This thread is for all you non-engineers...
Engineers go here: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=475465
I am a 4th year student in Science, I've worked as a recruitment officer going school-to-school and am pretty involved with campus life.
Ask/discuss any issues or questions you have about UW here...anything from academics, housing, student life -- whatever! :)

The only cs241 available for UW CS students is 830am Tuesday and Thursday, I doubt I can wake up...

You'll probably need to take the CS-specific CS241. You'd need to get an override from one of your advisors to take the other ones and I doubt they "I won't be able to wake up on time" excuse will fly.
In other news, I've managed to schedule my classes so the earliest one is at 11:30 AM. Woooo. Go go being in 4th year and having to take only 2 requisite classes per term, with the other 3 being electives (though 1 of them has to be chosen from a list of 3rd and 4th year CS courses)

I was wondering if the materials and assignments would be the same. So I would just go to those lectures even though I am not enrolled in them

2A Computer Science in fall.
I hope the CS 241 classes are the same because I have two schedules.
1. The UW schedule with all of my courses
2. MY schedule with the same courses but at more convenient times.
The reason I did this was because when registering for classes, I came across WAYYY too many unknown conflicts and I became very frustrated.. lol

Clearly it's too late for this years frosh as they've already been assigned rooms; however, V1 is good too ASSUMING you get a good house.. I had an amazing one and had the time of my life in first year. I know others have said that their houses were a lot more dull though... so I guess it's just luck of the draw. (My house was two floors of girls and one floor of guys... that was pretty fantastic considering the ratio in the general UW population!)
All first years I knew who were in MKV or UWP said it was very antisocial and everyone kind of kept to their own suites. I lived in both of the preceding during upper year and it was good then, but for first year you definitely want to be in a dorm type housing and not suites.
Of course, those not in the dorms probably got better marks than me in first year, but hey, you're only a frosh once... enjoy it. ;)

Haha, MKV/UWP probably can't begin to compare to CLV in terms of isolation. It's crazy how they're throwing frosh in those townhouses. I got a v1 llc building with 2:1 girl to guy ratio that is connected to main building :)

OOOOHHHH I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING!!!
All of you V1 residents with the mandatory meal plans, make sure you get the SMALLEST meal plan available.
Here is my logic:
- The school advertises a 50% off discount if you have a meal plan.
- The problem is that at the beginning of the term, your meal plan money gets cut in half. Therefore, in reality, you do not get 50% off.
- If you finish your meal plan money and add flex dollars to your account, you get a REAL 50% discount!!!
So the plan is to get the smallest meal plan, and if you happen to max it out, then you will get 50% off:cheesygri
Just a little tip for all of my future froshers, lol

Uh oh.. time to change it..
Stupid UW site is down though =/ I thought they only deducted 50% from your basic meal plan and not the flex?
I have the "standard" meal plan and it basically says I get the basic meal plan along with $x of flex dollars..

Hey Bud, If you want to party, you can do it at any university. Its more dependent on your personality than anything else. Party scale i would rank Waterloo 8/10.
Here are some good places to party
REV - the residence
REV - The Night club (this place is really big and nice, 2 dance floors)
Fed Hall - (Its like on campus club)
Bomber - A nice Pub
If you're worried about ladies.. just stay far away from Engineering and go towards Math, Accounting, science and arts area. Or you can bum at DC.

definately depends on how old you are too.
Or whether you can get a fake ID.
I took the luxury of chilling an extra year in highschool (stupid french immersion) to get my last few prerequisites. Once i got to Uni, I was 19.
That opened up many doors for me when it came to partying. I wasn't limited to houseparties which most of the time were pretty ****** of shut down by police.
I got to go to clubs and bars and have a good overall experience.
But definately, if you're gonn have fun, its up to you!

Woohoo! AFM!
You could always help me out on my plan to lure the geese to wlu. I figure that $100 or so worth of bread is a small price to pay to get rid of the geese...
*edit*
you think it would be possible to make that into a club at UW? perhaps we could get funding to cover the bread...

