View Full Version : Free Car Washes @ Esso

I noticed this recently, not sure if it's been posted. If you visit Esso, you'll notice a little sign next to the cash (in Ontario at least as far as I know) that says "If we don't ask you if you'd like a car wash, it's free (with fuel purchase)"

So far I've gotten one free Luxury wash (10.99 Value) cause she never asked.... I usually pay at the pump with my speed pass, but going inside to pay with my speed pass for the chance at a free car wash is worth it!

i don't get it, wat the cashier suppose to ask u?

They are supposed to ask you if you want a car wash today, kind of like the McDonald's people "do you want fries with that" question.

If they don't ask you "do you want a car wash today" (or something along those lines), then you get a car wash for free.

So if they forget to ask you if you want a car wash, but don't punch in that you get a free car wash, what's the point? (Sorry, need my morning coffee...)

Let's try that again. When you pay for your gas inside, if they don't ask if you would like a car wash as well, you point that out to them and they will have to offer you a free carwash.

Wow, that's two people that needs coffee or something to wake em up:

1) Walk in to pay for gas and say HI to the cashier

2) If you see that little sign that says "If we don't ask you if you want a car wash, it's free!", then wait and see if they ask you if you want a car wash.

3) if they DON'T ask you if you would like a car wash as you pay for your gas...point to the sign and get a car was FREE.

Of course, if the sign isn't there...you can't get a free car wash. And just in case there are more sleepy people...no you can't force them not to say it by covering their mouth or pretending you didn't hear them say that they asked for a car wash.

And no I don't work as esso, that was a real gas sign from last year on the left.

Its like the Seinfeld episode where they say the tellers will say "Hello" or else you get 20 bucks... Kramer harasses them to death coz the teller said "Hey" but they finally reach an agreement since it started with an "H"... lol.

Try your luck!

When did Canada abandon the public education system. OP post was very clear.

Looks to be Esso found a way to make a cashier job even lousier. Wanna bet the mgr gives them heck for each free car wash.

Remember kids, get a good education (yes, that means learn to read) to reduce your chance of working in a gas station.

Also, this was posted before and moved to the expired deals (not sure why?) but High-grade Premium 92 Octane is still being sold for the price of Mid-grade 89 Octane at all Esso stations I visit.

I agree with you to a point... since its not faceless, you know its the cashier that screwed up.

But RFD'rs always take advantage of other people's mistakes, what about pricing errors instore?? Or errors on flyers?? Someone, somewhere had to make that mistake

It's a kind of marketing tool... how many people will try (like me) to see if they end up with a free car wash? :)

Almost seemed like it was going to happen but just as I was about to swipe my Speedpass, the cashier spoke those words that we do not want to hear! :( Guess my car will get a wash some other time!

haha, I'm so dissapointed when they say it. "no thanks, I say"

Some say it like robots, cause i'm sure their boss is on them.... when I got my free wash she didn't say a word just immediately printed it off and handed it to me. :)

I'm sure the whole campaign is to encourage customers to use up their points or spend more money on car washes... and not to penalize the cashiers.

Do they actually honour this? How many times I have been in situations like this but never got anything ...

- If we don't give you a receipt, it's free
- If your order isn't ready within 15 minutes, it's free
- If we messed up your order, it's free
- If we don't give you a bag, it is free
- If ...., it's free

This is also very ambiguous...For example, if I just go in and buy a chocolate (without filling up gas), will they ask me "Would you like a car wash?" ?

Anyways, it doesn't hurt to try... :)

I accidentally forgot my wallet when I refill my car at Esso last night. Somewhat I was confused when I paid cash inside: why that cashier boy asked me everything like pump machine? - "Do you have points card?" "Would you like to have a car wash?".

You just give me the answer now. I didn't pay any attention if there was a post saying "free car wash". But I definitely will go there again.

Sorry for giving you extra workload, poor cashier boy...

Customer: "Yes please!"

Hardly a deal, it is a chance you may or may not get the free wash based on cashier.
kinda pathetic to demand a free wash if the cashier forgot his/her line.
They may get fired for giving out too many car washes :-)

its part of the corporate marketing campaign.

forgetting to ask once or twice or ocaasisonally is ok and part of their absorbed costs of the promotion. Humans and other intelligent creatures generally learn from mistakes and repetition, if they dont then the boss has more things to worry about, (close the cash register, lock the door, ask for a credit card signature..etc).

nothing wrong with enforcing it as a customer if employes are supposed to part of their job.

I dont gas up at Esso but at Shell the prices are as follows for their soft cloth washes.

6.99 for basic
7.99 for okay wash(forget wat they call it)
9.99 for supremo (in other words a basic)

I also saw a sign that said they will upgrade your wash to next higher one at no charge (could not read fine print so not sure of limitations, exclusions etc...)

