1. Budget (price range)
2. Level of interest (casual, amature, etc)
3. Level of competency/willingness to learn
4. What type of photography interests you (nature, macro, sports, family, etc)
5. Features you would like to have (wide angle, external flash, IR, etc)

Remember, the more specific you are, the easier it is to narrow down the choices.

Note: Let me know if you think I need to modify these criterias.

2. Hobbyist, Freelace
3. I work Monday to Friday, so time is limited. I do like taking pictures and read
4. Portrait(indoor/outdoor) and want to try macro
5. 35 to 105mm, studio lighting and light modifier
