It's official: Microsoft has just announced that Bungie Studios will be embarking "on a path to become an independent company.
According to Bungie, the developer will become an independent company, but will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for future Halo titles.

... and the s**tstorm hits.
It's good to know they're still doing Halo (for now) but other IPs are a different matter. The whole "leash" word they're using definitely sums up what's happening here. Consumer won't see any changes PR speak is good for a laugh. Wait till Bungie stuff show up on the PS3. That'll be fun times for an Xbox 360 fan.

Brian Jarrard, Community and Franchise Director of Bungie, talking about the split with Kotaku
Bungie is privately owned by Bungie, not Microsoft. We are Bungie, LLC now.

Interesting, the Halo DS was true. Shame MS didn't pursue it.
That's a license to print money.

Sorry:
Finally, we can put "Halo DS" to bed. There's been rumours, "proof" and heresay flying around the place for years now, culminating in this week's "footage" of the game. Thankfully, during his little chat with Crecente earlier today, Bungie's Community and Franchise Director Brian Jarrard clears up the whole mess once and for all:
This rumor has been circulating for a while and as you know we even saw some real life screens and assets this week. Ultimately it's up to Microsoft to decide if and when they take Halo to a different platform. That particular demo was in fact created and I believe it was an unsolicited pitch a long time ago but nothing ever came of it.
Done. Finished. It may have been "real" in the sense you could touch it. But not real in the sense it had nothing to do with Bungie, and was little more than elaborate, digital fan mail.

Well, they'd have to get it from IGN.
Who cares if its one stage, I bet multiplayer would be really fun. :)

Sony fanboy's...
what if thats his honest opinion? that makes him a fanboy?
Warhawk is truly is a great online experience, but i haven't played Halo (nor do i want to) so i can't compare.

All this amounts to is a bunch of internal changes. Bungie won't be developing games for other platforms.

Unless Warhawk has a good single player experience as well, it is unfair to compare the two. While I haven't played Warhawk, I have played UT2004, and I loved the vehicle-oriented gameplay, so I will probably like Warhawk over Halo 3 as well.

His remark (opinion as you said) is irrelevant to this thread, and I’ve seen that kind of attitude in here before.
Example:
Q: Need to decide between XBOX Pro or Elite.
A: Buy a PS3
I guess it doesn’t make you a fanboy, just ignorant

Yeah, you’re right, ignorant would have been a better word; so I had it replaced.

Bungie is great, but has been restricted by Microsoft.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Bungie is a pretty good dev, but they were almost ready to drop Halo when they were independently developing it (as they commented in the Halo 2 bonus DVD), and Microsoft really pushed it through and helped shape it through the various transitions the game went through. Microsoft was very hands-on with Bungie, but that isn't really a bad thing, as Bungie really needed it.

Exactly. It's really naive to think MS was actually a bad influence or restricted Bungie with Halo. They bought the studio, and they made Halo into more than what it deserves. There is no way Halo 2 and 3 should get the sales numbers it deserves.
I can understand Bungie wanting to be independent again, but for them to backstab or criticize MS (like the *******s at Epic now do), is lame.

Oh c'mon. Mark Rein changes his brand underwear at whomever paid him last.
At this stage, it's Sony giving him lots of attention since they want UT3 out ASAP.
When Gears of War 2 ramps up, you can bet he'll have his hands held out looking for a handout (though he doesn't need it) and start singing MS's praise again.

For anyone with hopes of Bungie making games for other platforms after the split from M$, here are some highlights from a recent interview
• Bungie has no plans to design for any platform other than Xbox 360.
• Bungie has no plans for an XBLA title (though we're positive that Halo Wars: Evolved would sell like mad).
• The "pause button [is] firmly pressed" on Halo film.
• Master Chief is gay.
