First year law at Western.

Question for the people who've done it before: Can I get my student card and bus pass before the first week of September? If so, when will the registrar's office have all of that ready by?

You can get your student card before Sept. Just visit the registrar's office.
The bus pass is available at UCC starting Sept 1, I think. It is not possible to get it earlier.

hi, I just wonder how's the GPA requirement for transfer student coming from 1st year?

Actually Western did give me an offer early before, but due to $ and residence issues, I had to decline it and chose other uni which's located at my hometown. So I wonder if once I apply to Western again as a transfer student next year, will they consider this point too? Will this increase higher chances of acceptance in the future? Thanks.

Don't know but don't fall into the trap of standing in line with all the other Froshies.

Look for your student number cut in front of all them and when the rent a cops ask you point to your student number.

That's what I did in 4th year saved me a lot of time wasting away standing in line for no reason.

At UWO here too! :)

Going in to third year. Did the first two in MOS (Called ACS when I started) and am now doing my HBA @ Ivey.

If anyone has any questions about UWO or MOS I'd be happy to try and answer as well.

Do you guys have any suggestions for bird courses or at least courses that are easier and I can get a decent mark? I got a pretty heavy course load this semester with a bunch of essay courses so I don't wanna add more stress by choosing a tough elective. I need 2.0 credits in anything of my choice so I can take anything. Please give me some suggestions and if possible, please list the prof you took it with.

TIA

You should be able to get in no problem. If you do plan on transfering next year, make sure that the courses you take at which ever univ you'll be at will be accepted by western next year. The last thing you want to do is waste $5 grand and not have those courses accepted.

Compsci.

Math030.

Compsci and Math 030 (Calculus and Algebra) are not for everyone so I wouldn't really be recommending those to someone with an already heavy course load.

From personal experience, I would stay away from Geography 020, Poli-sci 021E (if Westmacott is teaching it; although I believe he is finally done)

Some easy courses I found to be were:
- Geography 155a/b (only of the Malczewski is teaching it)
- History 143/144 with Prof Kratz
- Economics 116/117 with Prof Brown (he actually gives you exam questions ;)
- Writing 020 - Don't bother if you really scuk at writing!

What courses are you currently taking? I'm guessing you're in first year since you didn't mention otherwise.

I know this sounds lame but you'll likely do better in a course if you find it interesting than if it there's not much material but you find it boring as ****.

But... if you've ever messed around with creating websites and doing html then Compsci 31 will be a walk in the park. I think this is as close to a bird course as you'll find.

I personally took Compsci 32 which deals with XML and such. It was extremely simple, having never done it before, but apparently some people had problems with it. I still am not sure why people found it challenging when you get a sample text file and you simply need to modify it. You also do a bunch of easy word, excel and access exercises. The instructions are right in the book so it's kind of hard to fail. BUT, unless you have some strange deep love for "Accounting Information Systems" I wouldn't take this course because you have to read an accounting information system textbook which is quite possibly the most boring subject known to man. Stick with 31. They don't have any of that...stuff.

All of my other courses were pretty challenging.

In Law 101 you got a bonus 10% for doing the online quizzes (just doing, not doing right) posting on the discussion board, and filling out the end of term surveys. I'm not sure if they still have that this year but it was pretty sweet. You don't really need to do much work for this course at all. There are usually 5-15 pages of assigned readings that you can do before class but the lecture material almost always covers everything in the textbook so it's not mandatory. The material itself is detailed, however, and though the course doesn't really require any work aside from studying for exams, I wouldn't take it unless you have an interest in Law. The exams were also not easy. You had to definitely know your stuff.

I wouldn't worry about this too much guys. As long as you don't go during student orientation when the giant groups of frosh get their bus passes the lines won't be THAT long. I'm sure everyone can spare 10 or 15 minutes of their lives to get the pass :)

How about Math 031 (Finite Mathematics)? If I had to choose between Math 030 and Math 031, which one would you guys recommend? I heard Math 031 is easier, is that true? But howcome there are more sections of Math 030 offered? Is it a more popular course? I need to take one math so I'm looking for one that requires less time working on huge amounts of problems and still get a decent mark.

BTW, I'm not looking for an easy way out by finding easy courses but these are not my core courses so I don't want them to get in the way of the courses that really matter. As well, I will be working part-time so I need all the help I can get to ease my schedule a bit and the last thing I want is for an elective to screw me over cuz I've heard that if you don't choose them wisely, it can be the hardest course you take the whole year.

A few more questions:

1) Does Western cap your downloads from Bittorent sources or P2P programs? Do they allow that at all?

2) Would I need to take a laptop to my classes for notes? I'm taking Math 030, BIZ 020, ECON 020, MOS 020, Comp Sci 032, and History 028E.

3) Anyone had these profs? Hard? Easy?

Math031 is for the mentally disabled. You get 1.5 hours to do a 30 minute test. Definitely 031 if you feel like slacking off.

In terms of whats easier 031 > 030 .... In general, Finite was always easier than Calculus and Algebra.

1) Western doesn't "cap" your downloads. They dont allow dowloading software what so ever! Any time its detected running on your computer, you will be kicked off the network for 2 hrs.

2) Out of the courses you mentioned, really, you could use your laptop only for History and MOS 020 UNLESS you are a pro and can draw economical graphs in word and can type crazy fast numbers for Biz 020.

3) Never had any of those.

Daf

actually that is not true

they do cap your downloads and you can download, not on the wirless but on reznet

download something called UWOGO or some other new proogram, ppl such as ur dons will know, and there is tons of stuff with super fast acess

FYI- u cannot use a VOIP with reznet.

1. When I was in first year (2002 - SMH) RezNet bandwidth wasn't capped. UWGO was ridiculously fast. Movies would d/l in under 10 mins.

2. I didn't take History 028, but for the other courses you'd only use a laptop for MOS 020. You have to buy a casebook for Biz 020 and all of the lecture slides are online. I wouldn't use a laptop for econ or math, and as far as I remember I read the Gazette and drank my coffee during Froggy's Comp Sci 032 lectures.

3. Leduc is awesome! I had him for 4th year Strategic Mgmt. I don't know how good he is for the Globalization course.

116 - economic history of Canada - it's a joke if you have it with Brown (pretty sure he is the only one that teaches it). It might be boring at times because he just talks throughout the class as he goes through different periods so I suggest having a laptop to type the notes. 2 midterms and a final (essay type). First mid term question he actually gives it to you and you have to prepare it. Second, gives you 4 possibilities, and 2 are on the exam and for final, gives you 8, and 4 are on. Thats at least how it was last year when I took him. It's a real easy course and I suggest picking up his 117 as well which is the continuation of 116.

150/151 - Micro Theory I & II - I only took 150 @ Kings with Kapil - he was a young cool prof - always gave us "practice questions", from which a descent number ended up being on the exam. For this course refresh your math skills as you'll be needing them quite a bit. It can be hard at times.

152/153 - Macro Theory I & II - Again, I only took 152 with Middleton - he is a cool prof, jokes around a lot but knows to be a b!tch on his exams. The course it self is mostly theory compared to Micro. No major calculations here.

Over all, most people say that micro is harder, but then there is a good number that say otherwise as well.

154 - Money is another good course with J.D. Han .....

Over all, for the courses you are taking, there are no group presentations/projects so you don't need to worry about that.

Parking is UWO's largest source of income!

The parking beside Huron College is $4. That's your cheapest option! Parking by Saugeen is free after 4 (at least it was for the past few years).

If you're really hard up for parking, you could try to follow someone into the green lot at the stadium. That lot should be coin/pass parking, so if you get in without getting caught, it'd be difficult for them to prove that you didn't pay with coins.

