View Full Version : Is it legal setting up a woodshop in a residential neighbor?

Recently a group of people moved into a nearby house and they have set up a woodshop in their garage. They put up signs in front of the house advertising their business and they're making a hell lot of noise every day (even on weekends). Is it legal to set up something like this (a business) in a residential house? Is there anything I can do other than complain to these guys?

No, it is not legal to operate a business such as this from a residence.
Report it to the City. From their website, Compliance & Licensing Enforcement number is 905-896-5655.

Alright, thank you for the tip. I cannot stand the loudness these guys are putting out. They work, they cut, and they tuned up the music so loud (from their vehicles parking in the driveway) as if they're the only existing beings within 10 square miles.

This is the reason why I would hate to live in a sissy neighborhood full of whiners
Dude, they sell earplugs at Canadian Tire..... get them and leave people alone. What you do when traffic streams inside your house? Or when it thunders?

oh please. why don't you move next to a construction yard. i'm sure your wife would be thrilled at that. you'd save a bundle too, in true rfd fashion.
and besides from the obvious noise complaints. there also is a huge fire hazard there with all the sawdust.

He was saying get earplugs to stop the noise, when he was talking about the thunder he said what do you do to limit the noise, the POINT is that you cant stop thunder, but you can stop someone from making alot of noise, and since this is illegal, it is not out of his control

How do you get that from his post? I get "Dude, they sell earplugs at Canadian Tire..... " "get them and leave people alone"
If some one is running an illegal business that causes alot of noise, complaining to the city is the way to go.

I'm with the OP on this one. If it was a party, or a guy doing a deck in the back yard, I'd say shut up and let him finish the job. But these people are running a business out of their garage, and this isn't small time contracting on the side from the sounds of it either. On top of that, they're cranking the tunes in their car in the driveway while they're in the garage to listen to! Thats a bit much, especially if it's all day every day. Your only saving grace might be winter-come, when it's too cold to work with the door open. But if you're in Toronto, that might not be till January-Feb!

Airborne sawdust is not a fire hazard.

Agreed, it that person wants to do wood working as a hobby, set up a small shop in the basement so that the neighbourhood doesn't have to listen to the noise, or see the materials stored and signage advertising the business on the front lawn.
If he want to do it as a small business, find a proper location in an industrial unit.
I have a neighbour that is continually working on his cars, compressor running, impact wrench pounding, etc. This starts in the spring, and goes until October, day after day, working on one car or another for no apparent reason other than something to do. One day he has the seats ALL removed from his car, the next day he has the bumpers removed.
As he works at Ford assembly plant in Oakville, he can't seem to leave his work at work, and have a real life at home with his family.
He really needs to get a computer and spend some time on RFD to keep him away from the cars when he is not working.

I have no issue with a hobbyist who occasionally works in his garage during reasonable times of day. But I would prob agree with the OP, if it is frequent, without regard for the rest of the neighborhood both in terms of noise and appearance (business signage in a residential area- unless its out in the country somewhere). So I'd report the guy...he prob has too much invested in his setup to take a friendly request from a neighbor. Only the po-po or city will get his attention.

There are also zoning laws to consider. If this is zoned residential I doubt he has a permit unless he was able to get a non-conforming use change, in which case the neighbors would have been notifed and given a chance to voice their opinions.

yeah... thats what i meant. i posted that @ like 4am when i was all bleh.
In my neighbourhood i do notice some very residential looking houses being used for commercial reasons.
I seen a air brush studio on the first floor of a house, and same with a few dentist offices.

odds are the noise is nothing illegal and if its during the daylight hours he's free to make as much noise as he wants.
now if the business is illegal a complaint will have the guy fined (maybe) and told to stop running a business, which would equate to him taking down the sign and continue doing the work as a hobby
Noise bylaws are pretty lax during the day, it maybe annoying but such is life in suburbia hell.

no the noise is illegal, in toronto you're not allowed to make excessive noise at anytime

definate fire hazard - take this from someone who has worked in claims for insurers - unless they have specific dust collection systems - the sawdust is also a potential explosive matter I believe (been a few years since I was in insurance)
Report to local municipality

Bylaw.. zoned residential.. you don't do **** like this.. call the city immediately, and many times per week until something is done about it. Also get the other neighbours around to call as well.

Actually Urban, you may not have been as bleh as you think...lol, you're right on both counts. To operate a business you do need a business permit, the zoning issue is a separate additional issue if your business is located in a location not zoned commercial or industrial or whatever category his business falls into. That's when he'd have to get a non-conforming use in addition to the business permit.

Alright, take a bunch of sawdust and throw it in the air. Then light a match.
Once you've recovered from your 3rd degree burns and able to type again, let us know if you think it was funny:lol:
My old high school's workshop was closed down because it didn't have a proper ventilation system going. Sawdust is an extreme fire hazard. Pretty much anything which is very fine and thrown in the air can combust / explode when lit, even chalk dust. Chemistry 101.

Yeah, it can be. Dust and vapour are more volatile than solids/liquids. The guys have no right to be running a business in a residential neighbourhood like that. Blaring their music is just a bonus showing what nimrods they are.
