View Full Version : Toronto RFD Photographers Club

I know that there are many budding photographers in this forum and I thought it would be a great idea if they were to unite under a club of sorts so they can learn from each other, share info and plan photography trips.
I would love to be part of such a club, but I won't be able to organize it. Therefore, I thought I post this and see if there is more interest and perhaps we could get the ball rolling with fall upon us!
One of our first projects could be "Fall in Toronto".
Let me know what do you think?

I think that is a great idea. I am always on Fredmiranda but a lot of times it has tons of photographers in different countries. Would be nice to localize it to the RFD areas. There are a few photography clubs in the GTA but none closer to me.

Great to hear that.
For starters we can create a list of those interested.
Everyone interested in this club feel free to take initiative and come up with ideas and suggestions in this thread.

make a public poll and then we can see whos interested.
Then set up some days to go on "photo trips" or whatever.

while you're at it, go vote in favor of a photo forum in the comments/questions forum! That would be a great venue to organize things like this.

We also need a photography subforum. Where can we talk photography really? Computers? Ot? If the parents can have a forum, we photogs should be able to get one too :)

Yeah, apparently it's hard to get a photography subforum on RFD.. until then, we can use the discussion board on Flickr, I think everyone can start topics =)

Thanks VorteC for taking the initiative. I'm also glad to see a lot of enthusiasm for a photography club/group of RFD members.
I think a club such as this will really help us learn from each other, share info and have fun taking photos. Also, as a group we have better chances of taking photos where otherwise it might be a little difficult and also there is safety in numbers, so we can be adventurous.
I should also add that anyone can join as long as they like taking photographs...
... so, what should be the next step?

Talking about classy real models, not those damn fake import models with fake everything and stuff hanging out that deviates from the focus, which is your face!

Actually, there are some nice spots in Toronto to shoot fall colors. The park at Leslie and Eglinton is usually full of serious photographers during fall.
Shooting fall colors against a city scape is always more contrasting and romantic.

Ummm it really depends. They have a really good article which explains what you can manage with on a budget. I'm using a 580 + 430 + 420 which gives decent light. I find that a lot better esp when you are doing outdoor jobs. No need for outlets or chords. You can go for the Vivitar 285HV x 2 and fire it using non-pocketwizard triggers. I think you can get away with spending probably $350 or so. Not bad considering you will typically pay $1/watt when you buy real strobes.

There is a Caribbean fair on Dundas square this Wednesday from 8am - 8pm. i will be going there around 5 or 6. if anyone of you can make it there let me know. http://www.caribbeanweek.ca/calendar-of-events.asp
We can also setup a trip to photograph the lantern festival.
A trip to one of the parks in Toronto for photographing the fall colors.
Btw, I have a Nikon D40 and my beloved F80 film camera. I have the 18-55 kit lens for D40, 55-200 VR, 50mm 1.8D and 28-85mm F80 kit lens.

I have a d50, sigma 10-20 4.0, nikon 50 1.8, nikon 70-200 2.8
The university should have some equipment that I can use. Hopefully they will have a x2.0, because i doubt they will have anything in the 400mm range.
^^ I think I will use two bodies, makes sense, and definitely save me time

Coming from the 1D that shoots at 8FPS, the 40D shutter sound is less than impressive...

lol +1
The other gripe I have is the single LCD screen for preview and camera settings. Why do people like that?
The day I give up my 350D body for a new one will be one where I miss the separate LCD display.

Went to Lantern festival last weekend, nothing really impressive to shoot at. The lanterns gets mundane and dull afterawhile. Shot it with my 17-85mm, haven't worked on them yet though...
I'm up for Fall colors if there is an outing for that.

forget about the sigma, its slow and cheap glass.
18-200vr is great but it costs a lot.
you can buy the 55-200vr (make sure you get the vr version because there is a regular version as well) for $300 and imo its the best value for performance lens for nikon bodies.

Nice forum. I'm new to photography and I have no clue what to do. I don't have a digital camera..just my 35 mm camera..I've taken some pictures and I'll post it in the photo gallery. For some reason, I like film better than digital. I used to have a digital camera but it was so crappy and it broke. I'll just do it the old fashion way and when I get better, I'll invest in a digital SLR camera. I'm the type who enjoys observing my surroundings and I am currently studying graphic design. I'm sure photography and graphic design work well together so it's best if I start taking pictures now.