Not that I advocate doing this. :)

Has anyone checked out the mens/women's Hollister/Roxy, etc. sale in the UCC (near Williams)? They're selling women's Hollister hoodie sweatshirts (end of season stock) for 2 for $60 or 1 for $35. Roxy zip-up hoodies are 2 for $70or 1 for $40. Taxes are all included. There's some men's stuff but I didn't really get a good look at it. Everything is cash only. I bought 2 Hollister sweatshirts a few days ago. Can't beat that price but I would go as soon possible b/c there weren't many sizes left. The guy said tomorrow would be their last day.

Yikes, I found out a couple days back. Looks like undergrads get the butt end of the deal when it comes to parking.

(I tried parking at the Mac's, but they eventually caught on after 2 nights and kicked me out)

dont park there (Mac's/PizzaHut) you'll get towed. I work at the pizza hut and if you're seen parking there and leaving the plaza mgmnt will have you towed....just to give a fair warning.

Chances are you would have to join a Campus Rec program to play in the UCC; at the very least you'd have to book the court in advance. However, there are a couple courts located behind Saugeen that you might be able to use without having to deal with any administrative BS.

I have to agree with the complaints about the parking pass fees. I'm not sure what horrors you face this year, but last year they upped the rates by like $70 while significantly reducing the # of available spaces, which of course, they then happily oversold by a very large margin. They even made the Saugeen / Maitland lot staff only without informing anyone and then proceeded to fine the living hell out of students for much of September. *sigh* I still LOL about Aldhouse College being promoted as an Undergrad lot. They might as well list Masonville Mall while they're at it.

Just don't ever register your car with UWO or pay a parking ticket. As soon as they do that they will **** you over.

If you get a ticket huck it out. It is useless, they won't know who you are.

Can someone help me out. Applying for western and I'm a little lost. I want to go into commerce. So I chose organizational and management and for the major interest, I chose finance and management. I also chose the Ivey option. Did I choose correctly? I also heard that it is very hard to get into Business first year.

Should I choose an arts philosophy course as my second option and transfer over 2nd year? Can it be any course? Any other better routes to take because I think I would need a pretty high mark in order to be accepted in 2nd year. What is an easier way?

Finally, courses.

I am taking in grade 12:

Calc 12
Math 12
Bio 12
Physics 12
English 12

Is that all I need? I have a grade 11 social studies and Spanish 11. Does that satisfy evertyhing? I just find the western site incredibly hard to navigate.

I think you are confusing yourself too much.

If by "picked the Ivey option" you meant applied for AEO, then I'd say you could get in with something like >85% + extra curriculars. Otherwise if you just wanted to do BMOS at Western, it's easy as pie.

As for high school requisites, your school should've provided you with a bunch of stuff on that already. Ask your guidance counsellor if you can't figure it out from the UWO site.

Dude you need 6 Grade 12 U/M credits to apply to any university.

As for the MOS program, I'd heard the cut-off last year was 85%, I myself got in with a 87, but only got my offer 2 weeks before the deadline.

Btw, I didn't apply for AEO, but what Fabulaz said about the admission average should be about right. Maybe more than 85% though, it'll be closer to 90 than 85.

I've had: Everything at the UCC food court including Williams
Everything at Sommerville Hall (Lucy's)

- Have your average at 80ish +
- Have plenty of volunteer work ...

That should sum it up .. :)

At the end of the day, it all varies ... I've seen people get in with a 77% avg, and then on the other hand, I've seen those with pretty much no volunteer experience. If you have any entrepreneurial experience prior, thats a big BONUS.

The fourth year courses seem interesting and I like the variety you can choose from. However, when I was looking at the course calendar, it said that not all courses listed will be running. Did you ever run into a situation where the course you wanted to take isn't running that year?

Out of grade 12, you just apply for general science at western, then when you select courses near the end of first year, you apply for courses that will set you up for a medical science module. I think I had about 80 average after first year, and I got into med sci. Ended up in Ivey though, cuz being a doctor is too competitive.

You don't need pre-ivey necessarily, it helps if you're sure you can keep the 80 average, then you are pretty much guaranteed a spot.
I didn't have it, and applied from 2nd year, and got in with an 80 on the dot average. You have to have incredible extracurriculars with low marks though, so I just lied about the 50 clubs or so I had nothing to do with hahaha!

Lol...I'm not really sure what I miss about it, perhaps it's just that I live there, or maybe it's just that I'll greatly miss my friends from and outside of school that will still be in Toronto. I'm not exactly the party type, but I hear that even without partying, at Western I can still get to know some cool people.

1hr 45mins from most places in GTA, and 2hrs from Toronto itself? When I had to get my dad to drive me to London to drop off my res deposit on time ( ), we took the 407, and then switched onto the 401, went on the 401 as long as we could before we had to switch onto London city roads; we took one 10min rest stop only, and it took us like 2hours. We were travelling at around 110-120km/h on highways, plus the traffic was light and clear. I'd say 1:45 is if you're travelling faster than 110-120km/h, absolutely no slow sections, and no rest stops IMHO.

My gf is in Brampton (sauga rd/bovaird) and it takes me 1h20m normal drive (up to 120kmh). IMO, you should add another 30-45mins for Markham, depending on the traffic.

I'm bumping this thread to ask if anyone knows of any 24 hour places to study. I'm living in Delaware Hall so on campus would be preferable, or just off campus would be second best....

The reason I ask is it gets real hard to study on some weekends, when everyone else is partying and you really don't feel like it.

Intro to poli sci is a rather dry course.

If poli-sci is not your thing, I would not take this course. Then again, I had a rather 'hardcore' poli-sci teacher, so my experience with the course was not great, compared to few of my friends who had a "better" teacher and enjoyed the course.

I had a few other questions in general about university that I dont quite understand as of yet though:

1 - How does the SAO work? I know that you have the option to go to the university or do it online, but is it possible to choose your courses before you come? I googled "UWO timetable" and it gave me specific courses, their times, their profs and everything. So will it be possible to create my own timetable with the appropriate times before the SAO meeting? That way, I can get my preferred times and profs if i do it ASAP.

2 - I plan to live on the MIT floor in Perth; It's pretty awesome that the MIT floor will be in Perth next year, cuz Perth was originally one of my top choices. I realize its the hardest to get into though. Have you lived/ kno anyone who lives on the faculty floors? I wanna know what its like and how its different from a normal floor.

3 - Last one, in terms of the whole 0.5/1.0 credit, im not sure how this works. I know that 0.5 credits is only something you take half a year, whereas the 1.0 is the full year. Since my three core MIT courses are half year each, how do we know which half it falls under? Again, can we choose this before our SAO meeting?

Yea, I suggest doing it online. the SAO is just a tour of campus and getting your student card ahead of time I believe.

not the hardest to get into since MIT isnt the biggest faculty on campus, hence not alot of competition. I was on scholar elective floor at alumni house 5 years ago, but I can imagine it will be similar. Floors are run by upper year students and they will typically hold academia based "social" events. The only advantage of a faculty floor is 1) someone will be certain to wake u up on time for class since you'll all have common first year courses. 2) study group.

[/quote]

if the course number ends in 'a' (e.g. MIT 1100a) then it is held in first term. if the course number ends in 'b' (e.g. MIT 1100b) then it is second term course. If there is no alpha designation, then it is a full year course. F/G designation courses are half essay courses respectively first and second term.

1. SAO is a great introduction to the campus and it's nice to have someone to help you choose your courses. With first class sizes as large as they are, with an early SAO date, you'll have no problems getting the times you want. Only a few keeners book on the first day and it's a nice introduction to the school. I'd go.

