I don't see why i wouldnt make an effort to go see this
i missed it last year because I was in Waterloo, definitely want to go this time around

any recommendations on which seminars will be good from people who've gone to this event in the past?

Great deals on new and used equipment!
This should be interesting :)

any coupons to this event instead of paying the full $15? we're RFD afterall

Didn't one just happen in April/May?

We went there, free coupon entry, attended 2 seminars and bought nothing
It really is one BIG sales, and chances to try things

Not so much freebies, but it's fun nonetheless

This is what I got from a seminar + some Energizer bunny & batteries

I'm thinking of attending (pending on my schedule), did they have a large selection of tripods at the show? I'm having a hard time finding a store with all the tripods I'm looking at. Eithe they are OOS, Special Orders or only 1 of the tripod is available.

Yawn...an event monopolized by Henrys. You don't even get great deals...
but the demos and seminars are useful for amateurs

I am an amateur, and I will enjoy attending the seminars.

As for the showcase of products, I miss the 'old' days when we didn't have to hunt things down on the internet....you know actually leaving the house to see things before purchasing them...such a novelty!

I miss the old days when I was able to go to a "Event/Show" and be able to talk to different vendors and compare prices/packages and opinions.
Kinda like the computer show of the 90s....
Here at the show, if you're buying, you can only buy from henrys...since they run the entire floor. That's all im saying.

FYI for those who haven't been, this show happens twice annually. They are essentially the same each time, with differences in new gear/equipment each time. So, if you miss one, don't fret - there's another one in 2008 in April and then October, and so forth.

The FREE seminars they offer aren't spectacular, just the basics that you can pretty much learn on your own through reading online websites or even books. Their aim is to get you to sign up for their paid classes that Henrys offer where they will go into more depth. Paid classes are like $100 and up.

If it's a nice day you'd do better grabbing your camera and driving north a bit to take some nice fall pictures. If the weather's crappy, it's a decent event to wander through - especially if it's free. Thanks for the coupon Klam!

Since this is more of a sale than a show, do they allow you to bring your own memory cards and test cameras on the spot (bringing home the test pix for comparison)? Or perhaps they have equipments to compare printouts (not samples) right there?

Yes, to all of the above.

They check and tag your gear at the door, so bring your camera and go nuts.

They have booth models too. Well, Sigma always does and the odd Sony when they were showcasing their Alpha for the first time.

I've been three of four times but will probably skip it this year.

The Seminars

I have found these less and less informative and more and more sales pitches. The title can be a bit misleading - it may sound "general" but they want to talk about 1 specific way of doing it with 1 specific s/w package which of course they sell and also happen to sell a training dvd or something similar.

The floor shows

Worth every penny. Jean-Francois O'Kane is normally there and his 1 hour session is worth going to. He explains portrait photography using 1 or 2 light set-ups very well and is very entertaining.

I watched more floor shows than seminars in the Spring show. I think I walked out of about 2 seminars when the marketing drowned out any real message.

The deals are largely avoidable. This is Henry's - do a price comparison with photoprice.ca and the markup is astronomical. If you are willing to shop from B&H in the States you'll probably save a bucket load.

I did notice at the May show that they had increased the size of their "official" booth to sell more gear. I bought around $60 worth of picture frames since the price was marginally less then I normally pay. I probably saved about $10, so my gas was covered.

Overall, my advice is - watch the floor shows, avoid the seminars (or just walk out), use the coupon (works a treat) and be an informed shopper when it comes to the "specials" on sale.

On display as in behind glass or on display as in usable? Kinda useless if they're behind glass.

Henry's has a used EF400 f/2.8 (not the DO model) on sale for just under $6K at the show. I'm sure you can talk the price down by a grand or so (since US$ is at par now).

I tried this lens and just couldn't put it down. It's bigger & heavier than my EF300 f/2.8 (weights about twice as much but I'm not 100% sure). But, of course, gets me a lot closer to the subject. Hmmmm..... so tempting. I'm going back again on Sunday to play with it.

Nikon has their monster 600mm f/4 on display and wow! That's all I can say.

If you do sports photography, such as shooting F1 races the 600mm f/4 will be SO sweet.

I have never been to the show (only recently got into amateur DSLR photography), and I am looking to pick up a new lense and maybe a couple of filters... would you guys suggest I check it out? I have tickets already (that came with a purchase). In terms of lenses, I'm not really looking for anything above 500 bucks, just trying to expand my current selection.

I have a 400D with kit lense (18-55), and a 75-300 4-5.6 USM II... if anything, I'm not even sure if I should buy a new lense..

so can anyone give me some direction as to what I should do? haha thanks!

Show's over now.. next one's in February. All I got this time was a new tripod and 10 digits from one of the girls at the booths...

They were sold out of the Tammy 17-50mm F2.8 though!! ARgh!

I got a EF-S 17-85mm IS lense that I'm selling under $500 with a B+W UV Filter worth $60 in the BST forum! :cheesygri Would greatly do a helluva lot better than that 18-55mm.

Has anyone come across a comp ticket for the Ottawa Show Nov 16-18?

I tried just changing Toronto to Ottawa in the comp ticket URL, but that didn't work (it worked last year). This year I just end up with the page with a comp ticket for 2006...

Thanks

It's not until October.

They send it via Email about 4-6 days before the actual dates.
Once I get it, I will post a link to the coupon.

Can be printed as many times as needed.

You can also get on the email list just by signing up for their newsletter.

There are two shows per year in Toronto. The next one is in May:

You know, now that you mentioned it, I was signed up for their newsletter and I have received free tickets from email in the past. I just realised I haven't received anything from them for the past few months.

Meanwhile, Black's spams my inbox at least twice per week, lol.

how many years have they been running this?

maybe they've collected enough data to indicate that there is enough consumer willingness to pay to cover the variable costs of the show. or maybe the indirect costs of giving out free passes is greater than the revenue generated by the additional visitors.

also, prospect theory might be in play, that people already paid for the admission, might as well take the opportunity to buy something from the show at a slightly discounted price.

who knows...but in any case, i still want my free ticket dammit:(

Only bring your camera if you plan to buy a lens. Otherwise it's pretty much like a big henry's store..with very simple workshops setup for people to attend.
Prices aren't any better than normal, but if you go on the first day or so, and you are early, you will find something from Henry's outlet.

Other than that they'll have all the camera bodies, and all the various lenses there for you to try, so even if you dont bring your camera, they might have it there if its relatively recent. Unless you go to a 3rd party manufacturer, in which case they'll have the lenses to use but only one or two of every body from a certain manufacturer to test.
