Great price, I just wish the 5 HD DVD free offer was extended to canada. That's the only thing holding a lot of people back...

If only Macs could play HD-DVDs, I'd have snapped one long ago. No worries though, Blu-ray is the dead standard. :)

The drive works on a Mac. I don't know if there is any software that will let you play it on the Mac though.

Especially compared to all those people in the US who bought it from Bestbuy for $150 USD and got King Kong bundled with it, and then the 5 free movie mail in offer.
BinaryJay:
I don't know why anyone would think HD DVD is a dying format? I mean, just last week they managed to bring their movie sales back up to 1/2 of Blu-Ray's (the week before had HD DVD selling 1/3 of Blu-Ray's... although the rest of the year has been a steady 2:1 for Blu-Ray). And the fact that Target (the second largest retail presence in the USA) has now pulled all the HD DVD player stand alones they had been selling on their webpage is not at all a sign of things to come. Nor the fact that Weinstein unofficially announced their format neutrality at Comicon this year with the statement that the movies from Grindhouse will be released on Blu-Ray. Thus leaving Universal as the only major or minor studio exclusive to HD DVD (who has openly admitted at Comicon that General Electric, the company that owns a controlling stake in them, is pressuring them to go neutral). Nope, all is well with HD DVD... ;)
That being said, those who don't have Ameri-friends who can help them take advantage of the mail in offer for free movies, this is probably the cheapest way for people to buy into HD DVD. But I hope before anyone buys into a HiDef format (either one) they look very hard at what's available and what's NOT available on the format you're considering. Also, looking at the sales figures for both formats is a good idea too:
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=10996
The above post is updated every Friday with the latest figures provided by Nielsen Videoscan, posted in Home Media Magezine. It's an unbiased 3rd party source.
And finally.... remember these words of truth:
If you want to be an early adopter (of either HiDef format), the only guarentee is that you *WILL* get screwed over. If your format doesn't fail eventually, you're at LEAST going to be spending 2-5 times (or more) to get it early, then the price of the product will be when it goes mainstream.

All this **** talking about HD-DVD, jeeez
I own a 360 and a HD-DVD player, my Hd TV, sound system and amp cost me about 4.5Gz, so spending $200 on a High Def Player...which may or may not be 'the winning format' does bother me one bit! Honestly, Planet Earth Hd-DVD was well worth the investment, if in two years Blu-ray wins, i'll just buy a cheap blu-ray player (probably for $200)! Big deal!

So right... $170 is just not a huge amount of $. No cheaper way of getting HD movies.

Isn't buying bare HD-DVD drive from ebay and then loads new firmware to be used in PC is cheaper? Less than $100, just internal only.

If you have an HTPC, sure. But most people that want to watch stuff on their TVs without a PC won't like this option so I guess it's personal preference.

That's your choice to make, and there's nothing wrong with that :)
I just like making sure that people are kept aware of the circumstances regarding the format war, so they can make their minds up for themselves. There's a big difference between buying a cheap format that you know and understand is losing a format war, and could quite possibly become useless within a couple years... and seeing a post on here and saying "hey, that's cheap, and it will probably be a good 10+ year investment for my home entertainment system."
By all means, buy into HD DVD as much as you want... just be AWARE of what you're doing :)

Why is it that in the BluRay/HDDVD format war, does no one think it'll be resolved where every drive just ends up being a combo drive?

This is exactly how the so called format war will end. Just like DVD-R and Sony's DVD+R can both be played in most players. Universal will continue to release on HD DVD because the discs are cheaper to press and Disney and Fox will stick with Blu-Ray because of their false sense of hope with BD+ protecting their content.
I wonder what paramount and Warner will do.
NCIX will probably keep putting these on sale if they're selling that fast. I'm looking forward to getting an internal Blu drive in the future

Not likely....Bluray is starting to go down in flames.

in the end, everything boils down to price. This is why HD-DVD will win. Who cares if blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD in a market of 100 000 people out of 300 million. When 100 million of those 300 million get into purchasing hd discs, i bet you any money hd-dvd will win with its cheaper price, as those millions of people are your average joes, who dont give a crap (or even know) the difference between the formats. They just want the cheapest one.
I myself will scoop up HD-DVD once I can buy a drive for $100 Cdn (xbox add-on or stand alone). Or until some hd-dvd burners come out for cheap along with media. I cant affortd to be paying $30+ for 1 movie. but I can copy alot of movies once the blank media prices fall.

Combo drives cost more money then buying an HD DVD player and a Blu-Ray player seperately... in fact, you could probably pick up about 6-8 or more movies in HiDef at the same time, and still save some money!
It's quite unlikely we'll be forced to settle for a drawn out format war with the way things are going. Toshiba is the only manufacturer of HD DVD hardware (LG has a drive that is "compatible" but missing many of the mandatory HD DVD features, and not licensed or supported by the DVD-Forum for HD DVD). All the other CE manufacturers are rallying behind Blu-Ray, all the movie studios except for Universal are rallying behind Blu-Ray, and consumers are rallying behind Blu-Ray in numbers somewhere between 2:1 and 3:1 lately. To top it off, some places, like Target and Costco, have now removed all the HD DVD stand alone players from their websites even (their USA sites at least).
It's all fine and dandy for people to say that Blu-Ray is going down in flames, but in reality, Blu-Ray is cleaning up. In fact, HD DVD used to have between 60% and 70% of the HiDef stand alone market... and now they're down to 55% (according to Toshiba's *OWN* press releases!!).
Please understand, I'm not trying to say the format itself is bad. It's quite capable of producing quality titles... it's just a lot more limited, and likely to be without any real support within a year.

There are still more standalone HD-DVD players being sold than standalone BD players, AFAIK.
Bah. I'm just waiting until one becomes the winner.. I really don't care which one it is.

I like both formats, but HD DVD in my opinion has better content right now and in the coming months like Heroes Season 1.
I do think the average joe schmoe would be able to recognize what HD DVD is, can't say the same about Blu-ray.