2. Where did you get the idea that Perth is the hardest to get into? Regardless, being on a faculty floor is nice, you're able to relate classwise to a lot of people on your floor and share notes etc. I applied for the Science floor in med-syd. Looking back though, I was glad I didn't get it. Meeting a broad range of people with completely different outlooks on school is a nice thing about a floor and it's likely that you'll find people in your faculty and rez during faculty day (orientation week) anyways.

3. These are great questions to ask during your SAO and there's no way you won't be able to get into your core classes (also, there's probably not very many sections of each as these are huge classes). For the record though, like knightmare said if a course ends in A it's first semester, B is second semester. F is first semester essay course and G is second semester essay course.

Hope that helps!

Hey guys,

I'll be attending Western this fall for biological and medical science :cheesygri I just had a few questions that I thought someone might be able to answer...

1) What are the "bird courses" that I can get in first year to keep my gpa high?

2) how can I maximize my chance of getting a room at Elgins/Essex or Perth, considering that I am not applying with a friend? (I really don't want to end up at Maitland)

3)Does anyone know what percentage of med sci students make it to med school? I think on the campus day some prof said about 33%, but that seems too high!

4) finally, how practical is a med sci degree alone, what can you do with it?

Feel free to add any tips or advise, thanks ;)

1) No such thing in first year as you won't have room for anything but 1 full year elective. Most people take Psych 020 (I think the code is now 1020). Pretty easy but not a "bird" by classical definition.

2) No way to maximize chances at all and Saugeen-Maitland is often people's last choice. The key is to go in with a positive attitude. Oh, also, I find suite styles far more detached and dead.

3) The percentage is much lower. The key is to develop personal experiences during university. Your first question (bird courses to get a good gpa) is a question a lot of people have but instead of focusing only on GPA, be sure to get involved and do a lot of different things you love. Only then will you have the perspective needed for something like medicine.

4) There is nothing you can do with a med sci degree alone. You will need to do a masters or something else. If you want a degree that you can have work on its on, Eng or Kinesiology would be better.

Oh, and how do I know? I graduated with my Med Sci degree last April lol. Hoping for more school soon though :).

Also, is Health science more practical than medical science?

Thanks for your advise. So did you like the program, and how much work did you have to put in to get good marks?

I liked the program yes, but unfortunately, 90% of people in it want to be doctors and a lot of people don't end up doing it. If you don't have the passion (and it's hard to know until you get to uni), you won't be able to do anything with just the BMSc. Don't think it's any better than a BSc because it isn't. That being said, Health Science is much more policy based whereas Med Sci is more science based. I liked science a lot more. Health Sci would be better for a career in public health etc. Nursing and Kin would be good for careers right away. If you're unsure, you can always switch once you get to uni!

As for how much work to put in, what I like about Western is that it's more fair than a school like UofT. If you put a reasonable amount of work in, you CAN do well (with UofT I feel like sometimes, no matter what you do, you wont). Also there are a lot of safeguards. Getting help from your RA, your floor and faculty sophs (you'll find out what they are when you get to UWO), and your profs (during office hours, which they all have) can really help give you an advantage.

A lot of people wait until after midterms to get on track, try to avoid that mistake but remember, university is as much about learning about yourself as it is learning about science. Live a little and don't, whatever you do, think getting Saugeen is a problem.

Personally, Med-Syd is by far the best residence for a balance of spirit and academics but each rez is what you put into it.

Honors Specialization Physiology, and yourself?

Also, for hi-everyone, Kin gives you more options after just a bachelor's but that being said, I feel that Med Sci is the best program in the province for a "pre-med" type program. People in health sci have to take a lot of bs courses and kin have to do sports courses, etc. Med Sci, you're doing things that are mostly relevant to medicine. (Keep in mind, if you don't get into medicine, a Masters or doing a 2nd degree is a must. There are also other options that are easier than meds like Law/Pharmacy).

I remember friends having a book on prefixes/suffixes for first year health sci. What a joke.

Also, Health Sci puts you at a disadvantage as you wont have room for Physics in first year which means you have to put it into 2nd year which gives you less room for electives. Again, only speaking from a pre-med standpoint.

And I also agree, BMSc is best program in province for pre-med. everything is med school oriented. But again, if you dont/cant get into med school, then you are stuck with research for grad school. Most knowledge are not applicable else where. Whereas I feel Health sci would be a good general and broad overview of the allied/rehab health care system. If med sch is your only goal, then go for med-sci and test your competency and build your foundational knowledge for med-sch

BMSc is best program in province for pre-med. everything is med school oriented.

This is non-sense. If someone has a solid GPA in music or fine arts or philosophy, all other things being equal, they have the advantage over any so-called "pre-med" student with slightly lower grades. Bottom line, do what you like and what you are good at.

But again, if you dont/cant get into med school, then you are stuck with research for grad school. Most knowledge are not applicable else where.

The skills one learns in science are valuable to any industry, you just have to make an real effort to look beyond grad research instead of blindly following your classmates to a bleak future of pipetting, poverty and nights/weekends/holidays looking after cell cultures. Furthermore, the knowledge you learn in *most* undergraduate programs is not applicable elsewhere.

non-sense? If someone has a solid GPA in music or fine arts, it means nothing when you have to start preparing for the MCATs. You have a huge advantage when the courses you take in MedSCi are applicable to what you want to do in Med school.

As for "valuable to any industry", with university, it's really not a matter of what you learn but learning about yourself as a person. I feel that any program at Western prepares people well for careers in the field but without an Engineering degree or Kin degree or Nursing degree, grad school is truly the only option.

congratz. i wasnt in traditional residence and would strongly recommend suite style. Much more comfortable + privacy + study environment + allow cooking food whenever you want/need! (rez's cafe closes pretty early)

Traditional residence is more of the "university experience". It's a bit harder to study, but that's what libraries are for. You get to meet a lot more people, you constantly are interacting and it's a much more positive environment. Suite styles, especially Alumni House, leave a lot to be desired with regards to the social atmosphere. The cafs are closed on weekends too. If you like cooking and want some more privacy and detachment then I suppose that suite style might work for you.

Also, an 85% isn't that hard to get. You'd be surprised. If you work hard, it's possible. My average actually went up in first year (compared to high school grade 12), so don't listen to what people say about marks dropping. Your marks will drop if you expect professors to baby you like your high school teachers. Work hard and you WILL succeed.

My average in grade 12 was 86 and my average in first year was 87. Honestly, don't be intimidated. Some people from rural private schools came into Western with a 95% average and scholarships galore and we'd be in study groups and they'd have no clue about anything. They'd drop to 60s in Chemistry where I found it to be mostly review.

Work hard, seek help when you need it (don't be afraid of asking your profs for help and don't wait until it's too late) and you'll succeed. Simple. Some people coast through high school, some work hard, if you try to coast at any university, you'll get burned.

Seriously, it should never be an issue of which is easier. Guelph and Western are tremendously different learning environments. You need to get out of that GPA-is-everything mentality. It will lead to your downfall as it has so many others.

They have 2 first year chem course. Since you didnt take the gr12 one, you'll be able to take the "easier" one, which teaches in a slower pace.

The overall whole course is a review of gr11+12 material. So you'll do fine

There should be adequate introduction to topics but be sure to stay on top of that course if you're unsure about it. From what I understand from talking to Felix (prof of Chem) they merged the two chem classes into 1 so there isn't that option that bestknightmate talked about anymore.

