View Full Version : New forum MUCH slower for anyone else?
Bazooka Joe
Aug 31st, 2007, 12:32 PM
I like the new look of the stuff at the top, but it's really slowed down the forum a ton. I can't even scroll on the page without lag. Also some 600 items are loaded when coming on the forums and before every post, which slows it down a lot too.
Is this normal and acting the same for everyone else? I don't think it's my connection, other pages load the same...

Running fine for me, Very fast actually.

Give it a few hours... the server is trying to catch up to all the new requests for images and new code that's in the header. Once it's been loaded everything should be fine. For the most part it's the images server that's slowing stuff down currently.

I'm shocked there was no announcement etc. The last time - which is a few months ago - there was that thread that had tease pictures of the new look.

same here, every page load with 300-600 items. I hope that will improve when things are settled. Even scrolling up/down the page is jerky. Mind you I'm using IE7

It's a cosmetic change. Small header redesign, that's all. The other redesign we did was MUCH larger and added a lot of different features. This time it's cosmetic to make it easier to browse and it actually takes up less space too.

I like the changes, but super-slow for me too. 300-600 items loading on each page, thought my Internet was being slow, but still able to DL at avg 950KB/s, using IE7 fully updated.

hmmmm...I just got on 40mins ago.
ZERO speed change from my end. Using FF *latest version*.
I even TRIED to overload my browser by opening simultaneously 20 tabs ALL RFD threads....no delay. noticeable or not. Wish I knew what you were talking about :(.

What browser are you on?
I have no clue what the items might be but I would suggest you clear your cache or shift+reload the page and give it some time. Server still needs to catch up with all the new requests.
Please be patient.

Same here and I'm using IE6. It acts like my PC is running low on ram and is quite chunky/slow. I'll give it a few hours...good to know it's not just me.

If anyone can be more specific about what the browser is trying to download we'd appreciate it. I'm not sure what these items are and it's loading very smoothly over here.

I'm using IE 7.0. Fully updated. At the bottom of the IE window (the grey bar with information in it about zoom, connection, download status etc) it says:
(XXX items remaining) Waiting for http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=5555694...
XXX has been as high as 611 that I've got a screen shot of. Takes a good 5 seconds to download and proceed with the page. It does this every page reload, every new topic, every click on a thread or forum, etc.
I've got screens, but can't access any sites that would host them due to Websense :o
I've cleared all temporary internet files, the cache, browser history, etc. Still same thing.
I don't know how to find out any more information about what it's trying to load, can you tell me what I could do to figure that out?

It also appears in every one of the top "tabs" except for "Coupons". They have differing numbers of XXX items remaining, "home" and "deals" appear to be ~300, "Freebies and Features" 400-500.

On the main page, I'm loading over 600 images and on posts, loading 400+ pages ...
I noticed the difference right away ... and the change in speed, that's for sure. I don't know if I'm liking this, it's just running slow altogether and I'm on a high speed connection. I don't even want to imagine dial up.
Edit: I took a screen shot when it's loading the main page ... it's doing this ALL the time now.
Notice what's loading at the bottom left.

Edit: It's actually locking my computer as well, in the sense that I can't scroll through the thread without letting it load completely ... before, you could scroll through and read while it loads.

Using Maxthon verion 1.6.1.22 and IE Version=6.0.2900.2180.

Still NOT fixed for me.. Using both Maxthon and IE 6.0
Also worth mentiong, under My Options, Edit Profile, Avatar, almost all of the options give script errors:
Line:214
Char:2
Code:0
Error:Object expected
URL:http://www.redflagdeals.com/user/index.php?action=edit_profile
Also reports same for Line 215, 341 and 380.
Does not happen on Firefox, so it looks like an IE 6.0 issue.

It was as if it was loading the "images" of the headers and THEN loading the page, because it locked the screen and THEN you could scroll and only 5 items would be left to load (normal updated pages).
It seems to be much better now, just checked back in and it seems to be fixed.

Clearing the cache in IE7 fixed any issues, but Opera still struggles. The whole thing comes to a screeching halt even if I'm viewing another tab while waiting for RFD to load..
I'll just use IE7 + RFD for now, but it used to work so well in Opera :(

That's funny, if there was a website that wouldn't work in FF because it uses IE specific "features" (which happens...) then FF users would be demanding that the webmaster "fix" the page.
Here, IE6 loads 600+ items every time a page is loaded. WTF are these 600 items, does the website designer not even know??

any webmaster that makes a website using IE specific 'features' has no idea what they're doing.
FF users WOULD demand that a webmaster "fix" the page because FF uses a much more standards-compliant rendering engine.
