View Full Version : Re-soldering resistors on Radeon 9700?

So a while back I tried to take off the heatsink of my Radeon 9700 and the resistors around the gpu ended up coming off because of thermal compound that spread and hardened. Is it possible to re-solder these back on and make the card work again?
I haven't actually tried to use the card since I did this but I'm assuming it won't work very well with these resistors off.

I had a similar accident about 2 years ago with a Radeon X850XT PE. I had a local audio shop/repair place fix the card in 15 minutes for free. :cheesygri
As long as the component that came off didn't get damaged, re-attachment will always work (unless it's a socket-type thing like the GPU). :)

above is the image of the gpu. Circled in blue are the resistors that came off.
I'm wondering if anyone else has tried to re-solder these back on and how difficult it really is. I don't solder very often so I will probably struggle with something as small as these components but I figure the card is dead anyway without these so I may as well give it a try.
Looking at the area a little more it looks like I'll have to be extra careful not to overlap solder onto the other electrical connections.

The resistors are surface mounted. Soldering will not be too hard, but you need a fine point soldering iron and a very steady hand. You don't want to get any solder past the points where the resistor is soldered. It looks like there are a lot of traces around it and even though they should be under coating you can still short them out if you get solder all over them.

Guess I'll give it a whirl on the weekend. Will update when I've tried it :D
