View Full Version : Vote to delete thread

I think I originally posted this in a thread after someone posted spam...

But with this large community and so many active members, what do you think about this?

Members can "vote" (or mark, or whatever) a thread as, for example, spam. When... say 20 people do this, then the thread gets deleted.

To prevent abuse things could be restricted like only people with 500+ posts or something have the authority to do it..

What do you think?

Definitely not.

There are far too many immature people on this site, and yes, many of them have large post counts.

I think the OP should have the ability to delete his own thread. There are way too many blank unused threads on here.

As for voting out other peoples threads, hell NO. This isn't craigslist.

Maybe allow the delete, but the mods can review the threads that have been deleted?

Allowing threads to be deleted automatically (without moderator review) is in invitation for abuse. And if you include a moderator review in the process, then it's not really any better than the "Report this Post" function we already have.

I think it *could* work, but I would say only members above a certain post # can do so. Once done the mod's can review and if it was wrongfully deleted action would be taken on all the people that marked it.

Its faster and user controlled. If theres a ban on bad delete policy it could take off.

I guess there are immature people with large post counts, but certainly criteria could be based on more than just post count.

Maybe people could be made into something below moderator. People the admins view as a positive influence on the community and have the power to vote to delete a thread. But they really don't hold all that much power since X other members with the ability would also need to vote too.

I'm just thinking of the scenario. I think the idea of community moderation can absolutely work, it just needs some tweaks

u should be able to request to delete tread and let admin check. then delete :)

That is how it currently works. You "report this post" then an admin can check it and delete it. Thing is it can take more time to be taken care of

Terrible idea.

Please, don't say TOO much on why you think that

Voting for a thread to be deleted? Yes and no.
What if you're hated and everyone votes you off ...
What if there's a bunch of parents and I'm talking about 50 Cent's album and they don't like it.

There's a lot of reasoning AGAINST IT ... the logic is there, people on mass do not agree with the thread, get rid of it. But, I think we'd only need this IF we didn't have active moderators. That way, 1 moderator could come in and delete what was voted for and they're still "doing their job."
However, I think WE DO have active moderators (and many at that) so that to me is not a concern.

On a side note, besides "Report this thread" or whatever that's about, I'd like the function to be able to delete a thread. I do what I can by erasing but its timely when I'd rather just delete the whole thing. Sometimes I put up information that's sensitive or timely and really, I'm going to go back and take it off whether you like it or not. Some of the stuff I post is THAT type of information. I would like the ability to delete my own threads or delete a post but since that's not allowed, I deal with it how I can.
Edit - Select All - Delete - Save.

The Politics/Religion Forum would be blank if this idea gets implemented.

I think the OP should have the ability to delete his own thread.

Scenario: Member starts a thread, possibly flame-bait material. A crowd jumps in and legitimately bashes the OP for being stupid/a tard/uninformed. OP deletes entire thread in hopes of making it all go away. Flamefest continues in other threads.

A user should be able to delete their own thread if, for example, there are less than 3 replies. :)

Now there are way too many "conditions".

Less than three replies
More than 500+ posts
Minimum 20 "votes"
Less than X number of views

Give me a break. The post reporting feature works well. nsx is a very quick moderator (though not the only one, just an example), and is usually ontop of things. Telling the community that they don't have "authority" unless they rack up 500 posts is ridiculous.

I was talking solely about deleting your OWN post.

This kind of democracy does not work here, especially with this crowd. And you never see that kind of idea in other forums. Maintenance is best left to the mods, and they are doing a fine job here as it is.

It was simply a random idea that popped into my head.. so often you see posts on all forums "in before lock"... lol

Yea, it's a cheap +1 thing. And it's hardly a type of vote; more like trolling? I dunno..

Not once someone quotes it. Deleting your own thread would solve that.