I guess it all depends on what faculty ur in. Some friends of mine in Rec and Leisure had a great time all the time during their frosh week activities.
As for me, I'm in the Math Faculty since I'm in CS and theres nothing too big to look forward too. The big events that all faculties participate in (like monte carlo night, toga party, etc) are fun and are a great way to meet people, but the math activities suck. Like they become very redundant after a day or so. And most of the stereotypical math students come out of their shell during the week to only go back in it. They'll run around talking, laughing and smiling all week long, and then once class starts, they wont even make eye contact with you.
Well at least that's my own personal experience.
Maybe it's because i'm a six foot tall black guy who stands out like a sore thumb in the math faculty. iunno, lol.
Just make the most of the week, meet alot of friends on residence ( not only partying friends, classmates as well), and if you don't feel like going to an event, don't go. Nobody is gonna hold it against you.

Definitely wasn't because of the way you look or anything. My brother is in 4th year at McMaster, he told me how there is alot of competition against each other, especially in the first year. It was especially strong in his university because apparently, it's not the marks that determine whether you go through to the next year, it's if you can make it into one of the "top" students.
I know it would be a great opportunity to meet new people, but I also know that it won't be the only way.
Do you know if we are allowed to "skip" events and just go some place else?

Oh yea man. Its University.. Nobody can force you to do anything you don't want to do. They dont take attendance or anything.
Last year I skipped out on alot of events and nothing happened.

It's totally worth it man!! 90+% of my friends right now I met during frosh week, or friends of friends i met at frosh week...
its not only activities with faculty or dean -- actually there was maybe 1.
We had scavenger hunts, mini-games, sports...just alot of fun stuff to help you meet the people in your faculty and residence...
do not miss!!...you could skip out on events u dont want to go to..I've done that, but dooo participate in the majority!

Hey guys. I'm about to head in to 3A biomedical sciences in the fall. I transferred to the program after my 2B term in biochemistry. Anyway, if you guys have any questions about UW and the faculty of science or what not, I'd be happy to share my experiences. Here are a few notes I'd like to add to previous posts that were made.
1) Going for the smallest meal plan is a good idea. Not sure how the adding money after you're done works but in my experience, most people don't even finish their meal plans let alone finding the need to top it up.
2) REV is the residence to be if you want to party. On a side note, there is a night club called Revolution (shortened to Rev, don't get confused). Oh...and starting this year, if you get an infamous triple room, have fun. ;)
3) Wear whatever you want, whenever you want. No one cares...unless you walk around campus in your underwear or dressed like a hobo or something. Dress normally, you'll fit in fine.
4) Orientation week looks lame on paper, but if you go, you might actually have quite a bit of fun. You'll meet lots of people from your faculty and who knows, some of the people you meet during that week may become your best friends for the rest of your university career (if not life).
And...that's pretty much all I needed to say. Good luck in the future guys (and girls).

Hey guys, I got into REV! But I wondering, I haven't visited the Physical Activities Complex yet, but what's it like there? Membership? Do people workout there? If so, is it better than Rev's weightrooms?
Also, when everyone is studying during exam weeks, where are the best (quietest) places to study either alone, or group study? Cuz when I visited during exam week, I was wondering where all the students went lol.
Lastly, I was wondering where do you guys think you spend most of your time? In your room? rez? library? faculty? friend's place?
I'm so excited for the upcoming year! :cheesygri

You already have access to all the gym facilities when you pay your fees. I personalyl enjoy going to CIF (on the northside of Columbia) to work out...it's more roomy and has newer equipment, but it seriously lacks free weights (it's more of a "girly" gym). PAC is where you would find the testosterone. REV has limited equipment but isn't as busy as CIF or PAC can be.
There are a bunch of drop-in sports and activities scheduled throughout the week, check the campus recreation website for a schedule.
In terms of places to study, alot of people go to the libraries. Every building is generally open 24/7 so you can go study in a lecture hall or classroom if you wanted too. I either studied in the V1 great hall or in the SLC quiet room. the SLC quiet room is the quietest place on campus even if it's packed. Libraries can get noisy (especially DC)

