cold for me....
1) intel GMA950 graphics
2) Acer laptop...
3) Last year's laptop.... we're at Santa Rosa now, Yonah is 2 gens old. Doesn't mean much performance wise, but still. You're buying something old.

I thought T2450 (2.0 GHZ) outperformed both Intel T2080 (1.73 GHZ) and AMD TK-53,no?
I'm not too excited over this deal either,I bought the DV2412 a few weeks back for $649 which I think was a better deal.
This system closely resembles the specs on HP DV2404 which was also on sale recently for $599 @ BB with the exception of the CPU ( T2450 vs TK-53).
Personally I take speed over graphics when it comes to laptops of this nature (considering what task I expect the machine to do).
But brand wise I agree,Acer vs HP could be a deal breaker for many.

Futureshop has a similar model, but with 80GB of Hd instead of 160GB for $549.
I've had great luck with Acer laptop (and desktops) and this price, it is fairly attractive.http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10089808&catid=

80 GB fills up immediately nowadays.
but 599 is pretty decent ... for something that isn't a Celeron or Sempron.

perfectly fine if you use your laptop for serious work and not gaming.
2) Acer laptop... not that big of a problem, i find with acer if you get one that works when you buy it, it will probably last just fine.
3) Last year's laptop.... we're at Santa Rosa now, Yonah is 2 gens old. Doesn't mean much performance wise, but still. You're buying something old.
try to find a santa rosa laptop for anything even remotely close to this price.
no one complained when they buy TK processors from AMD which are extremely entry level dual core, pretty much taking two semprons and smooshing them together.
this processor easily outperforms celeron, the dual core T2080 and anything AMD has pretty much up to the higher end TL series.
only bad part with this processor is that it dosn't support 64bit.. but of course i doubt anyone would go vista 64bit anytime soon considering the "love" for vista right now.

2.5 hour battery life. That seems pretty low. Nice deal though.

that is true, based on reviews, T2450 outperforms T5500 easily

Of course the T2450 would out perform any Celeron any day because a Celeron is budget processor. And Intel already knocked down the prices for their Santa Rosa processors earlier this month so you can get a Dell Vostro 14" notebook with a T5470 processor starting at $699+tax (depending on your preferences). I think that's a very good starting price for a newer processor.
The price is good but Futureshop and Best Buy are slowly introducing more Santa Rosa processors into their stores. This is why they are phasing out older generation processor notebooks (and selling them at low prices). There's a Santa Rosa processor 14" notebook going for $899.99+tax at Futureshop this week (in the flyer).

Not that I don't trust you, but I am trying to look for reviews comparing those processors. Can you give me the link?

2.5 hour battery life. That seems pretty low. Nice deal though.
I had this laptop in the past, it was just under 2 hours with Wifi on and medium brightness.
Nice laptop, but definitely not a gaming laptop, good for everyday work though

I find this really strange for a NEW'er CPU(65nm) laptop to only have <2 - 2.5 hours battery life.
my Pentium M 1.7(90nm) w/6cell gets the same battery life time and it is a huge 17" desktop replacement laptop.
LG 15" laptops 4+ years back got 5+ hours battery life.
are they using cheap batteries?
is everyone with similar specs laptops getting the same times?
Umm its an acer, a la 3 cell battery. What did you expect?

FS says this similar Acer to have 3hr battery life. Does this one has a 4cells?
Just checked FS and BB web pages, both have 6 cells.

dont believe what retailers put.
they are not even closely near what the real life is.
i have the 14.1HP from future shop that was on sale with 12cell
i also havethe 14.1 from best buy...same specs but with 6 cell
6 cell lats around 1h30m with wifi and full brightness
12cell lasts like 3'ish hours.
watching a 2 hour DVD movie which is a typical hollywood movie on full brightness = 6-cell battery died before movie finished
battery life sucks on laptops nowadays.
you need todecrease the brightness to minimum to get something close as to what retailer says.

Actually, I have a Dell Vostro 1500, I get roughly 4.5 hours of battery life at full brightness, wifi, etc. etc. with a 9-cell battery. If I drop brightness down, I go to about 6 hours without changing anything other than brightness.
Edit: This is just basic use. Nothing fancy. I expect my battery life to drop if I do anything that actually require clocks.

i dont think thats the problem, even other brands are claiming low battery life.
like this HP one with only 4 hours on a 12 cell 8800mAh

SOOOO, why the HELL do the new laptops have worse battery life?
Your 4h/"12 cell" (thats a huge battery) has an Nvid graphics set, and a AMD TL, both drain battery power.
The old LG with a 9 cell got 5-8 hours according to the review (linux). Pretty low by todays standards. I can get 10 hours on my Fujitsu with 6 + 4 cells.
Acer uses a 3 cell battery, which is cheap and short lasting, bottom line.

Does battery life drain faster if you have a beefier graphics card?? ie. Geforce 8400. Compare that card to the intel onboard graphics that Dell usually offers. Which would drain the battery more?

Biggest drawback of this laptop imo is the 2GB max memory expandability. Seems low for a memory cap these days.

it is low but that'st he limit for most notebooks except for the ones with santa rosa.
besides since you have 32bit operating system you would cap out at 3gb anyway.

Most notebook only has two slot anyway. 2GB 200PIN module won't be cheap for the next little while.
