So, who else is going into 1st year engineering at UofT? I'm going into ECE and I'm really looking forward to it.
And for those of you who signed up for f!rosh week, what group did you get? I got omega :D

Only advice in frosh week: make sure you do damn well on that aptitude test, because your future will be seriously ****ed if you don't.

The Rules:
#1. Defend the Cannon at ALL costs.
#2. Defend your hardhat.
#3. If someone loses their hardhat, give chase.
Some pointers:
Wear comfy running shoes and old clothing that you no longer need
Don't bring anything unnecessary (cameras, iPods etc...)
Don't stress too much about the aptitude test, as it only covers basic engineering topics (op-amps, Stokes' theorem, Heisenberg's quantum model etc)
At F!ROSH, you will see the true power of the mob. Straying off alone will get you jumped. Stay together and the predator-prey relationship is inversed.
Remember, Frosh Week is not reality.

Just remember that F!rosh week is the best time to meet new people.
- Make sure you go to as many events as possible to find out what you're interested in and to make some friends outside of your discipline.
- If you commute, try and meet someone that lives in residence. It's much more fun crashing downtown than having to leave early to catch the TTC.
- There's no better time to party (besides Godiva Week) since you'll get bogged down with classwork soon after.

lol taking a different approach I see...

I actually paid for the commuter program in my frosh week package, which basically means I get 3 nights of accommodation downtown during frosh week. Although, based on reviews, the place (Downtowner Inn) doesn't look so hot. I might just sign in and stay one night or something and crash at my friend's place the rest of the time.

Well, I slept in after an all night frosh party and almost missed it. An alert housemate rudely awakened us with about 10 minutes to spare. Maybe I should have slept through it as the killer hangover didn't help my score anyway.

I aint in Engineering but I am going to be in 2nd year, and am part of New College.
One moment I remember is the CHARIOT RACES. Three colleges attended I believe, New, St. Mike's and Eng.
They raced and there was a huge water balloon fight of sorts. Friendly competition. Good luck with eng, my friend is in engineering and she said she had a class about toilet paper or something along those lines.

show spirit, dye yourself purple, and your week will get very interesting and fun :)
F! Week is by far the best part of SKULE. Whether be it while you are F!ROSH, or in upper years, it is an absolute blast. Every single one of the people I met at F! week is a very close friend of mine to this day (I'm doing PEY, just finished my 3rd yaer), and will hopefully stay a close friend of mine after I graduate
Also, I'm an Eng Sci Comp, if you have any questions about engsci, computers, engineering, etc... please feel free to ask here, or in PM if you're more comfortable :)
I'm also going to be down there all week (taking the week off work), so I hope to see you all there :D
p.s. if you don't like the food, please don't tell me :P
p.p.s I'll be around wherever food is being handled :)

My hard hat is still blotchy purple from the dye from using it as a bucket. And thats err. 2 years ago.
As for skuric you're not another one of those who think the aptitude test is a joke? It really does appear on your transcript/records, although not EXTREMELY important, sometimes it does play the tilting factor on things like PEY placements and whatnot. Anyways, brush up on high school physics/calc/algeo, and then buy some of your 1st year texts to read ahead and you should do better than 80% of the people there.

i sincerely hope you are not in ece... this isn't a personal attack (or not meant to be) but there's alot of people in ECE so it that way and don't bother interacting / talking to their other classmates! Like seriously WTF!? All the other disciplines are all friends and get together, and you see ECE's where 90% of the people study by themselves, there's no sense of community and why? Because people just don't "want" to meet other people... i'm sick of it

maybe they're just a bit shy. lets face it, if you get into ece, chances are you weren't the most popular person in high school. some lack the endearing qualities that make people so personable. perhaps you just have to initiate the approach more often for them to open up.