There's also a swimming pool (with a sauna room) if you are interested in swimming. Just remember to bring your watcard and you are good to go (oh, and bring your own lock)
I find studying at rez (I was at UW place) to be quiet enough. DC and DP has quiet areas too. But don't rely on the non-quiet areas though (as pointed out, those places can be noisy)
For me, I spend most of my time in rez (basically all the time minus lectures, and a few hours per week doing sports and stuff), playing DS

Depends which bus you take. One of them goes to Guelph before Toronto and takes forever. A good guide would be to check the arrival times on greyhound, it is pretty much accurate.

Well every Friday the FEDBus goes to Toronto and it's cheaper and faster than Grehound..only downside is that it's an actual school bus. Like 9$ one way, but you can go to Scarborough Town, Downsview..and some other places...and return trips are on Sunday usually departure at around 7pm.

For books you can sign up for lockers at the respective faculty societies (think Student Councils for each faculty).

How is Biomedical Science at UW is it really hard and what kind of co-op jobs do you get?
Thanks
Biomedical Science isn't a co-op program. It goes September to April and a summer break for 4 months.
In terms of difficulty, I would say it's on the lower end in the Faculty of Science. However, it depends on which science courses you take for your electives. Some are definitely alot easier than others.

So I hear that you can take the Greyhound buses back to Toronto on the weekends. How long is the trip usually? And does it interfere with schoolwork/eat up too much time? But then, how would you rate your workload?
Having taken Greyhound at the minimum every other week to go back to Toronto for the past 3 years at Waterloo, I can say it's not bad.
More expensive then FedBus, but it's a lot more comfortable, as it actually is a proper tour bus with big seats as opposed to the School Bus FedBus uses. Trip is 1 hour, 20-30 minutes on average though it will depend on Traffic. If you take the Bus that also stops in Cambridge, it takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. If you take the one that goes through Guelph, it can take from 2 hours up to 2 hours, 30 minutes... Don't take those.
Also worth noting that Greyhound takes you either to Union Station or to the Bus Terminal (a block away from Bay + Dundas and Dundas Station). I don't know where FedBus stops but I don't think it goes downtown (I think it goes to Kipling Station?). I live Downtown, the Greyhound is much more convienent for me since I can just walk home from the bus station.
There are a few buses that stop directly at Ring Road, but if you leave at non-normal times, there are buses leaving every 1-2 hours from Kitchener. Since we have the Universal Bus Pass (*grumble grumble damn charge i'll show you universal, i'll ride the grt all day and night you bastards*) you can take GRT to/from Kitchener Bus Station.. Takes about 30 minutes on the normal bus, or like 5-10 on the I-Express.

Wow thanks for the reply. I'm assuming then that the FedBus will take 2 hours or so? Considering it makes several stops around Toronto. Since I live in Markham, FedBus seems like a better option since it will stop at Scarborough Town Centre.

There is a different FedBus for every stop, so if you were to take the Scarborough Town Centre bus, it goes directly there. It generally takes about 90 mins, but it depends on the departure time. The 4:00 bus takes alot longer than the 1:30 bus, simply due to traffic.
EDIT: Just saw that they no longer have 2 departure times. That sucks. Getting on the 1:30 was less of a pain.

Yeah...not a co-op program. In terms of co-op programs for science though, you can generally expect to be doing some research in one form or another. When I was still in biochemistry, I had a job working as an earth science research assisitant. Other people I know did other things like microbiology or horticulture. It's all lab work really, or so I would imagine.
Difficulty for biomedical sciences is not very difficult at all I would imagine unless you purposely make it difficult to yourself. Honestly, every term you have about 2-3 electives (free, complementary, or science depending on program requirements) and it's up to you whether you want to take the harder courses or chill and take the easier ones.

