Something finally beat the record set by Spider-man 3. I knew the game was going to sell a lot, but damn.

I don't know the business term but is it cash that's been converted or just projected sales from units shipped? It's hard to believe Microsoft has already tallied the numbers from sales in less than 24 hours. Doesn't Bestbuy, Futureshop, EBG, et al, work on a consignment?

I'm pretty sure that's shipped to stores. Now let's see how much it's costing them to do the disc replacements. That should lower them down to Spiderman 3 levels
I'm still pissed off they penny pinched the "Collector's Edition" and somehow made it cheaper feeling than the standard one and that's why we have scratched discs.

Super Smash is gonna break the Halo 3 record.

Super Smash is gonna break the Halo 3 record.
Worldwide in terms of overall says, that's a BIG maybe. In the US/Europe, no way. Halo's a system seller, I kind of doubt Smash has that kind of clout.

Keep in mind that $170 million is USA only and doesn't include any other country.
Smash Brother Brawl will outsell Halo in Japan, but not anywhere else.

I think smash will outsell halo globally. Not in NA, but if you include Japan, its highly possible. Smash is a system seller. It was on N64, and NGC.

Very confused here. Not in NA, but globally if you include Japan. Why wouldn't you. Are they on some other globe? Do you remeber the NPD numbers from last month? Do you realise how many people have a modded Wii

I think the point was.
globally Smash will sell more than Halo 3 largely because of Japan, however in North America Halo 3 will sell mroe than Smash.
Personally I don't think it will even be close. Halo 3 will come out the clear winner.

Smash is a system seller, no doubt about that. However, Smash outselling Halo 3 depends mostly on the Wii's performance. GCN and XBX weren't that far apart worldwide, it was about 24 mil to 21 mil in units sold. Lagging behind 100 or 110 million PS2s. Smash was outsold by Halo 2 and around the same as Halo. The three PS2 GTA titles outsold all of them. Pokemon Ruby + Sapphire was top.
This gen it'll be Pokemon Diamond and Pearl as kings for sure. Halo 3 competes with GTA IV and Smash Bros. Brawl depending on how well the Wii sells. If its userbase is high enough, Smash should do very well.
Edit: Those of you saying Halo 3 will be the CLEAR winner really need to start looking at past numbers instead of Microsoft press releases.

I knew about Gamecube's performance (smash that is). Based on previous history with the install base being roughly in the same zone give or take a million or two, and Halo 2's sales, I doubt Smash will be the uber-Halo3 smashing hit Nintendo fans are expecting.
Marketing does wonders for the system. We all have been bombarded by Microsoft the past year over Halo 3's release. I haven't seen anything near that by Nintendo. Sure Nintendo historically starts to market heavily near release but Halo 3's marketing has been over the top even by Microsoft's standards. Marketing budget-wise I don't think it's in the same league.

Keep in mind that Brawl will probably retail for $10 less than Halo 3 regular, and I doubt Nintendo will make a "Legendary" Edition of Brawl. Although including collectible figurines of some of the characters will be pretty cool, especially if they're randomly inserted.

MS has alot of money to spend/waste. Nintendo doesnt. Im pretty sure I saw more X360 ads on TV than Wii ads when the Wii was comming out, lol. MS has great marketing, unlike the 2 japanese companies.

Have you seen Nintendo's valuation and profit forecasts recently? It's insane.
They have more market cap than Sony and #2 in Japan overall next to Toyota.
They have lots of money to burn but choose not to. They should really try a lot harder to market their products along with 3rd parties like Sony and Microsoft do. We already know people will buy their 1st party offerings, the 3rd parties need a boost as well.
If there's one thing Nintendo knows how to do, it's to generate profit.
