Yay!
I have a HSBC Direct account because:
It's more convenient for me (no PCF or CIBC near me, while I do have a HSBC AND BMO branch close by)
Unlimited transactions (verified by my 3-page-long statement this month lol)
HSBC is in many, many, many countries. I can just shove my HSBC card in a machine in HK and just get charged for the conversion.
So, it isn't really as cold as many people make it out to be.

it is quite expensive, my wife just did it once recently, something like 5% of the total plus some service charge from the HK side also, she called the phone banking line and got all the details, you may want to do the same to find out.
Bottomline is unless it is urgent, I personally would not use this service but just send a bankdraft or soemthing...

Lucky I have CIBC / Loblaws (PCF) close by so I am enjoying my 4.25%. Like many other customer, I don't even know when the rate was boosted :cheesygri

Below 50$, there will be no tax receipt and CRA will have no way to know you made this income unless they specifically decide to audit your branch to find out (and CRA usually doesn't spend thousands of dollars to recover income tax on 50$ worth of revenue).
But, by law, you're required to declare it, though.

in response to an earlier post about withdrawing from HSBC ATMs in foreign countries - you still have to pay the $5 ATM fee if you use HSBCs ATMs in foreign countries. It sounds rather stupid but apparently HSBC is not as "global" as many ppl think. So you might as well use PCfinancial given that this would be the only advantage of HSBC (IMO).

I am pretty sure I saw an advertisement for shi - I mean CITIbank that was for 5% savings accounts. Not sure what the fine print said though. On a brighter note, I think that CITIbank DOESN'T charge you for using CITIbank ATMs in foreign countries. So if you had an account here, and wanted to take money out in say, Brazil, you wouldn't be charged an ATM fee. That is good for those of you who travel. If you don't have an account with CITIbank though, don't use their ATM's in foreign countries - you get charged the $5 ATM fee plus an additional $3 (at least in Brazil you do!).

HSBC doesn't pay interest in balances over a certain amount.
PC Financial has no such limit.

You were looking at the US website unfortunately. https://web.da-us.citibank.com/cgi-bin/citifi/scripts/prod_and_service/prod_serv_detail.jsp?BS_Id=CurrentRates&BV_UseBVCookie=yes

From the HSBC website: 3 Interest is only paid on balances up to $1,000,000
If you're worried about interest savings after a million dollars, you should get out more. Even if you do have that much money, splitting your savings is a good idea, because CDIC only covers $100,000 from each FI. The fact of the matter is, HSBC gives more access to your money. With PCF, you can't touch the money for a day. With HSBC, you can use the money for Interac purchases anytime you want.

ICICI - 4.5%
PCFS - 4.1% (interest plus)
Manulife - 4.1%
CTFS- 4% (5.5% first 90 days)
Citizensbank - 3.8%
ING - 3.75%
HSBC - 3.5% (high rate savings)
HSBC - 4.25% (direct savings)

Nov 10th, 2007, 01:41 AM
does that mean HSBC is now better than the PC offer, since there is no minimum balance (PC require 1000 min) and with HSBC, i can pay bill make withdrawals directly from the saving account? with PC i think there are restriction with withdrawals and you need at lease 1 day advance transfer.

...Son of a....
Damnit. I was enjoying 4.25%...it lasted for such a short time...
Now to contemplate whether I should transfer my excess funds back to my HSBC account which is still 4.25% or if I should just leave it in PCF @ 4.10% and enjoy the "convenience" of 1 day transfers...
Bah...I hate the HSBC online layout >:( . I'm gonna have to actually think about this....

So w/ PCF are transactions free? I know HSBC doesn't charge for interac transactions & withdrawals at HSBC, BMO & Exchange network machines. About ATMs world wide, can I even take cash out w/ a PCF bankcard never mind the fee. I know that Interac only works in Canada.

For existing hsbc online customers you can open a direct savings account online instantly. No teller access though, but that's not a problem if you have another account with them.

*Interest rate paid on balances up to $1 million.
PC Financial(and any other banks high interest savings account) doesn't have that limitation.

If you open your account at a pavilion, your account is activated right away and you also get your bank card on the spot.

I heard BoC may be relaxing the interest rates, so that Interest-Plus savings rate might go down further. I just put some of savings into GIC while it's still 4.506% per annum.

You'll get everything in the mail, around the same time that your first deposit cheque will have cleared.

I called PCF about accessing funds worldwide. Essentially the rep told me that it isn't "guaranteed". It "may" work at bank machines that support Interac "plus" ... which I think is the Visa "plus" system.
Instead of relying on that I am planning to simply prepay one of my credit cards (visa) and then access those funds via cash advance if necessary. I have to pay the one time fee and the currency conversion (you'd have to do that with a bank card too) but I will avoid the interest that way.
I also have accounts with Royal and CIBC right now so I could theoretically use those accounts as well ... but I think it is just as easy to use the credit card if not easier ... and probably a better guarantee of success.

All well, I always have my Achieva account at 4.35% to back me up. I've had an account with them for over two years and those guys haven't disappointment once. Their interest rate has been always climbed.... so far.

You are welcome!:cheesygri I am happy to do something for the community, but this time I find a bad news for everybody with HSBC direct saving account. >:(
The reason to lower down the rate is the prime interest rate was lowered down according to the bank message. The 4% rate took effect since Dec. 13.