The ECE common room is a sad sad place to be... Let's face it, other than the Min Eng common room (TV, console systems + exclusivity), the best common room is the Mech/Indy common room (pop machine, multiple couches, foosball tableX2, pool table). You do realize there are two ECE common rooms right? The new one has a big screen TV, surround sound, DVD player, cable and all that.
Also, who said you had to only interact with people in your discipline? You have tons of shared classes in 1st year where you sit side by side with all the other disciplines. You want to meet people? Get involved in EngSoc and just hang around the Atrium.

Not sure if this will help you, but I would do quite a lot of work at school, and not just between classes, but after they're all done and most people go home/res. I find that I'm really not efficient at home, and if you're the same, then you might get more work done in the same amount of hours working from school!

I wouldn't be too worried. I know plenty of people who commute about as much. You might even have an advantage over people living on their own, if you're not a good self-starter. Living on-campus is hectic and extremely distracting. Most people that I know who commute don't go home until 9pm or later anyways. There are tons of places to study on-campus.

Can you tell us how your schedule was? Like, what time you work up -- what time you started homework, what time you went to sleep.
I lived on-campus at New College my first year, so it's a little different. I basically did things when it was convenient. I never held on to a sleep schedule. However, that isn't to say that everyone was that way. A friend of mine recently graduated with a CIV degree from UofT and he had a rigid schedule that never changed and went to sleep every day at 11pm.
I find that the best thing you can do for yourself is to use your in-class time as wisely as possible. A lot of the stuff you will be exposed to really isn't that bad if you can follow your lectures and ask questions. Some of the otherwise simple subjects would seem nearly impossible if you tried to learn it on your own but 2 paragraphs of notes from a good prof can make it dead easy. Once again, ymmv.... a lot.
Also, "my prof sucked" isn't much of an excuse since no one is stopping you from skipping your classes and going to a different section. I had one particularly bad prof in 2nd year and I stopped going to his lectures early on and changed to a different lecture section. Later in the year, before finals, I returned to his lecture once and there were only about 5 people in the room including me. Poor guy, he was really nice and supposedly a great researcher but he couldn't teach to save his life.

I always found this weird about uni. Don't you kinda have to go to YOUR prof? I mean, won't there be info about tutorials/labs that's specifically only for that prof, or won't one prof ask you to do an assignment one specific way etc.?

I never had a problem with that in 1st and 2nd year. All the sections pretty much do the same stuff. Plus, just make some friends in your section and they can keep tabs for you.
Also, the midterm are usually universal among all sections and the finals are always universal. Labs and projects often mix between sections too. That's like 80% of your mark right there. Quizzes are usually co-ordinated and scheduled ahead of time. In addition to all of that, each course has a website complete with an online forum for students and announcements from professors. You'd really have to be purposely not paying attention to miss something.

So, no pop-up quizzes whatsoever? And regular quizzes are always consistent too with each section right? Like the prof you're cheating with will have the same quiz on the same sections as the prof you cheated on correct? (For lack of a better way to put it :cheesygri )

Hey man, when you are required to study most of the time in ECE, then you gotta do what you do. But you just try to make it as fun as possible with your friends...that's how I maintained some sort of social life in there.
Even if I tried to make friends in other dicsiplines, I probably won't have time to hang around (and plus I didn't live in RES).

That's usually correct. I've yet to experience a true pop-quiz with absolutely no warning. If you just read the class forums, read the emails you get from your profs and talk to other people in your sections every now and then, I'd say its pretty much impossible to miss something worth marks or be truly surprised about something like a quiz. Midterms and exams are obviously never a surprise for anyone, except maybe for the mark you get after you take them.

No one said you have to interact with people in your own discipline however we ECE's don't get the priveledge to share classes with the other disciplines (other than APS) so we're really stuck with our own group for most of the day until we're free to run to the atrium!

