What would be the advantage of running Vista Ultimate 64 bit versus the 32 bit on a Core2Duo?

You can use more than 3gig of memory. Possibly better virus protection. Until actual 64bit software comes out that you want to use, that's all I know about. Otherwise stick with the 32bit for now it has much better driver support.
I have 64bit Vista that I want to use for Photoshop and video editing with my 4Gigs of memory, but after I installed it a had enough driver issues that I had to go back to 32bit XP. nVidia 7900GT driver problems were a major show stopper. Also, it seems like even the manual ways around installing unsigned drivers in 64bit Vista don't work anymore. It was impossible for me to install unsigned drivers even when selecting to allow it during bootup and using all the command line changes.

aside from driver issues, is the performance of the 64-bit better than 32-bit in the windows environment?

Until Microsoft gets more serious with this and more people are using it you're going to find application and driver support rather lacking. Check and see if there are any beta 64 bit drivers if no production versions are available.

For the most part as long as your computer is recent you should be alright with 64bit. Check your drivers and if they all are available in 64bit then go with that. 64 bit makes more sense for the future. So you wont need to reinstall vista if you decide you want to have more than 3gb or so of ram.
I have never had a driver or performance problem with vista 64bit compared to 32bit.

I've been using x64 Vista for about a month now. Reason was simple, I wanted to use 4 GB RAM and this was the only way.
So far, I find it just as stable as Vista x32 ... drivers seem to be all there, but I'm running a high end machine with recent components.
It may be all in my head, but I find that things are a just a bit 'snappier' in x64 Vista.
All the games I've tried (all have been released within the past 2 years) are running flawlessly.

My experience is exactly what xwar said.
(Cept Vista doesn't work with my 2003 domain too much, i'm not pleased with it..)

Must be a configuration issue, works fine for me except the glitches with the administration pack.