There should be adequate introduction to topics but be sure to stay on top of that course if you're unsure about it. From what I understand from talking to Felix (prof of Chem) they merged the two chem classes into 1 so there isn't that option that bestknightmate talked about anymore.

 Hopefully i can keep up! Although it wouldve been nice to have that option!

oh man, was first year med sci ever rough....

wait...it wasn't. TBH i went to 40% of classes and still did well, you have to know yourself(how you study/learn, and wat you need to do in tests/exams, KEY!!!) and LISTEN in lectures, you'll find all these people typing like crazy, and not even listening to what the profs are saying. then later when they read over notes (this example is basically for cal/bio) they don't know wtf they're reading, while if you listened and understood, u jus remind ur self. oh and that new chem course, yea, they totally ****ed it up with us, glad we were the dummies, lets jus say that the profs disabled the discussion boards on WebCT for some unkind words, TWICE, coincidently around tests that resembled nothing of the workbook, and to whoever was askin about SAO, go, believe me you meet a lot of ppl and you have people you know before u even go there, mostly girls, which is good, trust ;).

I think all about-to-be first year students, please read this newspaper article
http://www.thestar.com/article/614219

and I quote "Wikipedia generation is lazy and unprepared for university's rigours, survey of faculty says"

In terms of the closing of the forum on WebCT, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to view some of the posts, for 3 years in a row. The maturity of the students changed so much. They start to blame prof for giving impossible exams and started stalking the prof. So I think the prof had good reasons to close it down.

believe me, if anyone learned ANY independent study, its me. I went from 0 studying in high school, to some studying in university, and I'll admit, if I reviewed material for bio before exams, my average would hit 90. But I never got to read the webboard, i posted once concerning a question on the test, next day, its closed, and I dind't get that question answered. I didn't know they stalked them, thats kind of pushing it, but the students had a point about the test and workbook, but the tests were ranging from easy to mediocre.

well i mean writing stuff down to, but not to the point where ur just hearing and writing/typing. I dunno, i found the chem to be pretty do-able tbh, but I messed up some EASY questions on tests, but a lot of ppl had no idea wat was going on. If I recall correctly, when you select your courses online or during your SAO day the proffessor is listed under the course code.

For Online Enrollment:

When you login to https://student.uwo.ca, go to Enrollment: Add Classes, and select what course you wish to add. Once you have done that, a list of all available lecture hours will pop up along side the instructors name.

Prior to course enrollment, you should receive a book with a timetable of all the classes being offered, the times at which they're run, and the profs that will teach them (though sometimes the profs are still TBD so not all the classes will have a prof listed, but most will).

I believe it arrives in June..

I think Western has just as much (not much more or less) than any other school. It only got the reputation as "party school" in the 60s because one of the new residence didn't have any rules, but obviously this all changed in the 70s.

I assume your question is to ask how many Blacks are at Western? I was in the medical science program at Western and, culturally speaking (correct me if I am wrong), it might not be a popular program in Black culture. So in terms of exposure to Black classmates, I saw less than 20 in the past four years I've been in Western.

not envied at all. Entrance requirements are low, with respect to what science/health students need to endure and maintain.
Also, with the planned addition of a new Ivey Building, they plan on expanding their spots by a lot within the next few years; which also means lower competition as well.

It's an HBA not a full out MBA. Some students already get there undergrad and then get a HBA. An engineer and a nurse is is only 4 years to become a profession. And your definition of profession, may differ than mine. A profession is somebody who is affliated with a professional designation and a professional body. I don't think getting a M.Sc. qualifies you with those two criteria.

HBA is quite sad. It use to be a stamp of undergrad excellence. Ever since Dean Carol took over it is a cash cow. I believe they plan to have 8 sections. Just to put that into perspective Ivey is cranking out more Ivey HBA grads than Western Engineers or BMOS students. The elitism has long past. You might still have the best of the best going consulting and banking but the avg. Ivey of now doesn't compete to the avg. Ivey of yesteryear.

Edit: I didn't find UWO snobby at all. But I was an engineer so I partied 24/7 with engineers. Just be yourself, get involved and you will find people like you. It was the best 4 years of my life and not a day goes by that I don't miss it. It was a blast, try not to party too hard. You don't want to get kicked out. But remember there is learning in and outside of the classroom too.

e.g. 1100a, 1200b

F and G mean the same thing as A and B (i.e. F is first term, G is second).
HOwever, they denote essay courses (which are normally marked with an E when they are full year courses).

So something like Soc 2500E would suggest a full year essay course.

Registration for 4th years start on the 16th apparently. I am assuming that the 3rd years start their registration the following week, and then second years, etc.

Hi,

I'm a Biomed student going into second year. Unfortunately I had a little trouble in Calculus and Chemistry and hence didn't have the average to get accepted into my intended module. I hope to reapply (and get in) in third year. However I'm wondering what classes I would be selecting for second year. The list of year 2 foundation courses is below, but I'm wondering what the typical second year is in this situation. I know i retake the courses I need to upgrade my marks in (Calc 1000, Calc 1301, and Chem 1050)...but which foundation courses?

Year 2 foundation courses: Biochemistry 2280A; Biology 2581B; Biology 2382B; Biology 2290F/G; Chemistry 2213A/B; Chemistry 2223B; Biology 2244A/B or Statistical Science 2122A/B; or approved alternatives in the module

I'm not a Bio student but I have a number of friends and housemates that took those classes. If BIo2244 is the "Bio Stats" that I'm thinking of then I heard that it's generally easier than Stats 2122. I think more of my friends took Stats2122 than the Bio one though so I'm not sure how reliable that opinion is.

You can look up the instructors on the Instructor and Course Evaluation site and see how many people filled out those reports expecting to get an A grade.

I don't quite understand your question; those are the fundamental courses that all med sci student gotta take, so take all of them.

and you really should have taken those cal/chem courses in the summer; if you take it in your 2nd year, you will not have enough credits to fully finish the module. Since you have 3.5 credits as foundation courses, and if you mean to retake Calc and Chem, thats is another 2.0 credits. So you will need to take 5.5 credits. Which means you will need to apply to the registrar to let you overload your course. But with your marks; they will probably not approve since they can foresee you to have trouble as well.

Also, another problem you'll run into is that; I assume since you didnt get into the med sci module you wanted, you are now bumped back into regular BSc program; so you will not have priority to take a lot of biomed classes. they may run out of spot.

2nd year courses are much harder than first year (which was all review of gr12 material)

good luck in 2nd year. and find some backup plan; just in case.

I did mean compsci 026a
Aced it without going to class, 98%
its all about knowing mathematical and logical operations; you got to be able to mental-visually trace each step in your head and be able to hold more than 2 numbers in your head.

I am not a math major nor a comp sci major; took this in my 4th year of Med sci program; was considered a good break from my other courses.

Gahh.... well good on you. That course seriously killed me. I was literally the last one out of the lab each week. Keep in mind... I hate numbers, math, blah blah. I'm in MIT... ha.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to take the classes in the summer but didn't find a place to live until the last minute, and so it was sort of out of the question.

My original question was as to which fundamental course to take...but i now see you take all of them.

So what are my options now? If I don't get the course load approved by the registrar that is. I could take them next summer but then the only way i get into a module is if they don't fill all the spots. Do I have any other options?

With regards to that, I'm in med sci and I was told from a friend (might be misinformed) that not all of them were necessary assuming the module has alternative courses?

i.e. 2290F/G is "fundamental" but in the module, it requires a 1.0 credit where alternatives such as 2274A & 2284B could be taken instead to fulfill the 1.0 requirement.

So we must have 2290F/G?

EDIT: Nvm....my program doesn't require 2290 lol.