Not true, though it is the majority. I'm in Computational Science - Physics, and atleast for the Physics part of Science I've had classmates doing matlab programming work for sensors, MRI stuff at hospitals, and some other lab stuff in there too. Another classmate of mine worked at Bruce Nuclear for two terms, doing some simulation and other stuff. It's hard to find a science related job within Toronto area, though Environment Canada provides a fair amount of jobs in Downsview.
There are a lot of physics type jobs at Triumph in Vancouver.

I agree that there are a bunch of research jobs available for co-op. There are also funding programs (such as NSERC USRA) that cover part of your paycheck if you do research for a Waterloo professor. This makes it a lot easier to get a job, especially for your first co-op, since the professor pays less out of their own pocket.
As far as physics-related jobs go, I found that most of them are in Waterloo. With the IQC, Perimeter Institute, UW research assistants, and spin-off companies like RIM, you could easily complete your entire degree without ever leaving Waterloo for co-op terms.

I lived in V1 last term with whole bunch of 3rd 4th year students who replaced stream 4 coops... it's great location close to campus..imo
It's just fall term upper year students cannot apply to V1, REV, MKV because school has to house 1st years..
Luckily, this comming fall i got a spot at UWP.. and if I could get a spot, I wouldn't mind V1 again...
If you want to get spots in residence try beginning of the term and apply as quick as possible.. even applying after midterm is not that bad...
I really had bad experience living off campus so I decided to stick with school housing paying extra bucks...

Yep, exactly my thought.. they get 1k off but i dun think that makes significant difference since university charges very high residence fee for 1st years anyway...

Ahahaha... Yeah there are some of these in Waterloo. Not on campus, but near campus. You usually encounter them on your way home.
They wear white dress shirts and black ties and move in groups of two. I always encounter the same ones (3 times this summer term) and they are not too aggressive. I usually just tell them "Sorry, I gotta get home" and just ignore them.

I didn't really have much of a problem in first year but in second year I bumped into these dudes all the time. As you mentioned, they wear white shirts with black ties. When it's colder they usually also wear semi-long black jackets as well. There's at least four regulars floating around the areas near the two universities. They also wear these little name tags that say "Elder _____". I think they're mormons or something. One of them gave me a little card/booklet type of thing and it said something about mormons on it.
Anyway, when I've encountered them, they've generally been quite nice. Gets kind of annoying if you keep seeing them though. Try to keep your distance (i.e. stay on the other side of the street) if you see them though to save yourself from the annoyance.

One more question. Have any of you been able to take money off of your watcard? I've got a bit of money left over from my meal plan, and want to take it off. You're allowed to take money from your watcard but they charge a $10 fee I believe. But I'm not 100% sure if you can take transfer MP back (for flex dollars I know they will refund for the fee). Best thing is to go to the Watcard office and ask.

if you are near graduating, make sure you get a new watcard before you leave!!!
i graduated this year, and my original watcard expired in 2007. but i went to the office during my 4b and told them it didnt work anymore (it was pretty damaged already, both intentional and unintentional), so they gave me a new one expiring in 2011.
im not sure if it scans anymore in library, etc (can anyone confirm this?), but it is still great for use when u want student pricing (ie, tickets, fares, etc). plus, avoid the hassle of signing in under someone when going back to bomber/fed... lol

Are there AC sockets in UW's lecture halls? My friend is wanting to buy a laptop for university, and she's afraid that the laptop might run out of battery during lectures. If there are AC sockets then she can just plug in the AC adapter and wouldn't have to worry about that. Otherwise she'll have to purchase a larger capacity battery for her laptop.

Are you replying to my question? For the ones that do, are the AC sockets beneath every desk/table or just select few locations in the room where a student probably wont be able to reach it anyways?

