft Works 8.5, Microsoft Office 2007 Home Student (60-day complimentary trial period), Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition 2006(includes 60-day Digital Image Standard 2006 trial), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Gateway Connect, BigFix

The one on the right is a Compaq AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.0GHz Computer Refurbished.
The dauntingly powerful AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 3800+ combined with 1GB of memory delivers the processing power you need to run multiple applications at the same time, without bogging down system resources.

A large 200GB hard drive offers ample room for all of your work-related documents, digital photos, MP3s and hours of video.

-The GeForce 6150 LE/nForce 430 chipset with 128MB of dedicated memory runs graphic-intensive applications like games and fast-moving movies seamlessly so you can enjoy them to their fullest capacity.
-The integrated dual layer 16X DVD +/-RW optical drive lets you listen to music CDs, watch DVDs and even burn your own up to 8GB in size on a dual layer DVD. The innovative LightScribe feature allows you to etch your own customized labels directly onto the discs.
-7 USB 2.0 and 2 Firewire ports allow for the easy connection of external devices and the speedy transfer of information. A built-in 9-in-1 media card reader lets you download images and other data to your computer directly from your memory cards, without the use of a digital camera.
-This model comes fully-equipped with the all new Windows Vista Home Premium Edition operating system.

I will probably be getting a another vid card and an external soundcard in the near future.

TIA
Mike

The Athlon setup is superior.

The Pentium D setup creates a lot of heat, and the performance is not greater despite the higher clock speed.

Furthermore, it seems like the Athlon computer tower is more expandable.

In terms of graphics, they both suck with integrated graphics and shared memory. Might want to put in a little more RAM.

Between the two, I would go for the refurbished X2 for $299.99 and I would double up the RAM.

X2 3800+ is a muuuuuucccccchhhhhh more efficient CPU than Pentium D 935 ...

Thanks guys.
Shows how much I know, I thought the p4 was far superior to the AMD.
I guess I will stick to home theater and cars.

As long as the video is better than my p3 1.2 with an ati 9000 pro I think I shoud be o.k.

Intel Core 2 or Pentium E, yes. Pentium D, no. They're very inefficient processors based on old netburst (P4) technology that ran out of steam years ago.

I have 2 of the x2-3800 machines from BB, and no complaints. For $315 +tax (shipping included), I think it's the way to go. If you wanted the more powerful Acer system, I'd order it from NCIX, not CC, as you can get a better deal ($50 less, no PST, but add delivery fee)

the X2 box for shure ..... but the 1 tdot points out is the better buy imho ... the fact its 299 is cause it is using the DX8 barly compatible onboard video on the bb one that is why its so low ... find 1 with the AMD690G - Radeon X1250 Pro onboard video & you'd be much happier & have close to if not abit better video then your 9000 Pro (kick a$$ card I might say as I had 1 back in the day :) )

Hi guys.

Would just like to say thanks to everyone for helping the new guy(me) out.

Alright guys I just got a little bonus from work and have another few dollars to spend or add to the purchase if possible. Let's ay $750 with taxes.

Here is the dilema.
Would you suggest something totally different or slightly better, faster.
I was thinking about buying the same computer and purchasing an external(less interference)M-Audio sound card. This also let's me take measurements of my speakers and the audio in my room.