Some of those fundamental courses also have mark prerequist from first year. so make sure you have at least 70% - 75% in each of first year course. All 2nd year class, i suppose, are pretty huge, so you probably wont run out of luck yet. Some courses, such as biochem 280, can be taken in summer through distance studies from another university. I remember a friend that did so, but forgot which university she took it from.

I just had a simple question: I'm going to first year biomed sci. Should I wait for SAO (which is on the 26th for me) to pick my courses or should I start registering now?

And as I was reading it seems like some people found the health sci course easy. Can biomed students take that course as well? And what do you learn mostly in the course?

It's up to you whether you want to wait till SAO or to do it yourself now. There is time allocated on SAO where you can sit down with a prof who will guide you through your course selection and give you advice. Afterwards, a student volunteer will help you build your timetable.

If you already know what you want to take and are confident in using the online enrollment system (it really isn't that hard) then do it yourself. Getting it done earlier may guarantee your chances of getting into the classes/times that you want.

As for your second question, if it does not say that the course is limited specifically to Health Sci students then yeah, it's open to everyone.

You can get the course outline there. Hope that helps.
I can't tell you about the course itself as I've never taken it. You can look up the prof on ratemyprofs though.. though be careful; those ratings should be taken with a grain of salt.

you must be registered with faculty of health sci to do their anatomy course, which is available in first year..

if you were to take the anatomy from med sci, it is a 3rd year course.

Psych1000 is a fair bit of reading because in recent years they've started to test the material in the textbook a bit more, so attending lectures alone is not enough to get you a good mark in the class.

If psychology interests you though, it is a good class. Don't expect it to be a bird course. And try to take it with Dr. Mike.

If Jap1050 is the regular first-year Jap (not the "intensive" one) then it's pretty easy. I put in a regular amount of effort and walked out with a 90.

I heard Astro2022 is easy but have never taken it before. I've taken the other Astro (Search for Life in the Universe) and that was maybe the most boring class I've ever taken. The midterm was easy but they really beefed up the final because I think the profs were getting pissed that everyone started skipping class.

Another easy class is Bio1225 "Biology for Everyday Life" or something like that. It's for non-science students specifically. If they still offer it, it should be an online course. Assuming you have some experience with Bio in high school it'll be a breeze. I took bio up to grade 12 and a lot of it was just review again.

You can only do double degrees...
For people entering the HBA1, the Econ and HBA degree has just been approved

Other double degrees include Law, MIT and Engineering off my head
During the 4th year, you are allowed to take ONE regular Western course that is 200 +level. However, you need permission for some courses

Recruiting this year remains the same roughly but the jobs available has decreased. EX: A company would hires 2 instead of 4

With that said, most of us are employed within my network.

I had a question regarding elective courses for a biomed sci first year student:

I am considering: Health sci, philosophy, psychology, and geography as electives.

Has anyone taken anyone of those courses before? I read some of the course descriptions in the course calendar but they don't provide enough info on which i can base my decision. Any advice is highly appreciated, keeping in mind that getting high marks is the course in the number one priority.

p.s. I know some of those course might have been discussed before, but I just needed to get even more info. Thanks ;)

Two words: screw psych.
Although many people enjoyed it, I think "Psych with Mike" is overrated, and it was hard for me to get a good mark. But again, maybe thats just me.

I really think it's just you. I know many people that got 80+ in that class. All you have to do is get the past exams and actually do assigned readings.

To hi-everyone: If you're going to take psych, definitely look for the section with Dr. Mike Atkinson. He's by far the best first year psych prof.

but I did all the assigned readings before class, and re-read them again before each exam. I actually did study really hard for that class and it was my worse mark the whole year.

most students just cant adapt to first year courses, thats probably why you did bad.

especially when Mike pamper his students by having the TA types the notes for them and then post them online. Great way to encourage kids to go to class.
and having 3 hr class, ends in 2; so you really need to catch up with the material or else you lose 1 hr of what you paid in tuition

ok and what about "Health Science 1000" and "Introduction to Philosophy 1300E"?

Has anyone taken any of those courses before? They all kind of sound good to me: Health sci, it's good because i am considering careers in health care so it would provide some background info about health care system. Philosophy just sounds interesting, I like arguing about different things like presence of god or freedom etc... And psychology sounds good too because I am interested in learning about how our mind works and so on and also people recommended it with prof Mike.

lol...I found Psych quite difficult and I'm a science student. Lowest mark (above 80 but was much lower than what I expected). The hard part I found was the random questions from the textbook. i.e. The major age of which so-and-so occurs is:

a)4-7 b)5-9 etc. something along those lines. That question was 2 short sentences in the textbook. FFS...there were quite a few questions on each exam also pulled from the textbook and it was content that didn't seem THAT important to know (with the exception of the first midterm which was relatively easy). Way to tell the class that no memorization is needed when only understanding will do.

The project was easy, the notes the TAs post are crap as it tends to be missing bits of major points or just pure copies of the slide with no explanations (which is necessary imo so it was a lot easier just heading to class and summarizing what was necessary). And classes lasted from 1:45-2:45, so it was only an hour give or take 5-10 minutes.

Yeah I agree. He kept saying "don't memorize" blah blah, but so many questions had to do with specific details... eh. Oh well, that class is over with.

I agree though. The project was definitely the easiest. 10/10.. easy marks and that helped boost my mark a bit ... LOL.

As for Health Sci 1000, my roomie took it this year and she said it was really easy. She said it was kinda dumb though, in the sense that it was mainly logical and it was pretty boring.

i just got my residence handbook..

they seem to emphasize the importance of bringing the cds for your computer's os and all its software. is this really necessary? i understand maybe the os cd, but why microsoft office and etc?

also, they make the punishments for drinking underage seem really severe. theyre not really that strict in real life right? maybe just o-week?

edit: one other thing-i have long distance cell phone minutes and want to keep my 416 number. if im in london and somebody in london calls me, will they get charged long distance? just hoping maybe someone here knows because all the rogers reps keep giving me different answers lol.

Ya...I don't really take the handbook very seriously (neither did anyone else). I'd ignore the "bring your discs" part.

lol...I doubt they're strict considering almost everyone had a stash in their room.
Lots of ID cards available for purchase if you need one although I'm not adovcating such illegal acts(for bars and such).

The person who calls you will get charged long distance and you won't. But if you call them, you don't get charged because it's "local" to you since you're there. You don't even need long distance unless you're calling a non-London number while in London.
Hence, I changed my number to 519 to save people the trouble. I only text those who have a 416/out of area number. Works well but I ended up getting another cell with my original 416 number for the summer months.

Is that the same as Japanese 030?
I took that course in 2nd year at Huron, had loads of fun but was my lowest mark ever (68%? I think..)
Most people in my class had 60s, 70s with a few 80s and the odd 90

So I would recommend you taking it but not as a birdie course

FYI: I'm a 4th year in the HBA program now

Who was your instructor?

There were a number of Koreans in my class and some Chinese as well. The Koreans had an advantage because their language's sentence structure and grammar is similar to the Japanese. The Chinese had a slight advantage also because of their familiarity with the kanji.

Still though, even the people with no familiarity with either language did not do so poorly. Most people scored around 80 with a few in the low 70s and 90s.

The hard part I found was the random questions from the textbook. i.e. The major age of which so-and-so occurs is:

a)4-7 b)5-9 etc. something along those lines. That question was 2 short sentences in the textbook. Lol developmental psych. Yeah I hated that section for the same reason. It's hard to remember all that stuff especially because there are a number of different models which say similar things, e.g. Piaget's and those other guys.

