Stay with Rogers or Go with Bell for internet?

Hi,

I'm gonna be moving soon and will be getting Bell ExpressVu installed when I move. This means that I won't be really be needing Rogers TV anymore. So if I were to keep Rogers Internet, I'd prolly have to pay the $10+ extra per month. I really don't have a problem paying this fee, however I can probably order Sympatico and get everything bundled (landline, satellite, dsl). That said, is Rogers internet better than sympatico? Right now, I enjoy pretty good speeds (I don't mind em at least), I get 600K downloads, BT works wonderfully. If I switch to Sympatico, will I expect the same kinda speeds, same uptime?

Also, I remember finding a site before where I could put in my postal code or address, and it'd find the nearest Bell CO (central office). Does anyone know what site this is? I forgot, and can't seem to get any results in Google.

Sympatico will be good if you are closer to the CO.

Only way to find out is when u call Bell ask the CSR how far you are from the CO and if u r closer then u r good to go. If you do a lot of downloading and u r far, then it would suck, but if you just do normal browsng email, songs/pictures downloading then just go with bell and put everything on 1 bill.

If I were you I'd negotiate with Rogers to do all your services with them... just tell them you're going to cancel and they'll connect you with retentions and you can get a discount on your cable bill.

you seem to be getting VERY good BT d/l speeds with Rogers which seems rare so I wouldn't switch if I were you.

ALL of this was on a 1 YEAR commitment as well.

If I kept negotiating I probably could have gotten them to go lower on the home phone ($19.95/mo. I'm guessing)

The best Bell could offer me for the same deal was $139/mo. before taxes.

Only way to find out is when u call Bell ask the CSR how far you are from the CO and if u r closer then u r good to go.

just a word of advice, call up teksavvy and ask for an estimate of how fast your internet will go. Bell CSRs are now outsourced and don't know what they're talking about usually (based on personal experience). Just wanted to add that~

Download speeds with sympatico are slightly slower than rogers. You wont get the max 7mbps with sympatico...max is around 6.1meg. However, with sympatico you can get a better pricing by speaking to the cancellation department (you should be a customer for at least 5 months before calling in). Depending on which rep you speak to, you might get them to lower the price to as low as $24.95.

Express Vu is way better than Rogers Digital Cable, the only draw back is the dish only supports two televisions. You have to buy extra equipment for more TVs

Bell telephone is better than Rogers VoIP service. Voice quality is the same, but I just prefer Bell. How to argue with a company that has been doing it for over 100 years.

The GSM network is the only cell phone network. Best choice of phones and flexibility.

Rogers Internet. The best part of Rogers internet, you get the speeds advertised. If you are getting 7 Meg Service and 800k upload, that is what you get. ADSL is cheaper, but you will NEVER get the advertised speed.

That being said. Here is what I would do

Express Vu
Bell Phone Service
Rogers Cellular
Teksavvy ADSL

Spread it out, give everyone a little piece of the action. Teksavvy will probably not be as fast as Rogers Internet, but it will be quick enough and there are no caps, unlike Rogers and Sympatico.

Get basic Express Vu and basic phone service. Then get VoIP for all your outbound calls. But keep the Bell line for incoming and reliability. Especially if you need 911 service.

If you are close to the CO(still, as previous poster said, best to check with Teksavvy techs first, www.teksavvy.com), then sign with teksavvy, you would be paying less(~$31 with taxes) and you get great customer service, they also have a designated forum at dslreports.com too.

If you stick with Rogers at your new location, I wouldn't count on bittorrent working as well as it has for you. I think there's some some location specific factor to who they throttle.

With Sympatico I can download continuously from Rapidshare/Megadownload if I disconnect/reconnect the internet. With Rogers, your IP address is always the same and you'll have to wait 2 hours between downloads.

My preference is for the free Rapidshare access rather than paying for it.

Yep, that has been my experience. YEAR AFTER YEAR this has happened, and this year i was just sick of it. I spent 20mins on the phone with them trying to settle this year, and in the end just told them to forget it and cancel my service, and even after 20mins on the phone with them, they asked me why i wanted to cancel. Hello? Are you ********? What have we just spent the last 20mins doing?

I still have a home phoneline with them, and i'm contemplating on canceling that as well. I just need to find an easy alternative way to fax if i do (there's online faxing, but that's much too bothersome atm... at least compared to hitting speed dial on the fax machine, and feeding the paper through it).

If you do heavy download, neither Bell nor Rogers is a good choice since they have caps. Go with Techsavvy in this case. If you just download mp3, pics and check email, either one suits you fine. But again you don't need high speed to do this. It just not neccssory.
So ya Techsavvy is a good choice dollar wise too.

You can get around this by using a free proxy server.
