View Full Version : Drove away while parking attendant was writing ticket

I was at the Toronto International Airport picking up my father. There were no spots open for pickup, so instead of waiting for a spot to open up, I put my hazards on, popped my trunk, and got out of the car. The parking attendant instructed me to move my car as I was partially blocking traffic. I ignored his instructions and proceeded to load my car with my Dad's one suit case which took no more than 30 seconds. He said he was writing me a ticket while I was loading the car and I saw him take out a pen and write down something, presumably my license plate number. I drove off before he had time to finish writing the ticket.
Any ideas on what the law is regarding this?

They have to issue you the ticket for it to be a real ticket. I have waited for them to write me the ticket and get out and then I drove away giving them the finger.
Nothing they can do!

lol not true. If the cop wants to get you then I would expect a ticket in your mail. Plus I believe that was a cop, not a parking attendent. Never seen a parking attendant at the airport pickup areas.
I also believe this is fare evasion, that would be a more expensive charge.
Ignoring the cop will just piss him off more. Next time say sorry and say you are going away.

Traffic Enforcement if I recall is the GTAA. They can issue tickets, just that they're not real cops.

Did a similar thing ... some guy was giving me a ticket in a parking lot in front of Baskin Robbins (I parked in front for no more than 45 seconds to pick up a cake) and once I got out of the store he was just finishing writing the ticket. What really p**** me off was that there was 2 cop cars in the same plaza, and this young security guard had to be the one giving me the ticket. The guy (a teenage security guard) was being a punk@ss, and when he handed me the ticket I ripped it up and threw it at his face (at this point - as pathetic as it sounds - I was getting ready for a fistfight...over a $20 ticket lol true rfd style i guess  ), but the guy ran back to his car and called "re-inforcements". I went inside my car and drove away, at which point I saw another 2 security cars coming into the plaza. Couple weeks later I got a reminder in my mail to pay the ticket, and I obeyed.

This guy was definitely NOT a cop. Have you had direct experience with this sort of thing (i.e., receiving a ticket in the mail)? How do you know that it is not true?
I did some searching around and if our laws are similar to the UK (which I believe they are) then the ticket must be served or I must have did something to prevent the traffic attendant from writing the ticket (e.g., grab his pen)...

That sucks :( I guess the difference with you was that he handed you the ticket. I wasn't given anything.
A similar incident happend to me before. I was parked where I shouldn't have and a cop was in her patrol car directly behind me. She was writing something, i thought that it was a parking ticket. I didn't pay any attention and just got in my car and left. Nothing happend.

HAHAHA LMAO. Technically with city tickets they have to put it on your car for it to be legal. So if he was writing a city ticket and didn't put it on your car then you won't have to pay it (but you might have to go to court to prove it, if you get a notice). But if it was some private-type ticket, I'm not sure...

They have to put the ticket on your car for it to be valid.

The old style paper tickets had to be put on your car or handed to you in order to be valid.
The new tickets that are entered electronically no longer need that. As long as they enter your plates and the car description that's all they need. You'll get your ticket in the mail even if you didn't actually get it on the spot.