Dr Mike is a great instructor but I suppose he does not give the best advice when it comes to exams. He doesn't write all of the questions on the exam after all. Memorization of definitions, models, theories, etc. is necessary to do well. I think, in recent years, they've amped up the difficulty on the psych exams so that it's not viewed as a "bird course."

Not strict at all!!!
It really, in the end, depends on your RA, but most of them are chill and don't care. During Oweek, they're definitely more strict if they SEE you holding a drink in the hall, but it's all good if you're drinking with friends in a room.

All the 1st year chem profs are good (I believe it's Lee/Calvin this year only but Workentin is good as well if he still teaches 1050) and as for calc, it depends on what course and varies depending on the section you're in.
Bryan, he's good but very annoying as he's very overconfident of his own abilities and an ego that can't be matched by anyone in the class. I had him for 1000 and 1501(brutal, get 1301 as the 1501 questions were definitely much harder and time consuming to do).

depends on how desperate you want to read the books. They generally arent required if you go to lecture

Generally, textbooks cost around $150/course. If you are taking a lot of half-courses then you'll need more books. But since you're in first year you shouldn't have too many half courses so it won't be too bad.

Social life really depends what you want to do. If you hit up a bar or club that's the most expensive:

-$5 cover
-$10-$40 in drinks, depending on how heavy of a drinker you are and what you like to drink
-$5 in cab fare, assuming there are others you split it with
-Toss in any money that you may spend on predrink

Dinner and movie costs around $30 ($20 for dinner, $10 for movie) assuming you get out in time to take the bus back, otherwise toss in cab fare.

But if you are financially concerned about how much money you will be spending on entertainment already, then the best solution would be to not go out often to begin with.

Question: If you need to complete a set of courses by your second year in order to stay in your program, could it be taken at the summer of that second year, or it has to be taken during the fall/winter terms?

I'm not aware of a city bus that takes that route. But you can take the stairs at the side of alumni hall and get to the health sciences building. It's like a 2 minute walk.

Thanks dude you're always so helpful :cheesygri ... I'm assuming classes are there for me since I saw a banner for the OT program in there. I just found a place to live yesterday in the Old North. Fortunately, not Broughdale as I heard its really bad there. I'm in the neighbourhood beside that one. Not the best price it was like $395 without utilities and furnishing. But the people there seemed pretty clean. It's about a 5 min walk to alumni hall, hence I was curious if theres a bus =D ... I thought you applied to Glenmore? I was 120 or something on the waiting list for the 1-bedroom, and I just received an email asking if I still want it. I already found housing though on Coombs. "Near West" is probably the best location for PT/OT students.

Students at Western already find out in March whether they were accepted into rez.

Incoming first-year students find out sometime during the summer.

The best place to find engineers is at 2am on a Tuesday night in the UES. Always filled with pleasantly drunk engineers. Actually during my frosh week they had 3 mini-racers in the UES, you know those little big wheel bikes that 10 year olds ride? Anyways, we had a blast racing around the UES...had a course all set up and everything...some of those corners man, pretty tricky stuff to maneuver around the computers and fooseball table! We recorded our times on the board, the winner got to wear the lone safety cone on his head back to ESSEX; we came back the next day and I won :D

Yes, I checked those out before I registered in a course to see how many ppl expected an A. Also check out the course syllabus to see if the exams are multiple choice or if there's essays/presentations (which tend to be harder).

1) Who cares how many people EXPECTED an A? What I want to know is how many people GOT an A!

2) Not for everyone. I do way better with essays and presentations, and I usually do poorly with multiple choice.

1) They don't give out how many of the class got an A, so EXPECTING an A is the best indicator you can expect.

2) Essays/presentations are definitely way harder to get 100% on. Multiple choice you can easily ace if you work hard enough.

Those Instructor/Course Evaluations are pretty accurate for the most part. Generally speaking, most people indicate that they expect an A because based on their performance so far, they are already getting A's. And then you can also see what kinds of people take the class (e.g. whether it's a required course for most people or if it's optional, and how much people in the class actually attended lectures).

If you see a bunch of people taking the course because it's optional, a large # expecting A's, and a large percentage of the class with low attendance, that's a good indicator of a bird course.

Those evaluations also tell you a bit about how good the instructor is. It's not the best cause every instructor scores around 4-6 points, but generally you will find that the ones that receive lower scores receive them for a good reason.

Also, as someone else suggested, you can look at the syllabus to see the course format. Essays are more work than M/C tests generally, but depending on the prof essays might be easier sometimes.

RateMyProf is good as well if you want to get some actual comments on the prof/course itself, but I would not trust it too much as there's sometimes not enough feedback on there for an accurate representation of the prof or course. Like there was one class I was considering taking and maybe 3 reviews of that class and they were all terrible ones, so I was really hesitant. I went with it anyways for lack of a better choice and I found that prof to be a really great guy. So that's the thing, the people that had a negative experience will post to complain about it, while those that who did alright don't.

On my statement, "Total Anticipated Aid" shows up as $0.

If you are getting an Admission Scholarship (i.e. your average is above 85%), that will be applied to your account sometime during the schoolyear. You still need to pay the full amount that they are asking for your first installment.

Have you applied for a bursary? If you have been granted a bursary, IIRC you'll get it sometime in October.

Any admission scholarship, bursary, and Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship (the OSAP scholarship) will be applied to your tuition account AFTER the beginning of the school year, meaning you still need to pay the minimum payment due as shown on your statement of account. Therefore, these scholarships/bursaries will be applied against the second installment of tuition. If your total amount of financial aid is greater your second installment, a refund cheque will be issued for the excess. I believe this happens in late Oct or November.

As far as I know Western's biological/medical science program is a very solid program and definitely superior to Brock and York. The campus is the second most beautiful campus in Canada (that's what I've heard on a Utours video, don't quote me on this.) The only course that will mark adjustments to the final mark was chemistry and they tell you. i.e. if class average was too high, they might subtract 5% from everyone.

However, lol, due to one of the exams having an average in the low to mid 50s, the chemistry department decided to give extra marks for partial correct answers in MC resulting in mark boosts of up to 25%!!!! It brought the average up to a high 50. So I seriously doubt they needed to adjust marks down at the end of the year.

don't get meal plan. You'll be too lazy to travel to essex or perth hall for food.you'll also probably end up going out a lot more in the london area in 2nd year. Just add like 100 bucks on your card once in awhile to spend on timmy's or something lol. They already did it this year. The thing is, they only do it for quizzes and midterms. The final exam however was Scantron. To be honest, those scratch cards were annoying as you would continually doubt yourself on the more difficult questions where 0.5 of a mark matters quite a bit.

I recall several mishaps (even during an exam where people scratched the right answer but there was no "star" there...so they ended up scratching all the boxes of the question. Turns out it was an error so anyone who got that version of the exam got a free mark) resulting from accidentally scratching like 7 consecutive boxes in a row. No sympathy from the prof lol.

So overall, those cards IMO were garbage. Either you get it right or not with the Scantrons is better.

I have to agree with Legit, during the tests and midterms the scratch cards were a pain in the ass. However overall you do end up getting part marks for things you would usually not get marks for...hence increasing your mark slightly.

don't get meal plan. You'll be too lazy to travel to essex or perth hall for food.you'll also probably end up going out a lot more in the london area in 2nd year. Just add like 100 bucks on your card once in awhile to spend on timmy's or something lol. Theres a bunch of food places near oxford and wharncliffe (like 10 mins away) and it tastes better and the price is prolly ends up to be the same.

http://www.has.uwo.ca/hospitality/mealplan/students.htm#TaxExempt

The PST exempt plan is your best bet. Just top up $250 onto your account and you'll be able to save PST on your purchases on campus. Plus a 5% discount (this one is also available with the basic Flex plan). In other words, you'd be saving 13% as opposed to 5% if you just top up $100.

