you can DIY, or via second hand cellular shops (pmall)..
not recommend going to service providers, as their cost are overpriced.

your gonna need a drm packager from sony ericsson....but their current packager doesnt use drm 2.0 and that is the protection needed on the W580.....so your gonna have to wait.....or you could always use wotan server to debrand it.....
http://www.wotanserver.com/en/supported-phones/sonyericsson-w580-debranding/
Though i'm not sure that wotan server will help unlock the mp3 ringtones
unlocking the phone will only let you use the phone with other carriers....the rogers firmware will still be on it....an everything will still be the same(ie. no flash themes, no mp3 ringtones).....your going to have to flash/de-brand your phone

No, Wotan server only does unbranding.

Steps to unlocking your phone:
1. Go to www.howardforums.com
2. If you haven't already registered, do so.
3. Search for member called Treatz (note: he's extremely easy to find.)
4. Message him about unlocking a w580i.
5. Do what he says.
Pretty easy. He charges like $60 for harder phones like the W580i.

Unbranding using Wotan server included unlocking MP3 ringtones for me, though that was on a W810i.. No idea about the W580i.

I have the w580i myself and I'm still trying 2 find out how 2 unlock it but so far I've managed to unlock the mp3 ringtones.
There are plenty of places on the net for you to dl the stuff u need 2 debrand the phone. Just need the data cable.
You can do it for free or under $3 at some places.
I did it at www.topsony.com before I realized some places hosted the files for free.
BTW there are cheaper places 2 get the phone unlocked like this for example: http://www.gsmphone-unlocking.com/product.php?productid=2820&cat=184&page=3

just find a reputable store to do it for you. its not worth bricking your brand new phone rendering it useless because u screwed up something.. sometimes u brick it its worthless and can not be fixed.

Well, unlock codes usually don't brick a phone, its just difficult to find a trustworthy AND cheap unlock code supplier

I never had a problem.
Perhaps you're looking in the wrong places?

I think we have different definitions of cheap ;) maybe? I've found some for $15 (which I think is the definition of cheap) but definately kept in mind that person could have just taken my money...

LOL...this thread has been infused with about three tangents. NICE!
Unlocking != debranding != unlocking mp3s.....Oiiiiii:twisted:

Unlocking mp3s is part of debranding though...lol
Anyways, someone teach me how to unlock please? I really wanna learn =( How do people get those unlock codes? Do they generate random codes and trial-and-error it XD or do they get the list from somewhere?

You'll need some firmware files first though before you can do it, try looking around for it, then you can de-brand it, and also unlock as well.

unlocking phones is not for the average person to do...
older phones are easier to unlock by yourself while the newer ones either haven't been cracked or have some thing (like test points) that you need to do to unlock.
i've only done 3 myself... failed once. lol
if you're in Toronto... there are plenty of places that does it. But trustworthy... I've only been to one guy (Oriental... Brimley and Sheppard - the guy near the escalator) to fix the once failed unlocking attempt...
the other place i recommend is at First Markham Place, but i can't remember the name... digi something...

for getting it done at a shop:
most places should only charge $20-30 for that model. most w580i are db2020 cid52. for CID52 there is a free patch unlock (setool) that most unlockers can/will do for you so long as the TAC (first 6 digits of the 15 digit IMEI) is correct. Remember that unlocking is a business, so while it may not cost them any money to do it, they are still providing a service, peace-of-mind, and/or expertise. the patch unlock will work just fine unless you flash your phone in the future. a permanent unlock for the w580i will cost you closer to $50+ as it will cost the unlocker considerably more (around ~$30).
for DIY:
well as long as you dont break it, this shouldnt cost you more than $10-20 depending on the credit reseller or tool used. a debrand/flash is always free with the right software.
AS BUBBLE TEA SAID
Unlocking is NOT debranding or unlocking MP3. Debranding is simply flashing from one firmware to another and removing carrier-specific pre-programmed settings.
Although, I do love when people come to me for an unlock and I tell them they won't get MP3s out of it. They either act embarrassed or leave thinking I know nothing. LOOL.