I've never seen a non AC socket in a lecture hall.
Not every desk has one, there are a few located around the room.

It depends on the lecture hall, but depending on how many other people are there, there could be competition for them. Most of the time you will have to sit at the edge of the room also.
I wouldn't reccomend bringing a laptop to class honestly.

For the hearty meal plan, it's broken down to:
1580 of meal plan dollar + 460 flex dollar = 2040
However, half (or close to half) of the meal plan dollar is deducted for overhead cost. But in return, you get "half priced" food.
So the balance comes down to:
790 meal plan + 460 flex = 1250
Another lesson: ALWAYS buy the cheapest meal plan. If you run out of money, you can always reload it.

Yes the alumni card is good forever or something close to it... but since they have passed the UPass (bus pass thing) if you get a new WatCard before you graduate... it extends it for another couple of years and in the mean time you can use it to get on GRT busses for free... until they figure it out or start scanning your cards
Unfortunatly, for those who do not in live in the Greater Waterloo Region... the mandatory bus pass is a sham and they tied the cost into the FEDs fee which is nonrefundable.

Wait, so if you're getting 50% off food products, but you're also losing 50% of what you paid for "overhead costs", wouldn't it be the same if you didn't buy a meal plan at all?

Meal plans are mandatory at V1 and REV though. Other rez has alternate meal plans (13% off, but no overhead).
Also, if you happen to finish all the money and start to reload, you still get 50% off but they don't charge you any extra overhead. But you pretty much have to stay in UW during weekends to do that.

Went in and asked. You can only withdraw flex dollars, so meal plan money stays forever. If you pressure them somehow, I think they may refund it though.

How hard is it to get into the AFM program? I'm a grade 12 student and this program looks perfect for me, and I've heard nothing but good things about it. I was looking on the eInfo site (which has the all of the info for every university program) and the enrollment, in total, is only 165 for AFM. For the students here who are currently enrolled in the program, what grade average got you in? On the site it says "low to mid 80's" which seems very achievable for me but I'm worried that since they only accept a small amount of kids that I will need a much higher average. Do you have any recommendations or "words of wisdom" for trying to get into the program?
Thanks a lot, Zach

Funny you should mention that as my finance prof just informed us that each of us beat 14 others to get here. I'm in 3rd year and I got in AFM-PA with a 90% average. Back then, all you needed was around 85 for FM and 90 for PA (give or take a few points).
Now I hear you need even higher and you have to write some exam to get in. Perhaps a younger AFMer can provide more info. Glad I was in the year before these new requirements were implemented though :D.

Started this year, AFM applicants must write the AFMAA, an aptitude test based on general knowledge that basically tests to see if you qualify for the program. But to get invited in for the test, you do need a decent average. Number wise, from what I heard, this year AFM students were admitted with low 90s. This is for both FM and PA.
AFM has been quite competitive these past years and I'm glad I got in also before it got even more so. (I'm second year now by the way.)
Words of wisdom... I guess do good in your studies and become active outside of school. Volunteering and participating in extracurricular activities really help.
About AFM girls... There are attractive ones in the program, for sure, as long as asians are your cup of tea. =) [But I wouldn't go as far as to say they're the cream of the crop... There's plenty, but there ARE girls in other programs, just not as much as we do. ;D]

Lots of hotties in the science faculty too. Don't remember who told me this, but it is definitely true when people say that all the good girls are gone by the end of frosh week... so if you're planning on going here...
In any case, admission average isn't too big of a deal. Get a respectable high school average and nail the AFMAA... drop hints about ECs in the AFMAA because it is marked without referencing the rest of your application.
... and now I'm off to get gang raped by these textbooks. :|

Sorry to sound like a noob but what does EC stand for?

Those numbers are very misleading. That only shows how many people decided to accept out of all the people that applied. They school sends out many more letters of acceptance than they know they have space for because they know the vast majority will go somewhere else anyways.

