Here (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10088799&catid=24193&CMP=NLC-email_weekly) at futureshop.ca (web only). Not bad for the specs you're getting, if you don't mind refurbished units. Warranty is 90 days.

Nice find! Is HP Refurbished decent? The 90-day warranty has me a little edgy....

Yeah I'm not sure myself... would probably search for some feedback from people who bought refurbished HP laptops before diving in.

The Dell Vostro 1000 Notebook for $499 is a better deal right now. If you wanted to double the RAM to 2GB (+$90) and HD to 120GB (+$40) to match this HP laptop, the total price is only $629.

You could install yourself and save $$.

This is a refurb too.

Is this on par with that dell 640m deal?

I remember getting this one a few months ago when I first started hunting for a notebook. The one they shipped me was without webcam. I eventually got a full refund through local futureshop and FSonline for the shipping.

I didn't do any testing on the notebook though. If i had to chose again between this one and the dell I have right now. I'd still pick Dell.

You can't stick a Core 2 Duo CPU in an AMD based system. I don't like the whole refurbished part myself, but this will certainly outperform the system in the Vostro deal. If you upgrade the RAM to 2 GB, the CPU to the Turion TL-56 (which is still slower than the T5200), and the HD to 120 GB, the Dell will be $729.

I can't believe how Dell got so many people excited with the oldest marketing trick of the low entry point level but offer expensive add-ons?

$90 for an extra MB RAM?

Cheers.

Dell got so many people exicted because it's the best deal as an entry laptop. You can't find a notebook at 499 that can match the specs of Inspiron 1501/Vostro 1000.

Let's say you do the non-sensible upgrade to 2GB and 120GB, that's $130+499 = $529 dollars, still $200 less than that of HP refurb with 90 days warranty.

2x $60 (going rate for DDRII Sodimms of this type) = $120

How is $90 a bad deal? Going rate fo 2 512 sodimms is $30-40.
