I just purchased an xbox, and would like to activate my xbox live account with this username.

I read somewhere that I'll only get my 1 month free if I register through the console? Which means I'll have to pick a new name and everything?

Is this true? If so, can I just delete this account and start it again through the console?

Yes, you'll need to create a brand new profile to get the free month of live.
