I'm thinking of getting a DSLR, and with the exchange rate the way they are, getting it in US would save a fair bit of $. I know that under NAFTA, there are no tariffs on US made products so am curious if the Canon XTI or the Nikon D80 are made in the US? If not, are there any other comparable models that are?

Nikons and Canons are made in Japan. This includes d80 and the XTi.

Most Nikon DSLRs are made in Thailand, actually.
I think in practice, duty is rarely charged on electronics.

He could always chuck the box, packaging just in case.

My friend's Nikon is made in Japan, its a D80. Did they started to make them out of Thailand?

My D40 was made in Thailand. Seems common for the D80's too: http://www.google.com/search?q=D80+Made-in-Thailand

First batch is usually Japan. Afterwards it gets pumped out in masses from Thailand.

Even the D200s are made in Thailand.

digital SLRs do not get charged duties when they're being imported. they only get taxed.

Includes ones that are made in the USA, China, and Japan (since those two are "favoured" nations")

How about no?

A lot of work is done in Malaysia and Thailand. Kodaks are made in the USA? I wouldn't think so.
