Friend of mine has a fast food restaurant in Mississauga...recently had a break in...thieves managed to get by two motion detectors without setting off the alarm...is this possible??? The owner tripped the alarm as soon as he walked in the morning but how did the thieves manage to get by them? Any ideas?

Second question is how much should he be looking at spending for say maybe 4 cameras and a good quality digital video recorder.

Thanks

They don't have prices online as far as I can see, but a quick call should get them.

I ordered a DVR card with 8 cameras on Friday from Montreal. cost me $1650+computer. I think it's a good price, especially compared to a 'friend' who quoted me double that for an inferior model.

I'll let you know how well it works when it arrives at the end of this week.

Can't wait to capture all those tards dumping garbage behind my building!!! GRRR!!!

My advice to you is this, Cameras and DVRs are your third line of defence, your goal is to prevent them from coming in first.

1.Your friend should at a minimum change his locks (rekey or get high security)
I recommend Medeco high security as the keys are restricted. Harden the entry points, I.E. get a full length plate, or any sort of protection to make it harder to pry the door open.
Getting by Motion sensors is easy, anyone can do it as they don't actually detect motion, they go by heat signatures, move slow enough and it wont even notice.
You need to figure out how they got in.
2. Is the alarm monitored? Some alarms only go off for up to 5 minutes (some even less)
3. theres many types of cameras and a lot of the crappy cheap ones do not provide good enough resolution to capture the perp in action, especially at night you will need IR cameras and even then you might not get lucky. The one possible outcome from having a DVR and cameras is seeing how they got in and preventing that from happening again.

In my experience I have seen thieves break into businesses and actually steal the cameras and DVRs, so first thing is beef the perimeter.

Thanks guys...I appreciate it!

lapopal...yes...the alarm is monitored. The door wasn't pry'd open...the entire glass window panel was removed and thus the alarm contact on the door didn't set-off the alarm either. These guys must've really known what they were doing. They didn't manage to get anything though since there wasn't any cash or anything valuable to take lying around.

I totally see what you're saying about the third line of defense. Why wouldn't the thief just steal the DVR so there would be no record of him. I guess it's going to have to be well hidden.

Thanks for the Medeco info...there's tons of info there...will pass it on to my buddy!

Thanks to you all!

I would imagine a glass cutter and some suction cups that you use to replace auto glass?

As far as cam+DVR goes, check Costco.ca.

The door has glass almost from top to bottom. From what I understand they removed metal (or maybe aluminum) strips (4 of them) that are around the glass. I guess the aluminum strips are between the frame of the door and the glass. I didn't see the door but that's how he explained it to me. They then must've used suction cups to remove the entire glass panel. You can see scratch marks around the edges of the aluminum so they must've pried those out. There ended up being no damage to the glass or the metal strips. He ended up paying $100 to have the glass and the strips secured back in their place.