Setool has a free flasher available. There may also be free solutions at the board se-nse.com.

rofl, noobs. unlocking is not the same as unbranding. unbranding simply removes the rogers branded OS and UI, restores the phone to original factory manufactured software, which would allow you to use mp3 ringtones.

You are getting ripped off if you're paying anywhere near that much for a permanent unlock. I've been doing it remotely for 3 months (check my feedback) and no one has had to pay more than $20.
Although, I do love when people come to me for an unlock and I tell them they won't get MP3s out of it. They either act embarrassed or leave thinking I know nothing. LOOL.
Lol, I know the feeling. So I usually tell everyone to call it debranding instead of unbranding.

OK I am really confused here..
I also would just like to be able to use MP3's a ring tone on my wife's new 580i but Rogers has locked it out (I think this is lame considering my phone from rogers 3 years could do it no problem).
So what exactly needs to be done to the phone to make this possible. All this talk about unlocking or debranding is a little confusing here and I hate to say I am a total noob when it comes to cell phone modding.

flash the phone with original firmware and there you go.

OK I think I am figuring it out... debranding is just putting the original phones firmware back on so I am not slammed with all the rogers restrictions and advertising.
Unlocking allows me to use any sim on the phone. So will I run into any issues with rogers by debranding the phone? i.e. I have to take it in for warranty cause the keys cracked?

Yeah, that's right.
Debranding or Flashing: restores the phone to its original "fresh-from-manufacturer" firmware, getting rid of all the crap and restrictions put on it by the service provider.
Unlocking: allows the phone to be used with any sim card, not just being locked to one network/provider.
As for the warranty thing, some say they don't care. But to be safe, just re-flash your phone with Rogers' firmware before taking it in =).
Oh and just thought I'd say this: there is no such thing as "unlocking MP3s" lol. There are ways to work around it with a branded phone, but the only way to truly "unlock" them is through debranding.
Unlocking MP3s is PART OF debranding!!!

Great thread I learned quite a bit in these 3 small pages. Thanx everyone!
Oh and please more people need to list their unlocking stores so we can go there! & more sites that offer good information about all this phone modding stuff as well!
Oh hey this is a really good question I just thought of...
Do you lose your phone number contacts, pictures, etc when you unlock or debrand a phone?

Debranding and patch unlocking will erase your contacts (except the ones on your sim) and pics and games, etc. So make a backup of everything.
Permanent unlocks are a built-in function of the phone, so you do not lose anything. You just gain the freedom to use any network you please.

Ok I've read extensively into this... so much that I am about to kill a potato.
Alright so I got myself the programs like Setools, XS++, simlockgenerator etc.
I got some of the Main and Filesystem files, for debranding
I'm just really intimidated about following through and doing it.
I would pay someone at pmall etc to do it, but I don't trust them either, plus I need a few custom things done, like using ASIA, TAIWAN CHINESE TRAD regional FW
Can I do all this with the regular cable that came with the phone?

I had my w580i unlocked and debranded for $30 in Winnipeg. Unfortunatley the Keys cracked, and 2 of the front facing buttons no longer had a reliable contact to the board beneath so I had to bite the bullet and send the phone back to Rogers to get fixed. While they fixed it they flashed the phones' software.
Really don't want to have to pay another $30 to get it done again. Any other cheaper alternatives. Mind you I'll probably end up going to the guy again anyway but hopefully i find a better option before it comes to that. *&^!ing hate Rogers and every cellular teleco for that matter for their locking policies. They already have you locked under contract, just give me the phone un-neutered damnit!

I'm not sure if it's against RFD rules so I'm not going to post anything. But if anyone needs help unlocking/debranding/anything with the w580 I can help you out for free, just PM me.
I hate it when people put a price tag on helping you. I had cracked keys and rebranded my phone before bringing it for warranty and everything went fine.
Sorry to people asking for help still. I've long moved to the US and stopped watching RFD. Also, I broke my w580 and I'm not longer current with any se help.

I followed this link and it worked. You DO NOT need to do anything to your phone.
http://cellphoneforums.net/sony-ericsson/t263402-mp3-your-ringtones-w580i.html
I am still trying to look for ways to unlock the phone so that it can use other carrier's SIM card though... (ways that I can DIY for free...)
