Was looking to get this flash. Now, I've been told by somebody that I can't use this flash as a master - can only be used as a slave. Is that true? Does anybody own this flash and can give me some inputs/suggestions. Thanks!

Yes, it can only be used as a slave in a multiple flash setup. It was the first flash I ever bought. I found it to be one of the best that Canon offers. It is a bit weaker than the 580 but does the job. I find my 580 is great but for the price different not really worth it. I rather mix a bunch of 430s with pocket wizards if I want the wireless feature. I also have a 420ex. The 430 is definitely worth the extra money. LCD screen and one button swivel/tilt feature is amazing, not to mention the added 14mm screen. The battery door is way more intuitive than the 420 and less susceptible to breaking.

If you have the money buy the 580. If you have really nice wide glass and need the compatibilty get the 580ex mk2. If you want something versitile that wont break the bank get the 430...

I'd suggest the 580 EX Mk I. More control over the flash than the 430EX. And you can find the 580 EX Mk I online now for very cheap, in the sub $400 range, including in our own BST. I use the 580 EX as a master, and the 430 EX as a slave for dual-lighting.

Thanks for all your inputs....I think I will get the 430EX for now and when the time comes I will get the 580...

Another vote for the 430. It's really cheap now with the dollar at par. You can always add a 580 later and use the 430 as a slave. The 430 is adequate for most jobs; but if, for example, you're using a diffuser under higher ceilings, you might need something bigger.

Xti,Grip,2Batteries, 70-200 F4L IS, 430ex +4AA is getting heavy as I like to shoot with a handgrip.

Can't imagine shooting with those 1D monsters !