I never wash at these soft cloth, no touch, etc....always handwash....summer and winter.....I saw what the "soft cloth" wash did to one guys chevy impala (older model but in very good shape) ...scratches from front to back along hood, roof and trunk..ouch.

And on the point about not taking advantage of the fact that the gas attendant did not ask about the wash?...That would never stop me.....IF Esso can post it ..then they can live up to it....period.....You live by the fine print and you can die by it too.

Doh.. i hate going to the cashier to pay for gas... ah well. i do fill up at esso regularly. I'll have to try it out.

Sorta related, but not really, another YMMV way of getting free car washes is by complaining/commending someone via the company's customer service/public relations email.

I had a horrible experience at sunoco one time (during the gas shortages) and wrote in and they sent me a coupon for a free ultra carwash.

I commended someone at a shell station (helping me during winter with a flat) and they sent me *3* free premium car washes.

Petro is tight. I complained to them one time about a rude cashier and i never even got a response.

You gotta jump through a few hoops, but if your "true" story is believable and you're enterprising enough, I'm sure some of you can make something of this policy. Just don't put anything in your complaint mail about expecting reimbursement or else they'll catch on probably deny you and others since this post will probably trigger a flood of mails (knowing how RFDers work). Just write a polite but stern complaint/commendation with a lengthy but believable back story about how you're disappointed at sunoco/shell/esso/etc... and how you always go there and now want to go to other brands and cross your fingers they'll bite.

Of course, if you really do have a bad/good customer experience, you should write in and let the higher ups know. I truly hope the guy at shell that helped me out got something out of it....

We buy gas, there is a CLEARLY a sign that says "If we don't ask, you get a free car wash!"

The clerk does not ask, my friend asks if we get a free car wash. He says the car wash is closed, so I ask if we get a voucher for a free car wash ask per the policy. He rudely replies with a "no" and laughs at us.

The clerk was of west asian decent, 40-50 years old with an accent. I didn't get his name, nor do I think he would have wanted to give it to me.

I think that the Esso guy has right. Is it only me who think that he couldn't ask you if you want a car wash because the car wash is closed?

Suppose that he asked someone else:
Esso : "Do you need a car wash?"
the other guy could say: "Yes"
the Esso guy: "Sorry, the car wash is closed"

The idea is "If the Esso guy didn't do his Job well, you will get a free car wash, otherwise, not". The Esso guy did his Job, so no free car wash.

I was at one of the esso stations and decided to try it out. Then I was paying inside guy took my CC and then said "Do you want something else....car wash?"

Oh well, it seems like these guys are pretty good with it :)

I would submit a complaint to the district manager for that Esso. The offer does not restrict itself to only when the car wash is in operation.

Gas Attendant: "That'll be $25...would you like a car wash this evening?"
Customer: "Yes please!"
Gas Attendant: "Sorry, it's only open during the daytime"

ROFL. I can picture that happening and the customer going WTF?

My brother worked in a gas station for a couple years and although he always annoyed people by asking all that extra stuff, stuff like this does effect the employee heavily. Too many free washes and they are fired. Also I think each wash comes out of their pay. I say be kind to your fellow man, especially poor ones who are trying to get by on a low sallary at a crappy job. DO NOT ask for a free wash. At least if you have any morals.

I am not sure if it is legal to take it from your pay. You can probably get fired
but again, I don't see lineups for applying for job at gas station, but I do see a lot of advertisings of positions at gas station.

If it was me and they tried to take it out of my pay, I would give everyone free car wash  and then said F* off to the manager :D

The "RFD Effect" helps change and evolve corporate policies.

Example: Staples 150% Price Guarantee has now evolved to 110%. :)

haha... true dat! :D

If your brother did his job correctly, he would not have any issues. I believe the policy is to insure that the employees are promoting the customer service and selling more washes. I expect good customer service when I giving someone my money. If these employee have any morals, they should be offering free washes rather than refusing to honor the company policy.

Do what you promise!!

my brother did do his job properly, it never happened to him, but it did happen to co-workers of his. Being asked if you want a car wash today is not good customer service. In fact, my brother said he had lots of people complain to him about being hasseled cause he had to ask fro car wash, and if they want bags of chips or drinks. OF course he hassled the people anyway cause it was his job, but he told me alot of people didnt like it. but weather they like it or not, if your in there buying gas and a guy doesent/forgets to ask you if you want a wash and you take the free wash, just realise your getting a $6 car wash free and possibly making an employee lose his job just for forgetting a line, or lose that $6 and personally pay for your car wash, when you most likely have a much easier life then he does with your job (not always, but most likely).

I can understand wanting to get an employee in some trouble when your treated badly, ignored, etc etc (Although I still will not personally complain). But not being asked if you want a wash with your fuel purchase is hardly a reason to get an employee in trouble. I find many people here on RFD dont give a **** about the other guy. Even when im treated badly at places, I never complain to the point where some1 gets in trouble. I just wouldent feel right knowing I significantly changed a persons life (fired) because of a stupid inconvinece in my own.