I remember there was one class (I don't recall which however) where the proff asked us to stay in our own tutorial section and not move around since each teacher was going to start from a different topic and move around from there
but otherwise, no pop-quizzes, and you'll be given plenty of warning for upcoming things (usually on the first week they will give you a date for every quiz, test, midterm, etc. for the rest of the semester)

that's about the same time as my commute! it got annoying at times when i wanted to stay on campus, but had to go home cuz i didnt want to commute alone too late (yea...i'm a girl). if you're focussed and work on your homework right away when you go home and stay on top of all of it, you should be fine! keep in mind, that your classes might not end at 5 everyday to get you home by 6. last year i had two days that ended at 6, one at 5, one at 3 and one at 12. it all depends on your time management and what your sched may be! what engr are you in? ..sorries if you mentioned it somewhere else!
Can you tell us how your schedule was? Like, what time you work up -- what time you started homework, what time you went to sleep.
every morning left around 805-810 from warden, went back to kennedy to get a seat then to st.george, then queen's park. got to school by 9. school. got home normally by 7 when classes ended at 6. procrastination....started homework around 8-9. more procrastination during. slept at 2-3. wake up at 7. by no means is my schedule the perfect one!! if i took out the procrastination, i would have been able to sleep well before 2-3am.
Not sure if this will help you, but I would do quite a lot of work at school, and not just between classes, but after they're all done and most people go home/res.
haha this is definitely easy to say BEFORE school starts. that's a good mentality to have, but for me as soon as school started...you needed those breaks in between class to sleep, eat and rest. it sort of depends on who you make friends with too. i know some ppl who could study at school until late hours, while others would spend that same amount of time doing nothing and gaming/watching anime.

