So I paid for an hour of parking and parked all day. Should have read the instructions. I got a ticket from Impark in Vancouver on my truck.
But here's where it gets weird.
Since January, I've been living at my cousin's house. She's in Hong Kong for 1 year. The house is in her maternal grandmother's name, who doesn't have the same last name as me. I don't have anything in my name there, it's all in her name, and she pays the bills online, I give the rent cheques to her Grandma.
I've never had any mail delivered there, everything goes to my parents since they live close by and I'm too lazy to change everything when I know I'll have to change it again. I don't even know the address. I know the street and when I tell people where it is I just give the intersection and tell them that it's the spooky house beside the school.
Yet somehow, after I didn't pay the parking ticket, Impark sends me a letter at that address! How on earth could they know I'm there when I don't even know where I live? The only thing that I could think of is that they saw the truck in the driveway. That's the only thing that connects me to that house. They must have people that drive around and punch in licence plate numbers or something.
Pretty impressive.
Anyone know how they do this?
Yes, I'll pay the ticket. It was my mistake.

well... that is their trade!
I dont imagine $1-$3/hr parking makes that much money. So im sure they'd put in effort to chase down ppl to make a point.
dont run away from the parking man

How do you know they sent the letter to where you live if you don't even know where you live?
There are a lot of questions in this thread.

Your cousin's is not really in HK. That is what they told her to say. She works for Impark.
Another case closed.

It was in the mailbox attached to the house. I know where that is.

I dont understand how Impark can run your information like that before. Isn't there some kind of privacy act that prevents companies from being able to look up your information from your license plate? I dont know how it works in Vancouver but in Toronto you dont have to pay any parking tickets not issued by the city so if its not official yellow you dont have to pay it, then again morally and probably to avoid a lot of trouble you should still probably pay it. um..

I don't know, but my license and insurance addresses are my parents. So if they would have looked up that info from my license plate, the letter would have gone to my parents. That's where my renewal letters have gone this year.

I don't know how they would have gotten my parent's phone number, cause I don't think they keep that on license or insurance records. If they did, they would have just told me, not given me their address. I go by my parents 2-3 times a week.

Yeah that's what I hear. Impark can look up information in ICBC's database, I think it might be printed in the legal mumbo jumbo when you go and park. I also believe they pay ICBC a fee for every person they look up. But they do allow info to be released to certain companies.

Why phone when they have an address on my insurance? Why not just send the letter to address that my insurance and my drivers license have?

Well they do whatever they feel like doing. They don't really have a set policy on what they do in these cases.
In your case it could be they just felt like phoning!

I just doubt that my parents would give out an address that they probably didn't even know to someone over the phone. I don't even think that ICBC would have their phone number under my license plate.

That is true, but anyway even if they called, your parents are under no obligation to give out any information.

Ask impark how they tracked you down. They told me the route they took to get my info.
