hey,
my laptop died due to hard drive failure and repairing it will likely cost a few hundred dollars, so i am deciding to get a new macbook instead. can someone tell me when would be the best time to make such a purchase as i know that the free nano promotion expired. i don't really care about the specs that much but i am really hoping to get a deal so i can convince myself that the money is well spent. would really appreciate it if any of you guys could help me out.
thanks very much

from macrumors... the new macbook is starting at its "midlife" state... so if u want one, and not get "ripped off" from the specs... now is time time
if u are getting it any later (oct - november) u can probably get the new os with it (leopard, instead of tiger)
if u are getting past jan/feb, conference is gonna start, so no point of getting until summer

The best time is probably when the new macbooks get released and the old ones are getting cleared out, however, for things like the mac book pro, there are pretty huge changes so I think, imo, it's worth the new price.

plus, if you get it now and you're a student, the free iPod offer should also apply.

Apple always releases new stuff after their summer promotions, probably going to be a macbook upgrade this time (been a while since a major one).

A new OS is coming out in a couple of weeks...

thanks for the advice!!
I don't know how long I can wait... and whether I should wait at all since I don't think I will be getting the new OS anyway (when do they start clearing out the old stock?). If I buy a refurbished macbook now, would I still be able to use the 10% off educational discount?

Educational discount doesn't apply to the refurbished store. I would definitely wait until clearance if you missed the nano promotion.

If you must buy now, buy refurburbished. Since there might be a refresh of the MacBook within a few months, you'll have a like-new computer with a full warranty that cost you hundreds less. That's easier to take than a new computer with a full warranty that cost you the same as one released shortly after, but faster/with better features/more RAM/bigger hard drive, or whatever changes are coming.
But don't worry. If you wait for the new version, something newer will be released the month after, and the month after that.
And then...