Just make sure to dye your entire body purple, shout the engineering songs loudly
The Engineering (Godiva's) Hymn
Godiva was a lady, who through Coventry did ride,
To show to all the villagers her fine and lily-white hide.
The most observant villager, an Engineer (of course),
Was the only one to notice that Godiva rode a horse.
CHORUS:
We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the Engineers,
We can, we can, we can, we can demolish forty beers,
Drink rum, drink rum, drink rum, drink rum and come along with us,
For we don't give a damn for any damn man who don't give a damn for us!
Said she, "I've come a long, long way and I will go as far
With the man who takes me from this horse and leads me to a bar."
The men who took her from her steed and led her to a beer,
Were a blurry-eyed surveyor and a drunken Engineer.
An artsie and Engineer once found a gallon can,
Said the artsie, "Match me drink for drink, as long as you can stand."
They drank three drinks, the artsie fell, his face was turning green,
But the Engineer drank on and said, "It's only gasoline."
My father was a miner from the Northern Malamute,
My mother was a mistress in a house of ill repute.
The last time that I saw them both these words rang in my ears,
"Get out of here you son of a ***** and join the Engineers."
All Eng Sci types in second year are really in a plight,
They're the masochistic ones, who haven't seen the light,
After two more years they will all be just as brain dead,
As any first year Civil Engineering cement head.
On reading Karma Sutra, a guy learned position nine
For proving masculinity, it truly was divine.
But then one day the girl rebelled and threw him on his rear,
For he was a feeble artsie and she was an Engineer.
Venus is a statue made entirely of stone,
There's not a fig leaf on her, she's as naked as a bone.
On noticing her arms were gone, an Engineer discoursed,
"The damn thing's busted concrete and it should be reinforced."
I happened once upon a girl, who eyes were full of fire,
Her physical endowments would have made yours hands perspire.
To my surprise she told me that she never had been kissed,
Her boyfriend was a tired Engineering scientist.
The army and the navy boys went out to have some fun,
Down to the local tavern where the fiery liquors run,
But all they found were empties, for the Engineers had come,
And traded all their instruments for gallon kegs of rum.
Sir Francis Drake and all his men set out for Calais Bay,
They'd heard the Spanish Rum fleet was headed up that way.
But the Engineers had beat them by a night and half a day,
And though as drunk as they could be, you still could hear them say...
Caesar went to Egypt at the age of fifty-three,
Cleopatra's blood was warm, her heart was young and free.
And every night when Julius said goodnight at three o'clock,
A Roman Engineer was waiting just around the block.
A maiden and an Engineer were sitting in the park,
The Engineer was busy doing research after dark.
His scientific method was a marvel to observe,
While his right hand wrote the figures down, his left hand traced the curves.
The Jerry P. Potts trophy for the chariot race at SkuleTM
Had been stolen from the fold but Mario said, "Dis ain't cool".
So Mario recovered it, returned it to the throngs,
On the condition that the SkuleTM mates sing his praises in their song.
An Engineer once came to class so drunk and very late,
He stumbled through the lecture hall at an ever-diminishing rate.
The only things that held him up and kept him on his course,
Were the boundary condition and the electromotive force.
Godiva was a lady well-endowed there was no doubt,
She never wore a stitch of cloths, just wound her hair about,
The first man ever made her was an Engineer (of course),
But on just one drink and artsie fink once did Godiva's horse!
Ace Towing roams the streets of Yorkville each and every night,
They tow the cars, and stow the cars and hide them out of sight;
They tried to tow Godiva's Horse, the Engineers said "Hey!"
They towed away the towing truck, and now the Ace must pay.
My father peddles opium, my mother's on the dole,
My sister used to walk the streets but now she's on parole,
My brother runs a restaurant with bedrooms in the rear,
But they don't even speak to me 'cause I'm an Engineer.
Joe E. SkuleTM's 100 but he has a heart of gold;
He gave the meds his SkuleTM house when it was 94 years old.
The meds were very grateful, but they have problems with precision,
For they use those T-squares and dividers when making their incisions.
Industrials have got the dates and that's a known fact.
It's not the way they part their hair, or in the way they act,
It's that they're such good lovers with that extra special touch,
Since you have to get that skillful when you **** the dog so much.
Rapunzel let her hair down for two suitors down below,
So one of them could grab a hold and give the old heave-ho.
The prince began to climb at once, but soon came out the worst,
For the Engineer rode up a lift and reached Rapunzel first.
Elvis was a legend, he's the King of Rock & Roll,
But the life he was leading, well it finally took its toll,
He realized too late that he choose the wrong career,
So he faked his death, and came to SkuleTM to become an Engineer.
A U. of T. Engineer once found the gates of Hell,
Looked the devil in the eye and said, "You're looking well."
Satan just returned the glare and said, "Why visit me?
You've been through Hell already, since you went to U. of T.!"
For 50 years the engineers at Queens' have had our pole,
From Varsity they took it, and their F!rosh week was its role;
But 28 of our own went down, and with a cunning plan
We opened up an unlocked door and brought it home again!
Now you've heard our story and you know we're Engineers,
We love to hate our problem sets, we love to drink our beers.
We drink to every person who comes here from far and near,
'Cause we're a HELL-OF-A, HELL-OF-A, HELL-OF -A, HELL-OF-A, HELL-OF-AN-ENGINEER!!!

Show Spirit, Spiriit and more Spirit. I think that's always been the motto. I also don't think they "recruit" until 4th year, so you have a LOT of time to show spirit spirit and more spirit :P

Fight for the old country!

that's about the same time as my commute! it got annoying at times when i wanted to stay on campus, but had to go home cuz i didnt want to commute alone too late (yea...i'm a girl). if you're focussed and work on your homework right away when you go home and stay on top of all of it, you should be fine! keep in mind, that your classes might not end at 5 everyday to get you home by 6. last year i had two days that ended at 6, one at 5, one at 3 and one at 12. it all depends on your time management and what your sched may be! what engr are you in? ..sorries if you mentioned it somewhere else!

