I received an offer on a domain name I have, and I have agreed to sell it to the buyer. I have no idea how to facilitate the actual sale, though, having never done this before. The buyer doesn't seem to know either, he just wants the domain.

Any idea where I can start?

paypal?

I think he means transfering the domain to the new owner.

I don't have any idea either, but do you know what registration service it's under? I think they have the tools for changing the owner name and address. You can also point it to the new owners DNS servers.

If the domain name is a .com/.net/.org/.us/...
you can probably "push" the domain to the purchaser. A push is simply a transfer from your account to another account with the same registrar. If your buyer doesn't have an account at your registrar he should be able to sign up for one at no cost.
The exact procedure depends on who the registrar is, but their FAQ should explain their domain management interface.

If the domain name is a .ca then your purchaser will need to request a registrant transfer through your registrar and will be charged the equivalent of a years renewal (this transfer will add a year to registration period)

Get the $$$ first.

Thanks, I'll have a look. It's regisered with 1and1.com. In their FAQ on selling, it basically just says to list it on seta.us

1&1 dealt with them once a couple years ago = never again.

Don't know 1&1 procedure for a "push" - not sure they even have one.

If I were your buyer I would want to transfer to another registrar. If he does then he can request a transfer through the new registrar.
He'll need the "authorization code" or "epp code" which you need to get either by requesting it from 1&1 or from your domain control panel at 1&1.
It'll cost him a yearly renewal fee, but he'll have a year added to registration period and he will not have to deal with 1&1.

should be looking at faq on transfers
