They're very similar, but the C220 is newer - the C310 is no longer being sold by Mio.

Maps in the C220 are newer, but Mio is distributing it in Canada without the detailed USA maps.
The C310 has both Canada and USA detailed maps, but they're badly outdated and there's no legal way to update them (I said *legal*...)

Information and options for hacking and adding optional software are more advanced for the C310, but making progress for the C220 as well.

C310 has some more buttons on the side that were dropped on the C220 - but they're really only useful for some add-on software.

I would recommend either unit, except for the maps issue. Mio is really screwing up badly there.

Does anyone know if I need to unlock the US version of the C220 in order to install Canadian maps ? I've located the 110MB version of Canada.fbl and am wondering what's the complete idiot's guide to get it working with an US C220

Thanks

The U.S. C220 doesn't have a license to add the Canadian maps. As far as I am aware, Mio offers no legal way to do it.

The previous-generation C310 had a firmware license key (in ROM) that treated U.S. and Canadian maps exactly the same, so U.S. units sold without the Canadian maps could add them without problems if you could find them somewhere. I don't know if the firmware license key of the U.S. C220 will allow Canadian maps to be added - I suspect not. You might be able to find out more from other C220 users on the Mio forum at GPSPassion.com (no discussion of illegal copying of unlicensed maps allowed there either, so phrase your questions appropriately).

The answer was - locate "modified" miomap.exe file and transfer it using Transfer_Mio_C250.exe

All good now, amazing unit, well worth US$ 170

Got a C220 from the Black Friday deal at CC ($99).

Works great, now with Canadian maps.