Guys, I'm scared.
I think I'll be commuting roughly 50mins to an 1hour each way. Will I have enough "time" in the evening to do homework. Say I get home at 6pm, finish dinner at 6:25pm...will I be doing work well till 2am? It's basically 2h of sleep/study I'm losing...:(
You'll have time, don't worry. There are tons of ECE commuters who commuted that long or longer and did alright. I feel your pain on the whole loss of 2 hours thing, though. I did it for the first 3 years of class and most of PEY. It's doable and if you're smart about your timetable not all that bad, but in the end it's still two hours you could be using to do something else. Eventually it starts to wear you down.
How long you spend working at night depends mostly on you - some people can get the work done very quickly and painlessly but others need to attend all the labs/tutorials/etc. and spend quite a bit of time getting the stuff to actually sink in. It's the same deal with studying.
There are probably going to be nights around midterms/assignment due dates when you'll work from 6:25 pm to 2:00 am but it doesn't have to happen regularly if you plan your time well.

First year is a tough schedule so it seems, but 1st semester is breezy, its just like high school review, then slow-easy high school teaching pace. Picks up a bit after 2nd term. And 2nd year, well, it gets kinda tough (well, it was for me).

Where are you commuting from? The GO buses to Richmond Hill go faster than the trains. While it says the bus should arrive at, let's say, 9:30pm, it actually arrives at 9:15pm.

No need for a pencil case; carry a pencil, pen, and a calculator. Don't carry binders, carry either a notebook that fits 5 subjects (which I don't do) or buy a notepad-type thing from the U of T store (it'll come with the crest!), put plain paper in it, and write on it, and then later at home, have a huge binder and put all the notes and handouts in there. That way, you're only carrying a notepad that's at most half an inch thick.

T-Card is your student card. To get the GO pass form, you need to go to the Undergrad office on the first floor of GB. For the TTC metropass, visit utsu.ca for the dates and locations, and bring your T-Card with you.
PS. You should always bring your T-Card with you, as you won't be able to get into some labs otherwise.

I think the chem is a good thing to have somewhere for the breadth (my version of the ECE curriculum didn't have chemistry at all), but first year really needs to have two programming courses. Writing code is a huge part of being in ECE. APS105 is a good course but where are way way way too many ECE students who have trouble programming - they shouldn't be taking it out of the curriculum.
What do the courses in second year look like? Is discrete math back in 2F again?

I think discrete math is gone completely.
Anyway, I was in a couple prof's offices at the end of last year, and the whole curriculum is a big deal for them. I thought the university just kind of runs, has a set curriculum, professors teach it, and that's the end of the story, but it turns out each one of them has their own opinion on how it should be made. The ones I've spoken to (inc. Prof. Rose) were all supporters of having 3 programming courses in the first two years (APS105, ECE106, ECE299), but last I heard, one of the ECE298/ECE299 courses is being axed (I believe it's ECE298 because it doesn't have programming).
Anyway the point of the above, rather incoherent, post was to emphasize that professors do care about what you learn.

Discrete math is gone completely? I know there's a lot to cram into the first two years before people specialize, but damn. Discrete math is important. At least they've got linear algebra back.
Rose has his head on straight when it comes to setting up the curriculum. When I took ECE106 it felt too much like "OK, we just taught you all this stuff in Java now let's go do most of the same stuff again in C++." Personally I think one semester of C followed by another of C++ would be closer to ideal. There are too many people who probably still don't know how to work with pointers :).
Any idea what's going in 2F instead of 298?

I'm in Industrial, and I take programming 2nd term. I have a fair bit of knowledge in VB -- I know next to nothing about Java. Is Java "hard"? What type of programming do you guys do, is it more theoretical -- ie find the largest prime number, solving riddles, or is more application based. APS 101 is the course.
Thanks.

