Hi, I was just wondering if anyone here knew of a place that specialized in laptop repairs?
I know about Getronics because of Dell, but they want 60 dollars just for an estimate. If I do the repair, the 60 dollars is part of the cost, but if the repair ends up being a few hundred bucks, I might be better off just getting a new laptop.

It's the motherboard, but I'm not sure which. It could be the power card/power board part, but I honestly have no idea.
It went from turning on without even POSTing or going to the screen to now shorting out my AC adapter when I plug it in.

I'm just looking to get an estimate. The machine is already 5 or 6 years old, and I don't want to junk it completely... but if it's going to cost a few hundred bucks, I may as well buy a new low end laptop.

I am familiar with some of these outfits and anything serious like this is guaranteed to cost you that much, or maybe even more.

That's why they charge $60 unseen, because most people see the repair price, faint, then toss their old laptop in the garbage and call Dell. That $60 initial cost is, 99.9% of the time, the only money laptop repair shops ever see. And even after the laptop is repaired, there is no guarantee it'll last for long before the next part fails.

So do yourself a favor and just snag a new one.

Wow, yeah, I guess 200-300 is the standard price for motherboard or power board issues.

Yeah, I imagine a lot of people sort of freak out when they see the price. Personally, I kind of know what I'm in for. Ideally, it'd be an easy repair on the mobo instead of a complete replace. I've seen motherboards on eBay for around a hundred bucks with shipping, so I imagine that it'll cost quite a bit more than that to have someone look for the part and do the repair.

But yeah, even though the cheapo laptops from Dell have integrated graphics and whatnot, I imagine it's better than everything I have in my 8200, including the Geforce 4400 video card.
