Just picked up a Q6600 G0 stepping at infonec.com (http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=349999)
I have seen Q6600 for cheaper at NCIX and Direct Canada (Plus nice that if you are in Ontario, no PST!), but you are not guareenteed a G0 stepping one.
The clerk said they just received then yesterday. Said about 5-7 left in Mississauga location.

thanks for the info. A little more expensive but you you need G0 then it's worth it.
But then again wait a couple weeks more and there should be majority G0 steppings for sale.

Does any software take advantage of quad core tech?
Here is a short list of programs that actually use all 4 cores of a quad core chip. If you know of others, please post them to this thread, and I'll update it.
THE LIST:
Real-World Applications
3D Studio MAX using Mental Ray Renderer (>99 % of 4 cores)
Adobe Premiere Elements v3.0.2 (52-85 % of 4 cores depending on source type, filters, etc.)
AutoGK v2.40 (30-53 % of 4 cores depending on source type, filters, etc.)
Cinema 4d Rendering (>99 % of 4 cores)
Dr. DivX v2.0.0 (47-65 % of 4 cores depending on source type, filters, etc.)
DVDShrink v3.2 (~90 % of 4 cores)
Lightwave 3D (>99 % of 4 cores)
Nero Suite 7.x (>90 % of 4 cores when encoding)
Noise Ninja v2.13 (~80 % of 4 cores when doing the noise reduction on an image)
Sony Vegas 7.0e (83-100 % of 4 cores depending on source type, filters, etc.)
TMPG XPress v4.2.3.193 (65-100 % of 4 cores depending on source type, filters, etc.)
Winrar v3.70 (~85-90 % of 4 cores on benchmark; ~75% in practice)
x264 v0.55.663 (>99 % of 4 cores when doing the 2nd pass of a 2 pass encode)
Benchmark/Distributed Computing Applications
BOINC Clients (most of them) (>99 % of 4 cores)
Folding@home SMP client (>99 % of 4 cores)
Muon1 DPAD (~85 % of 4 cores)
OCCT (>99 % of 4 cores)
Prime95 v25.3 (>99 % of 4 cores)
wprime v1.50 (>99 % of 4 cores)

Buttmuchers, and they told me that they won't have G0 for a long time. <> Whatever, my G0 arrives from DirectCanada on Tuesday... cheaper too.
... I still might buy motherboard from them.

Pretty much any CAD/CAE program, and general usage.

I'm looking for the Quad Core Xeon X3220 G0 stepping but Infonec hasn't received 'em yet... I refuse to buy from NCIX because if I get a bum stepping those morons expect me to pay 15% of my purchase for a "restocking fee"
What a bunch of scumbags, how should there be any type of fee on UNOPENED merchandise

From what I've read, it looks like the Go stepping allows a higher overclock.

Which store are you talking about that we don't have to pay the GST??? (Infonec, NCIX or Direct Canada??)
I am planning to build a new system so I want to pay lower tax :)

Bought a X3220 Xeon tonight from Direct Canada... Hoping like hell it's gonna be a G0 but the reason I bought from DC over NCIX is because DC has no restocking fee on unopened merchandise :)

Yeah but they wont refund shipping + u pay to ship it back, I rather just buy it in store and make sure its a g0...yeah 10-20$ extra, but worth it.

I considered that already... means I'll be out $9.99 , I can send mail for free on a coporate FedEx account.. It sucks but I guess it could be worse
Also Infonec doesn't have the Xeons

I just got their latest email flyer and they're selling the Q6600 with G0 stepping for $12 more than the B3 stepping. What the hell is that

That's the charge for someone to look at each box and sort them into 2 piles(GO and B3). If you want to play the G0 lottery then you can pay less elsewhere and take your chances. $12 is descent IMO.

Just called them and they said they have lots of G0 in stock. $12 more than the b3 is like nothing.

This is a great service that Infonec is providing, no other retailer in Canada is doing it AFAIK. Kudos to them, I'd like to see them make some inroads into CC's Ontario PC shop marketshare. Always had good service in their Markham store too, even as the only white guy in the shop.
Like Duckdown says, this is a way to sidestep the lottery and $12 is a very reasonable price to pay for this guarantee (and this is coming from a typical RFD cheapo).

It costs more $ for G0, probably because it costs more for them to get the G0 I believe. Even with $12 more, it's still cheaper than CC.

I can't find the X3220's in G0 _anywhere_ yet, and I've been looking like crazy
Also these are not SMP chips, meaning they work in regular core2duo motherboards and do not need special RAM or anything like that and aren't used for dual chip setups
