I'm having an extremely wild day today. Earlier this morning, I was declined a position for a job that I wanted really badly. I left the house for school at around 9:00 AM and I got an e-mail back from another company that wants me. However, I'm getting paid about 30% less and it's not really the kind of job that I really want to do. I guess I was afraid that I wouldn't have a part-time job this year and therefore I hastily accept it.
I just got home now and I got an e-mail back from a third company that I went to interview for and they said they want to hire me. This is for an administrative position that would give me some good work experience which is more or less similar to the first job in which I was declined a position. Now the problem is that I have already accepted the position at this less than ideal location. The problem is that I can't have two jobs as I'm still in school trying to finish off my last year of university. I will have until tomorow afternoon to respond to this other company and I'm really not sure what to do. I know that it's extremely rude and unacceptable to change my mind after I have accepted the position and filled out the paper work, but this is like a good once in a life time opportunity. If I take this other job then I am going to get some real relevant work experience. What should I do guys?

Just be honest. Accept the position you want form the third company, and simply call the 2nd company back, and say to them that you were offered a better position with a higher wage, and that you have decided that it would be in your bests interests, career wise, to take that one instead. Simple.

as long as you haven't signed any sort of contract with the 2nd company, just take the 3rd job (if you get it) and tell the 2nd one that you've found another place to work.

And act quickly.
Obviously you've already made your decision. As soon as you have secured your offer letter from company 3, call company 2 to let them know.
If they closed their hiring round based on your acceptance, it's a massive pain to repost.
Plus it's just good karma.
That is if you really have made your decision...it sounds like you really did want compant 1. Have you really done all you can yo follow-up? If you need specific skills, can you get them?

I suppose I'll personally go and talk to her tomorrow in person and explain the difficult position that I'm in. Honestly, I didn't really want to work for company two, but my thinking 10 hours ago was it's probably better to accept an offer than to have no work at all. At the time I also thought that the money wasn't too bad although I did thought I was worth more than that.
I really really wanted to work for company one. There is no doubt about it. I'm just a little worried about what the lady will say to me tomorrow as I reverse my decision. I can't imagine that I would ever end up in a situation like this. At the same time, I feel like I should just be a responsible individual and just stick with my original decision. Man, I'm not going to sleep well tonight.

The offer from the third company is still there. They sent me an e-mail to me about 10 hours ago; at around the same time that I accepted the offer from company two. Seriously, this is the time in which I wished that I had a data account so that I would have push e-mail.
I'm probably going to have to reply by tomorrow morning or they may end up giving the job to somebody else. No contract was signed with company two, but it was just some company paperwork that I filled out.

Take the job of the company that you want to work for. If no papers have already been signed.
Look out for your best interests. It is a business afterall. Do you think companies think about your best interests when they're laying off people?
Good Luck

It's not rude at all. All you have right now with Company #1 is a verbal agreement, which is nothing. Call them and tell them you've been offered a better position and changed your mind. If they're smart, they'll offer you the position you originally applied for, and if they don't you can tell them goodbye. It's win-win. Make sure Company #2 is completely serious and a done deal first if you can though, you don't want to be left without a job at all.

The answer is pretty obvious.......keep the current crappy job you accepted and tomorrow say NO to the good "once-in-a-lifetime" job opportunity. I mean, you don't want to hurt anyones feelings, right?

At the end of the day, you have to feel comfortable where you're at.
It's akward and probably doesn't look the best, but you could work for 1 week or 3 months but if you're not comfortable and want to leave (or in this case, another job comes up) guess what? Go for it.
I know it doesn't seem that way, but the rest of the world does it too.
Go for it.

Business is business. Someone offers you a better opportunity, take it. It's not as if you own company #2 anything. Be honest though; the person who made you an offer deserves an honest explanation, and she will certainly sympathize with you and agree with your position.
Just remember: if you work in a big company, you're only a number. (My gf used to tell me that, and I never believed her until I got laid off after 11 years; this was 10 years ago.)

I get a kick out of all the people saying 'as long as you haven't signed a contract'.
Unless your playing professional sports, a job contract obligates the company to give you a certain salary and benefits, no what you owe the company. Never in a job contract will you see, 'if you quit, you owe us X amount of dollars' (unless they paid for relocation). Plus you haven't even started work, so the company has put minimal money into you.
Your situation is not uncommon, and you don't need to go tell them personally. Just call them up and be honest and Najibs said. This is your life we're talking about, don't make yourself suffer through a job you don't want.

do whatever is in YOUR best interest.
As long as you havent signed a contract to start working yet...
I had to do this once. It was extremely awkward, but in the end they really cant stop you.

I swear I already heard this story. Didn't someone post something like this just a while ago?

No need to feel bad about it, just get in touch with the second company and tell them that you've got a better job so you won't be able to take this job anymore. It happens all the time and employer won't mind it since it all happened same day. They can just contact their second best candidate for the job and they don't lose anything.
Congratulations for getting the job! :)

Okay guys, here's an update on the situation. I went to company three today to clarify things with them and at the end I was hired by them like what the e-mail said. Afterwards, I went back to company two and I apologized to my boss for the inconvenience that I have caused. She was really understanding and very nice about it. We both wished each other luck for the future and that was it. It wasn't as bad as I thought as it would be and she understood the notion that I had to look after my interest.
I'm having a really good day right now. I finally get to do something that I want to do and best of all, I'm getting paid pretty well to do it too ;).
Thanks for the help guys!
