Is any additional cost after purchased a GPS? Do you have to pay the monthly subscription for the maps? If there isn't, do I get the updated maps free from the manufacture sites?

Access to GPS satellites is free. Update maps, however, depend entirely on the manufacturer/maker of the software. Some offer periodic updates as part of newer versions of their software (typically PC based GPS systems), others may charge for update maps, and some offer updated maps free of charge (like Google).