The fact is that no matter how good your Afmaa is there will be atleast 100 people who wrote better than you.

I'm trying to transfer to Waterloo next year (My girlfriend goes there), and I'm a first year student at UBC right now.
I've called them and emailed them a couple times already but I was wondering if you guys had any extra information for transferring into Waterloo for second year.
My questions include,
1. What marks do i need to get early acceptance (I am easily maintaining a 95% average in first year.. it's a breeze compared to full IB. My goal is to finish with 88-94% avg) and also, when is the early acceptance? I realize marks needed will vary from program to program. The people on the phone wouldn't give me a clear answer.
2. What is the easiest respectable program I can get into as a backup. (I will also be applying to Laurier business. I would prefer business or law courses as I'm trying to go for an MBA/LLB program for grad school) So I would like law, business, or even psychology and english courses. I know that waterloo doesnt really specialize in the business but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit. The person on the phone said I'm missing some courses for that Arts/Business program so it would be more difficult, but I will be looked at for the legal studies program if i have at least a 70% average.
Basically is there anyone else who has transferred to Waterloo second year and can give me some tips for getting in without any problems.
I thought these questions were appropriate for this thread, and any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Thanks!

You get into Honours Math first then at the end of your first year you declare your major to be Act. Sci... Act. Sci. is hard, I have given up trying to pursue it. Hope you are super smart. Your marks for double degree will have to be alot higher and well rounded I assume. There aren't a lot of spots for that. As for myself, I'm switching to Honours Math/Business Admin, not quite the Double Degree, but I would have to apply for that... no thanks...

I don't quite understand why you want to go to Arts & Business (economics) while you have not taken any business courses and you are currently taking science courses. But anyway, I'm sure if you are around 80+ average you should be fine.
But if you are really concerned about your average, you should take courses that relate more to business instead of the sciences.

Nearly none of the AFM'ers this year failed the English Language Proficiency Exam - that's a big deal, considering 40ish% of other students fail it (rough estimate)
AFMAA isn't too bad; If you have something impressive on your AIF, restate it. You want to give off the impression that you know how to manipulate people, not boss people around.

High demand for it there, thats all. They probably saw the numbers of applicants there and decided there were enough to justify a testing center. You don't want to trust too many people with proctors, after all.
I think they had a location in Ottawa and UBC as well for this reason.

Actually it's only Act Sci + Accounting + maybe CS

What is the business and arts program at Waterloo like? Is a good and well respected program and is it hard to get accepted into?
Also, does anyone know the site that shows the averages of the students who got accepted into each program at every university? My guidance teacher was showing it to us during a university presentation but I don't remember the site. On the site (I think it might have a been on OUAC or linked from it), you could click on every Ontario university, select any program and it would show the percentage breakdown of the kids who got accepted and what their marks were. For example, I remember that the average mark for acceptance at Queen's Commerce was 89.7%. It showed the percentage of students who got accepted with marks from 80-84%, 85-90%, etc.
Thanks

No, A&B isn't hard to get into, nor is it a well-respected program. There's a lot of nice looking girls in that program though.

I think Accounting has taken the lead with regards to the lowest ratio of Caucasians to other races.

I said maybe because CS 134 was my last CS class I've ever taken, and I didn't talk to enough CSers to confirm :cheesygri

What's the ratio's like in accounting? Act Sci's ratio is pretty low too :cheesygri
I guess it's hard to tell because you usually go to one type of classes and not the others

Ratio is REALLY low in accounting.
Though not really THAT low - my business simulation group is half-asian half-white.

Oooh... forgot about Act Sci... That's a good contender for the prize.
Well in my last class, there were 4 Caucasians out of 25 people.