I guess I just care more about others then a free car wash.

This is starting to go a little off topic, but don't blame the customer for idiotic policies that corporate HQ makes. Even *WE* recognize this is a stupid policy (still isn't going to stop us from making the most of it)... And if the managers are taking the free car washes out of the attendant's pay, then that's 100% ethically wrong (i dunno if it's legal). If the store gets robbed, does the attendant have to pay the company back for the money stolen? If you're in a situation like this, complain to the people your manager report to!

In anycase, it just sounds like a stupid plan to try to squeeze more money out of customers. As if gas prices arn't high enough and oil industries arn't making enough profit... sheesh... God knows how much money a carwash makes.. a couple cents in soap, reused water, electricity to power the brushes... i'm certian it's *much* less than the 10 bucks they charge...

I went to McDonalds drive-through the other day and person asked me if "I would like an apple stroodle with that" or something to that effect. I didn't quite comprehend what they said because it was over the intercom but it really pissed me off. The drive through is supposed to be speedy and often times it's hard to recognise what is being said over the intercom. Add to the fact that this person had a strong accent and it took quite some time for me to recognise that they were asking me to if I would like to purchase something after I had completed my order.

i'm doubting that they'd actually be at risk of losing their job....

if they do happen to giveaway too many free washes, the 1st thing they'd get would prbly be a reminder/warning f/ their boss(es)

~ 10 years ago when I worked at Tim Hortons our manager one day came in and told us they wanted us all to from now on ask "Would you like any donuts or muffins with that" to EVERY PERSON who went through the drive thru and ordered only a coffee. They said it was "up-selling".

Anyway I did it maybe 3 shifts and never did after, I just found it to be so rude and condescending. My fellow employees kept doing it but the whole thing wore off after maybe 3 weeks.

I swear to god at least 1 out of every 3 people woudl reply with a "WHAT?" or a "what did you say", the other 2 out of 3 would refuse, some of them irately. It never sold any extra muffins or donuts but I know it pissed a lot of people off.

I really don't get what is going through some people at HQ's head when they come up with this kind of crap. Do they really think customers are so dumb and have so much extra cash, that they don't know what to spend their money on, and will spend it on whatever you ask them to? I doubt this kind of up-selling has worked positively for any company ever.

but i think the prblm is that it might get annoying after a while, esp. for repeat, long-time customers.....

What are you talking about? It was employees more than half the time, I went out of my way to abuse the policies (when I worked there) so people like me, and you could take full advantage. hah, I made sure I made sure any RFD'er got what they wanted through any of my managers.

I usually pay at the pump with my speed pass, but going inside to pay with my speed pass for the chance at a free car wash is worth it!

still on/

Yup, still on, but they sure as hell resist it to death. I just got laughed at (literally) in front of a bunch of people when I asked for it (the sheet was in plain view in front of everyone), and the young dude yanked it out from my nose and said "Oh this isn't supposed to be there, since it's closed". When I demanded he honour the policy, he just laughed and said "no no it's closed, I won't give it to you" and when I asked for the manager, he said nobody's around; I asked him to call customer service, and he said "Oh you think it's open now? Haha".

I was like wtf, so I went straight home, to esso.ca and filed a complaint. To the earlier poster re: your brother and so on - I hope he wasn't an ass like this guy here. I understand being petty, and I'd have been willing to walk away if he politely explained that the policy is only valid during car wash operating hours (mind, nothing on the sheet said that, but hell, I'm willing to buy the BS of a polite person), but this was overboard. I hope he gets either fired or reprimanded, I'm almost tempted to go look for the manager tomorrow.

even if it's after wash operating hrs, you can still buy one ... it's just that you can't use it the same night.

i don't see how it's any diff. by much if you were given a free one b/c of the promo....

Not sure if it will come out of the worker's pay but I went into an Esso and waited for them to ask me if I wanted a car wash. There was a big line-up and by the time he got to me, he was tired and lazy and forgot to ask (probably figuring no one would ask for the free car wash anyways).... and then bam... RFD member!

He was caught off guard, smiles and was like "Do you really want a free car wash cause my boss is gonna give me sh**" I prefer washing my car by hand so I said nevermind and walked off. He seemed pretty happy afterwards. Bet you he didn't forget that line after me.

Asking if a customer wants a car wash is a company (corporate) directive. As an Esso employee, he is required to do so; and NOT doing so is NOT doing his job. But don't worry, he won't lose his job for not doing so a few times; but if he makes it a daily ritual, then yes, he DESERVES to lose his job.

I am sick of customer-oriented empolyees (those who have direct interaction with customers) who are rude to their customers. They don't deserve their jobs. I'd say if you've been treated badly, MAKE SURE you complain FORMALLY, so that jerk will pay for his stupidity.

It's not about a free car wash.
