Laptop - Yes or No?

I was thinking about getting a laptop but I wasn't sure if it would be worth all the money in the end and if it would be really practical. If I do get a laptop I would just mostly be used for web surfing, watching movies and maybe playing counter-strike (I assume that the laptop would run this flawless because any old desktop could really) on-the-go so I'm just asking would a laptop be good for me or no?

I used to play CounterStrike Source on my dad's Thinkpad T30 (with 32mb INTEGRATED video ram).. and it worked. Not well, but it ran.

Any modern laptops would run CS. Yeah, its better to get a laptop. Sure you dont get the expandability that you would get with a desktop, but its pack-n-go with a laptop.

Go for it. Get a decent IBM Thinkpad, or if you're really clumsy, a Panasonic Toughbook :twisted:

Are you going to be using it for school or traveling with it? If not i would suggest a desktop, b/c since you want to play CS on it your going to have to carry a mouse anyways. The price of a desktop is almost the same as laptop, but you get more power and storage.

I won't be using it for school since they don't allow it (still in high school) and I would never bring it there in the first place to avoid it being stolen. I will mostly be bringing it when traveling yes for example, camping or if i go to a friend or relatives place and what not. I already have a mid-range gaming desktop that I plan to upgrade/scrap when crysis is released =) I am aware of the price-per-performance comparing laptops and desktops and this is why I asked if I should bother with one.

I wouldn't bother if you're in high school. Just wait until you're heading to university before you get one. For now just stick with your desktop and upgrade as you see fit since it's much cheaper and you'll get more performance. You don't really need to bring a laptop everywhere you go and even if you do, like to camping, you won't have any outlet to plug in or wireless (in the middle of the woods) so you're just stuck with word processing/movies/music. Don't even think about gaming on a battery.

I believe that a laptop will cost less in the long run due to lower power consumption. On the other end, you should considered factory warranties because if something breaks, the parts can cost an arm and a leg.

I also recommended that you go for it, very nice to carry around a laptop in the house even if you never leave the house with it.

Don't waste your money. Laptops are total $hit unless you really, really must be mobile.

The displays suck (small), keyboard sucks, hard drive storage sucks, and video performance also sucks. And all that for 150% the cost of a desktop with similar specs.

This may sound strange from a person who has a laptop, but I only bought that cuz I need it for university and business activities on the run. Anyone kidding themselves with "desktop replacement" laptops are clearly fools.

My advise to the OP would be to consider if mobility is really what he wants. I don't know of anybody who would carry around their laptop unless they are absolutely required to. No one enjoys carrying the extra weight and having constantly to worry about security for the laptop. Trust me, it's a pain in the buttocks.

I don't cost savings in power consumption would even be a consideration here. It would take you many many years to recover the price premium between a laptop and a similarly spec'd PC.

Thanks for all the great replies guys still taking it all in. The question mostly came up to me when I also wanted a new phone and I was looking at the N95... But i couldn't justify playing 700-800 for a phone when I could get a laptop for the same money but now it seems like both are outta the question heh. Oh ya and I took the liberty of adding a poll so vote away!

Agreed. It's pointless having a laptop if you're still in high school. If you're in grade 9 or 10 then just upgrading your current desktop should be sufficient. Heck, your desktop right now seems perfectly fine as it is.

Waiting for university before purchasing one is definitely helpful. You can have a computer with you at all times to occupy your time between classes or take notes if you want (personally, I'm more of a pen and paper kind of guy).

If you don't absolutely need it then don't even bother. In the mean time, just enjoy your desktop.

I'm actually moving onto grade 12 this september so I guess I have to wait another year for a laptop to be of any use to me XD