All the fees for UW can be found on the UW Finance page:
http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infofin/students/stdfees.htm
Under "Undergraduate Fee Schedule", just select the term and you'll get a list of all the fees that you'll have to pay (tuition-wise). For residence and stuff, there's a nice list over here:

Have any of you taken advantage of that table vendor in SLC selling DVDs & games? The prices seem to be pretty damn cheap even without considering taxes are included in the prices (more like... "evaded"... ^^;; ).
Blu-rays for $20 each (and no tax), as well as games for every recent console, many (mostly?) at prices well under retail. Picked up Zelda:TP for the Wii for $40 on the dot. Hell, that's cheaper than Sig's gaming sale prices if you factor in shipping. Also had Smash Bros. for $40, but I already had a copy of that.
And no... I'm not in any way affiliated with them. :cheesygri

Can someone with experience please comment on CS230 and CS234???
Are they hard?
Mostly memorizing or programming?
Tips?
Preferred/hated profs?
Other stories?

I thought CS234 was considerably easier than 134. Not only that, I found the material fairly interesting and I thought JP Pretti was a great prof. A few fairly straight forward assignments w/ bonus, moderately tricky finals. It made me want to take more CS.

Hi everyone,
I've been accepted to waterloo this coming september for mechanical engineering coop. Just checked out my schedule today, and holy smoke, its PACKED..full days almost everyday. I'm guessing everyone's schedules like this but how do you deal with it, is it hard?
How much time will I have left for social stuff and partying. I guess just take it easy for the first bit, settle in, then get going with the fun? Any mech engineers wanna chime in? Is it easier than it seems? thanks
I've been reading this thread just now and have learned alot already. I'm gonna be sure to show up for frosh week before all the chicks are gone.
oh and last problem. I don't have residence...what should I do? I'm thinking of renting out an apartment if I have to but what are the chances of a spot opening up?
thanks alot in advance, appreciate it.

Thanks for answering my question. I took it at the beginning of the semester. Then I looked at the first assignment and the list of boring topics that were going to be covered for the term and said F that.
For me, that first programming assignment would have been at least 10 hours, 20 even. Yep, F that :)

1. Frosh week won't do you much good in the Eng Frosh... unless you're with the chem engineers. ;D
2. No res? How did THAT happen? Beg to get into the UWP courts? Some are still empty...

Someone should make like an FAQ for frosh with one of the questions being, "How will I have time to socialize with such a packed schedule?" and other commonly asked questions.
I'm not saying that the poster who just asked that is annoying, I'm just saying that it would cool if someone spent some time to answer that question elegantly once and for all.

I got into Math/CA. Question for any AFM/Math/Biotech - is it fairly easy to get a co-op placement with the Big Four? And how much can I expect to earn on my first workterm?

It's not that easy to get into big 4. I would say expect to earn anywhere from 15 to 25 first term depending on what you get into.
Good luck =D

My GOD! What is this!:
* The ResNet bandwidth usage limit is currently 500 megabytes (MB) per day.
* The limit is like a gas tank that refills at a rate of 21 MB per hour (500 MB per day).
* If you download faster than the refill rate your tank will eventually become empty. When your tank is empty you will be put into a slow queue.
* In the slow queue your bandwidth usage is restricted and you will notice much slower internet speeds.
* You will be released from the slow queue once you allow your tank to refill above the empty point.

Why do they refer to our internet usage like its a tank? I don't think we 1st years are that dumb (we did get into uni didn't we?)

are you upset that the bandwidth limit is so small or that they had to use the tank analogy?

On the bright side, when I was there their limit was 1.5 gb per week, now they give more than twice the amount.

Yeah its not bad at all, I don't even use that much at home. The tank reference is a bit weird.
Another weird thing is the "What to bring" link in their Get Ready4Rez website which actually lists a teddy bear. I mean common, who came up with that? If I want to get publicly humiliated than I'll walk around Yonge Street in my shorts which might get some laughs.

ResNet is horrible, not reliable. If you torrent or file share you will be banned off the network (and pay some fee to reconnect).
It's not all bad though, everyone uses DC++ to share files on campus network. Very good speeds (possible to get 10mb/s)... and people share tons of stuff.