If you're in a suite-style the rooms are single gender (2 people to a washroom) but the floors are co-ed.

You should have applied for an all-girls floor. It's probably too late, but maybe you can contact housing and see what they can do for you.

Hopefully your mom won't freak out though, it's really not a big deal =/

Question for upper years: What do you do with your past years textbooks? I realize I can put them up for sale, but it's kind of a hassle. How does it work if you take them in to the used book store? Any other options/suggestions?

I'm not sure there is an all girls floor. I don't remember there being one in Delaware last year.

I'm a guy so I can't really relate but, I don't think it was that bad. There was many a occasion where we (ie guys on the floor) would walk around without pants to and from the shower...etc. But that's about as bad as it gets.

IIRC you bring in your books to the old book store and they sell it for you. When it sells, you'll get a cheque for whatever the asking price was. Lately they've been doing this thing where you get cash right on the spot. I'm not sure what the difference between that and the regular Bookstore Buyback is. I'm curious about this as well.

I normally just sell it back to the Textbook Buyback (at the regular Bookstore) if I can get a decent price for it. Anything above 50% of retail is good enough for me. NOt worth the trouble of selling it personally to another person, even though you could make a bit more money that way, but that's just me.

Facebook is a good way to try selling your textbooks. I've sold one through the Marketplace before. FOr whatever reason, the Bookstore wasn't buying it back (although the course didn't change editions or anything) so it went pretty easily.

Gl on your mom. You can run the usual, Mom you raised so you can trust me. Or this is an experience I need to go through, it is very safe we have RA's etc... You can also try to go for a non alcoholic floor or quiet floor and be like look mom, everybody here shares the same values. blah blah

But going to an all girls floor at Saugeen is going to be more of a party than a mixed co ed floor at Essex/Elgin. So their is optix you can play with.

Good for you. Living on rez and away from parental units grows you on so many levels. You learn responsibility, accountability, how to cook. Can't recommend the rez experience enough.

No not far enough apart sorry. My floor which I lived on was walled in on both sides. You still also have to get past the moving day scenario. You are going to have guys and girls wandering around your floor. You are SOL. Sorry ha ha. I think the best approach is to wait it out and hope that the all girl floors are all filled up. You could try calling and pretend if there is room.

As far as I know (because I am a res soph), all of the housing decisions have already been made. I am sure that you've recieved your residence package already telling you which res you are in. If your mom was to complain, the most she could do would be to get you a single room, instead of a double room, if she is worried about roomates bringing boys in. So it looks like you'll have a fun time in res anyways. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

yes, 2nd year is most difficult in your 4 years. you are forced to take advanced courses unwillingly. Whereas in 3rd and 4th, its all courses that you are interested in and are specialized in, hence relatively easier. However, 2nd year is also most crucial because it determines if you can remain in the med sci program. I believe the new cut off is around 85%. If you can survive 2nd year, its smooth sailing afterwards... my 2nd year avg was my lowest % year.

Hm.. I hope I don't have to pay a penalty. I'm planning to pay it all in one installment ($6500 or something) to avoid the extra $30 if we pay in two installments LOL so it would totally defeat the purpose if I get a penalty regardless...

I will call tomorrow. Ehh not too fond of the housing ladies though, and I don't exactly have the greatest record. I ended up having to pay $250 in room damages at the end of the year ugh.

Hi everyone. I have a few general questions. Some are a bit silly, but I figured I'd ask anyway. A few are about privacy and stuff. I'm an only child and have never lived with someone my own age before, so I'm kind of nervous, in that sense. I'm not going to Western yet, but applying in the fall. :) So, no course questions, because I haven't even applied yet, but those will probably come later as Western's my #1 choice.

1. In the suite/apartment style rooms, are there locks on bedroom doors? I know that the main entrance to the suite is locked. I'd hate to be changing and have someone walk in accidentally. :P I couldn't find an answer on the website, and was curious. Oh, and also, does the bathroom door lock as well?

2. In the traditional dorms, with the shared bathrooms, are the showers stalls, or is there just a curtain? I'm kind of shy, and witnessed a poor girl at my camp have an unfortunate encounter with a group of girls and a curtain a few weeks ago. :|

3. In which rooms are you allowed your own TV, if any?

4. I didn't get to read through all of the posts, but I noticed wireless internet was discussed. With the new internet sticks from Rogers/Bell, would I be better off getting one of those, or using Western's internet? What's your personal experience with the wireless on campus?

5. I'm not sure how it works, but if I selected the four suite style rooms as my top picks for residence, with the single traditional dorms following, and then double rooms after that, what are my chances of getting in a suite?

6. Should I purchase a printer, or are essays and such sent through email now? My current English teacher is huge on email, so I thought it may be a possibility.

Hmm. That's all I can really think of right now. I'll probably have more. :P Sorry if I sound a little paranoid - I'm just a pretty private person (looking to loosen up a bit, I guess, by staying in residence and all... but baby steps!) but if I'm uncomfortable with where I'm living, my school work reflects it. Thanks in advance for all of your feedback! It's very much appreciated.

Yuppers, but I always left my door unlocked when changing as I always hoped someone would walk in right when I was dropping my towel! Alas, it did not happen

2. In the traditional dorms, with the shared bathrooms, are the showers stalls, or is there just a curtain? I'm kind of shy, and witnessed a poor girl at my camp have an unfortunate encounter with a group of girls and a curtain a few weeks ago. :|

Hmmm, I don't know (I was in suite-style) but in any case grow some Cajones! I gotta share a single shower with an entire hockey team, who needs curtains :D

3. In which rooms are you allowed your own TV, if any?

Any room in suite-style but cable is only run to the common room; splitters are "illegal" and the janitor will write you up for using one. So just know the cleaning schedule and disconnect the splitter whenever your room is up.

4. I didn't get to read through all of the posts, but I noticed wireless internet was discussed. With the new internet sticks from Rogers/Bell, would I be better off getting one of those, or using Western's internet? What's your personal experience with the wireless on campus?

Wireless on campus is free...for in rez wireless is no dice with Western's service; you do, however, get access to dc++ which is a godsend and you will not want to pass it up. Don't get bell/rogers it's simply not worth it.

5. I'm not sure how it works, but if I selected the four suite style rooms as my top picks for residence, with the single traditional dorms following, and then double rooms after that, what are my chances of getting in a suite?
It's by lottery and most people select suites. Put it this way, you have a 1/3 chance of ending up in Saugeen.

6. Should I purchase a printer, or are essays and such sent through email now? My current English teacher is huge on email, so I thought it may be a possibility.

Get a cheap all in one scanner/printer/coffee maker for 70 bucks at futureshop. They work great!

I lived in a traditional style dorm first year and there are definitely curtains. The curtains kind of suck and don't really work that well, but they are definitely there.

5. I'm not sure how it works, but if I selected the four suite style rooms as my top picks for residence, with the single traditional dorms following, and then double rooms after that, what are my chances of getting in a suite?

Really depends how lucky you are. I had all suite-styles first like you said, and I still ended up getting traditional. You'll end up loving it either way though.