I actually didn't find Discrete math all that useful and it seems we're going to be redoing it in third year anyways (albeit a lot more intensely and more in depth).
We 1T0's had to C++ courses so it worked out pretty well for us. I think the 1T1's will just be learning C.
Here's my second semester:

No Java isn't hard. Although you guys might have to do some OOP or the very basics of it anyways (oop is object oriented programming btw).
Since alot of people have no programming experience you guys will stay pretty basic so don't fret. If you know VB and the basics of how to program something then you're way ahead of everyone else

I know that courses for university are exciting and making you nervous, but just remember that if you're having a problem with something, or are nervous about something, it is likely at least 50% of the people are in the same boat.
That being said, you'll have plenty of time to worry about courses once classes start, you should focus on the awesomeness that is F! week instead for now :)
www.froshweek.ca
I remember when I was entering university, I read my F! handbook guide inside out so many times, it's amazing how much that thing helps in integrating with university better, and it even has some cool surprises sometimes :)

Linear Algebra should put on the 2nd year rather than the 1st (esp. first semester). From my experience, lots of students simply cannot understand the concept of vector spaces in their first semester of university studies. They are expecting some high school math reviews in the first few months and its better to put discrete math (logic stuff) in 1st year as it is more easily understood.

Java isn't hard - don't worry about it. It's a little different than VB and it'll probably be your first introduction to object-oriented programming, but as a language it still handles a lot of the "hard stuff" (stuff in lower-level languages like C or C++ that makes a lot of programmers, beginner and otherwise, rip out their hair) under the hood so you don't have to.
I'm not familiar with APS101 but I remember the non-ECE C programming course they used to offer (APS104) had a final project which was just a Scrabble game - which seemed more applied to me.

I hate "ripping off" my parents, I don't do it anymore of course. When I was about 6-10 years old, I used to pocket bus money as I'd get on the bus free (not here in Canada), and I used to feel bad then, but hey, I bought bubble gum with that money so I was happy.
I still feel bad about doing that, at age 20.

Because I did that in high-school...granted it wasn't 2-3hrs solid, maybe 20-30 minutes wasted snacking, going on facebook/msn. So what do you guys think, what about midterms, exams?

Depends on the person, but that doesn't sound too unreasonable. It probably averages out to something around that or maybe a little more, but around midterms/project deadlines/exams the workload can get way higher.

Unlike hugejazz, I don't think you should stay up all night over it. It's not a really big deal if you don't do well. And anyway, you'll learn in engineering that sleep and health are extremely important...
The Secdonary Education Evaluation is mainly used to help university administrators evaluate the differences between different high schools. They need to know where you guys are at. Of course, you'll probably want to do well if you want to represent your high school well. You also don't want to fail. Some of the people that got really low marks on the SEE had to go meet the Dean last year to see why they did so poorly and how they got a high enough high school average to sneak into Engineering. Also, if you do well, it'll be somewhat helpful in the future. So do the best you can! :) I'm not saying don't study, but don't pull an all nighter for it. You still have lots of fun activities for Frosh week tomorrow!
Edit: To kt11: Some more advanced stuff will be on the exam to be able to differentiate between students from good high schools and students from bad high schools. If you came from a high school that wasn't "top of the line" per-say, you should expect to not know everything that's on the test. However, I think you should at least know half of the stuff to pass. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what your high school was teaching you. I went to high school in Alberta, and I learned basic integration, integration by parts, integration by partial fractions, and some ODE (ordinary differential equations) stuff. We never really covered PDE's in any good depth though.
BTW how was your first day of Frosh Week? I hope you enjoyed it lots. I'm sure the downtown walkaround is something you'll remember for a while. :) It's a shame I didn't see very many of you guys bow down before Godiva's Chocolate today. :( What Frosh group were you in? There was physics, chemistry, calculus, a bit of general knowledge (economics, politics, world issues). No algebra however. Yeah I think I did pretty bad, I did find the calculus section somewhat doable. Physics got a little overboard, Chemistry was >:( . And the MAT188 is a scare commodity amongst the campus, the line-up at the book-store(s) will be ridicilous once they come. I've tried to get as much done by sharing texts with people in class, but it's still not enough.
