I'm a little disappointed as I thought it was going to be hard drive based, not flash.

With the larger capacities and lower price, the iPod "Classic" looks better to me.

They're releasing 8 gig Cowon D2s right now... with 16 GB on the way. Touch screen capabilities with SD slot for expansion. That's a really high premium to pay for the Apple look in a touch screen MP3 player.

The Touch is.....risky, but we'll see what the market does. It's much larger then one would usually carry around, it's creeping into the PDA/PMP zone, and crippled at what those are aimed for. However, feature-wise, it sports quite a package. It's true its much thinner then PMP/PDAs however...

The nano is a winner though, no doubt about it.

That's the thing, for the same price(though half the size), one could get an iPhone. Another point out there is that many people nowadays already have a MP3 player(usually an iPod), and filling the market with more and more MP3 players is a move to be considered. Will consumers splurge(ones who own 1-2nd gen iPods) to get a new one(in less then a few years of ownership?)? It looks like it could happen, which will be very interesting to see.

My marketing class had a small introduction on Sony vs Toshiba on the disk format yesterday and he mentioned the Sony MP3/Apple iPod relationship as well, and with the new announcement, it's going to be one interesting class :)

This is what, the first gen of iPod Touch... from my experience with ipods, if memory serves me correctly, there always seems to be something wrong with the first gen ipods (first gen mini's, first gen nanos, etc). i want a 16gb touch. plenty of room for movies and what not.

16 GB Touch is too small for putting a lot of music and videos on it. I would think minimum would be 30 GB. If you calculated the cost per GB, the 16 GB at US$399 is way too expensive compared to the 160 GB of the Classic iPod at US$349.

Sure the iPodtouch is nice, but I will wait until they increase the memory size before I buy it. And Apple will do it during the next upgrade. They always improve or adjust the iPods every 6 months or a year.

LOL I don't think I've ever heard of the 5th gen iPod referred to as that before  ;)

Anyway, if the iPod Touch follows the route of the iPhone, there will probably be a drop in price. At least I hope because I can't justify 8GB for $329 as it surely would not be my primary portable music player. I can't go from my 30gb 5th gen iPod to 8 or 16 GB. I think it would be a really neat and fun thing to have as an "extra" I guess.

I guess the "NEAT! FUN! WOW!" factor aside for the iPod Touch, it would make more sense to just get the iPod Classic, personally. Because I am already out of space on the 30gb and I would LOVE for 80gb or even 160gb in space.

Well, the iPhone got the drop in price because of the release of the Touch. I don't see the Touch's price dropping anytime soon. Especially since, when at that price point, the 8GB version is only $110 more than the 8GB Nano. If anything, it'll get a bump in size several months from now but that's about it.

This iPod Touch looks amazing, I would love to trade in my Ipod 30GB and upgrade to a iPod Touch, obviously i'll pay for a trade =P

If I didn't have an ipod, I'd buy one. 16 gigs is enough. My music takes up 20 gigs, but it's not like I couldn't get by without "The Year of the Cat" and stuff like that. 10 gigs for music is fine, and that leaves enough room for 10 movies.

Yes, this is what happened. Appl is not known to drop prices a couple of months after its release. Look at all its previous hot items, they usually drop prices when new products are released or add new features and keep the same price point.

If they kept the iphone at $599, the ipod touch will eat into the iphone sales....$300 more from the ipod touch 8gb just for the phone feature? It makes sense to drop the price so that the ipod doesn't hurt the iphone sales and they want to grap a big chunk of the mobile device market share....without a price drop, everyone will pick up the ipod touch instead of the iphone.

Apple patented the multitouch, so you definitely won't get the same user interface...they can produce a regular one with just a regular touch screen like what is on a gps system, but can't use the same multi touch feature...

whats the multi touch feature?

Here is a demo with the iphone:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/features.html?feature=touch

Basic touch screen can only respond to single finger touches, on the iphone, if you flick your finger, it will scroll smoothly, regular touch screen doesn't know if it's a flick or a regular touch. multi touch can also respond to multiple finger gestures, like pinching the screen, or moving two fingers apart (these are used on the iphone to resize windows/pictures).

Yeah, you've seen it before, that's the iPod touch. But take a closer look at the upper-right corner of the display. See that little icon? Right, Bluetooth, as in the not announced Bluetooth radio in Apple's new iPod touch. Is this just a snafu from Apple's arts-and-charts team or something more say, AVRCP and stereo A2DP related? At this point, Apple's not saying and we don't know. But you'd better hurry up and click that Read link because that Apple-harvested picture won't be around for much longer.

It would make sense as the achitecture is very similar to the iPhone.

at first I was rather "meh" about the ipod touch and the classics were more appealing, I like the coverflow, the cost of the 80gb, the more I look at the ipod touch, the more I'm sort of starting to like it, I really don't like the size though, I wish they would have used a HDD instead. idk, I wouldn't be getting the 160gb classic because it is thicker then the 80gb, so it is really at a minimum a 50 dollar different. Also the nano is nice because of the thiness, looking at it from the front you'd think it was real thick, but from the side shots it is really very thin. Kind of sucks that the discontinued the orange shuffle, that was my favorite colour choice, I bought one for taking to the the driving range, I just clip it to my collar.

I think I'll be perfectly fine with my $69 20 gb Creative Zen...

I don't really see the advantage to apple products, and I've never wished that I could watch movies on a two inch screen... It would be interesting to see how many people buy ipods because they're ipods, or because they are seriously interested in all the features blah blah blah

I constantly have this debate with my sister-in-law, since I know for a fact the only reason she bought an Ipod was for a status symbol, because I pointed out a half dozen other players with similar plus more features, and significantly lower price, and she had no reason for preferring an Ipod besides the fact that they "look cool" and "everyone has them"

I understand that they're are quite good quality and stand behind there products, but I can't see why people would pay over $600 for an mp3 player...My friend in college got a 2nd gen 20 or 40 gig and spent over $700 on it (warranty, access., etc)

the main reason I got an iPod was because of iTunes; I had a Zen Extra 30 gb before and although the player was alrite (great sound quality), managing my collection was horrific on that thing, the software was bad, didn't recognize foreign languages in the library management program (even though the player does). Drag and drop sucks hard when you're trying to manage more than a few gigs of music and trying to make playlists.

I have both a Video and Nano. I prefer to use the Video. My Nano doesn't fit all my music (I have about 20GB worth inr 200CDs ripped).

I prefer to use the video on shuffle mode. This is better than picking and choosing albums because often, the shuffle picks a song I forgot about and I'm glad to hear again