There is wireless everywhere on campus but AFAIK not in rezzes. If you're in rez you will have to use the wired RezNet system. It is great for DC++ as you'll be able to download a lot of stuff at wicked speeds (like movies, TV shows) but then RezNet has also been enforcing a usage limit so the usefulness of DC++ is limited. Also, RezNet has been known to be slow periodically and may give you trouble when you try to play games online or use certain kinds of online software. Going with Rogers/Bell may be more reliable and faster (with the exception of DC++/LAN activities), but will also be more expensive. You'll still get those annoying monthly limits with Rogers and Bell too. It really depends on what you need to do with your internet.

Don't they still do everything on the university hill? There's nothing stopping you from sitting on the other side of the fence across the sidewalk and watching the show lol.

I never knew coffee makers came with printers. o_o Definitely looking into that!

Great to hear about the wireless internet. I think I'll just save my cash and go with RezNet. I don't need anything super fancy, but was worried about connection problems or the internet just being slow. Although, it sounds like I won't have much of a problem. ^.^

So, I was reading through the answers and I had another quick question about the bedrooms again. :P I believe traditional lock from both the outside and inside, right? Does it work the same for suite style? Or do the bedrooms just lock from the inside, with the main door locking from both?
My mom will be buying my Macbook as a graduation gift, and she keeps dropping hints about 'locking my doors' whenever I'm not in my room. I think I know where I got my paranoia from (although I'm not nearly as bad). :P

Thanks again. You guys have been a huge help! If I weren't so far away I would have just booked myself a tour.

Actually, to add to this...pay attention to your belongings everywhere and especially in the library. It's not just electronics either...a friend left for a washroom break and someone cleaned out the desk. There goes 3 months worth of notes and work (paper) along with the laptop.

They are keycarded locks: think hotel room. If the door fully closes the lock automatically engages.

^ what about perth?

Yes the door locks automatically at Perth. For both your room door and also the suite door. You will need your key card to open it every time it closes.

If your roomie isn't around and you're gonna take a shower, it is generally best to shut your room door. This means you'll need to take your key card into the bathroom. You never know 'cause one of your suitemates might leave for class or for lunch while you're showering and leave the suite door open. If that happens, then your room is wide open for someone to show up and clear out the stuff.

The doorlocks in London Hall are a bit cooler because you can actually leave them unlocked (just need to swipe the card twice in succession), which is good if you want to have the door closed while studying but still leave it open for someone to come in when they knock.

I believe Med-Syd, Saugeen, and Delaware use regular keys and locks.

First year physics? If you took grade 11 or 12 physics then first year physics will be an easy GPA booster; I helped a girl do her online quiz every week, drunk almost everytime, just to make myself feel better about how eng physics raped me. Your text book will suck something awful, so I would suggest buying a used copy of first year eng physics (same material, but presented in a much, much better manner)

My best friend took that course last year. She said that the majority of the class was female, but there were approx. 30% males, so I doubt it would be awkward. She said it was super easy.

You can get to both the Greyhound and Via Rail stations in London by local bus.

An alternative to greyhound would be Via Rail... I think most students take this. Buy the student 6 pack and an ISIC card and it will save you.

If DC++ didn't have a limit, people would then start bitching about the network speed. It's just a fine line they have to maintain before students start bitching about the speed or the cap. But from what I hear, they are changing their rules around to get rid of the stupid 1GB internet cap/day.

Didn't have to be so rude, he/she was just asking.

The 6 doesn't come to the London/Essex/Perth area, though. You would have to go to Nat Sci which is a little inconvenient.

The difference in walking distance between the 2 and 6 is pretty negligible. If you take the 2, get off BEFORE you hit Dundas/Richmond. If you get off at Dundas and Talbot, you will be directly north of the Greyhound station (just walk down Talbot and it will get you there in almost the same amount of time that you would by taking the 6 to Richmond/York).

I have a feww friends who are doing a CAM degree - exactly what your doing and here's what I've heard from them:

The benefit of this program is that you have a BA degree in aviation management along with your pilot license. This is a good back up option if your having a hard time finding a suitable position.

Also, for commercial airlines you need north of 5000 hours to be even considered as a trainee for their passenger jets. Having an aviation management degree definitely helps you stand out from the crowd so it only helps the cause.

It also gives you the option of switching careers down the road. (a pilot's job can be really stressful and might be a lot to deal with when you have wife and kids)

Hope this helps.

Best bet would be to call UWO and confirm. If your only a few years removed from High School you'll be applying as a HighSchool student and as far as I recall you'll go through the same process. If you're a mature applicant: http://www.westerncalendar.uwo.ca/2009/pg54.html

Being charged by Student Health Services at UWO!

simply becoz I missed the appointment for seeing a doc(actually I did call 10 minutes before to cancel that), they charged me 30$ for missing it! what a rip-off.

Now they mailed me a threatening letter claiming that if I don't pay my 30$ they will further seal my record, so that I won't able to graduate, nor will I got my grades, etc etc.

I wonder if I should take that letter seriously? I am graduating by the end of this term. I don't have $30 to pay for this kind crap, >:(

BTW, I am a master student...not sure if student health services has this ability to interfere with my record.

any thoughts will be very appreciated!!

yes they have the right to charge you. Its not the student health that is charging you, but ministry of health gave any doctor the reserved right to charge you if you missed any appointments. they also clearly stated need 24 hr notice to cancel

and I would take it seriously. didnt you hear about the girl from york that got her transcript withheld and couldnt graduate?

especially you are a masters student, it only takes $30 from your $18000+ stipend to pay it off

Huuuuugeeeee dilemma.

Based on the PRELIMINARY exam schedule I decided to book a vacation (like EVERYTHING-- flight, hotel...) that departs right after my last exam. I KNEW that it was preliminary and it clearly states that we should not make travel arrangements, but in the past, my schedule has never changed so I took the risk.

I just went on student services and it looks like one of my exams is bumped back a day. All my plans/arrangements are non-refundable.

Ahhh.... I'm stressing out now. Anyone been in this situation before? is there ANYTHING I can do?

Ask your Prof. I had one who accommodated my travels for December due to the silly preliminary date being changed to two days later.

I don't think the Deans' Office can help you in this case...unless you can find some sort of excuse and have to write the make-up which tends to be in January (for sciences anyway). It would be awfully terrible if you "had" the flu for that last exam. But if you do have to write the make-up, study hard lol.

That sucks. Profs might accommodate you if they are nice. Some could be real jerks and just rub it in that you took the chance and went and did something you were specifically instructed not to do and now you have to pay the penalty.

I like the older fellow who works nights at the Macs Milk across the street from Essex. I'm about to head down there to pickup a jug of milk and a lollipop!

That was random, but I was there last night and they ran out of their milk bags :(

Anyone else have input on my situation? :( I e-mailed my prof two days ago and still no reply.... Starting to get really worried.

last resort,

report H1N1 last day, and have that flu last for however long your vacation is, come back and say you're better and write a make up

Though if you've emailed your prof already, reporting H1N1 could be pretty fishy now..

Don't you think talking face to face would be better.....they could be bitter all they want over e-mail but when it's face to face, they're likely to show more sympathy...

Coincidences occur. Unforeseen circumstances. It's not as if the school will check if she flew out of the country...

I don't think I'm going to report H1N1 guys :P I already e-mailed him with my situation so he knows.... but it's been 4 days and he hasn't replied =(

I'm going to his office tomorrow and I'll try to talk to him face-to-face.

i wouldve just done that from the start as like others have stated he might be more inclined to give more sympathy rather than read the email and say pfft~ hope everything works out for you.

Smeenk. Philosophy.

Go see your professor in person and explain or let him know that it was your fault and all the little things like that for your dilemma. If nothing can be done (such as allowing you to write it earlier -- which is more or likely not go to happen) feel free to let one of us know... I'm sure someone could make him an offer he can't refuse...

Good luck!
