Well we purchased a new canoe early this year and now I have the task of mounting it somewhere when the fall/winter season is upon us.
It's a 16ft one so it's not exactly small or light (67lbs). I was thinking some kind of pulley system on planks but not exactly sure how I would design it. Currently it's just sitting on some old blankets in the garage.
any ideas? thanks- sg

Buy a manual winch (20$ - 30$ at princess auto, a bit more at c-tire), some pulleys, a few 2x6 and some rope.
Put 2x6 on ceiling, attach pulleys to it (that way you know that they'll be secure), figure out where to mount winch and bingo, you've got a nice system. That's what I did for my big roof rack. It's great!

On a similar note, where does one buy those hooks for hanging bikes from the garage ceiling, and what are they called?
cheers

You can buy them at c-tire / home depot and they are called "Hooks for hanging bikes from the garage ceiling".

We hung ours from the ceiling. U-bolts with brackets around a couple of the joists, pulleys hanging from each bolt. Climbing rope gets tied around the bow and stern handles of the canoe, runs up and through the pulleys, and then down to the near wall where it's tied off to cleats. Works great!

$10 Home Depot, not from the ceiling though, mounted on the side wall

Nice one mate. Am guessing there is a stud where the screw is, and how many of those did you use for that bike? ;)

That bike is massive as I am 6ft "7 but it only needs one hook. The 2 wires in the picture are for security if you wanted to wrap around the bike and use a lock and the bike rests on rubber padding so no damage. It is mounted on a stud with 2 3" in screws. One for my bike and one on the other side for the wife's. $10 each Home Depot.

Re: the bikes, I find two of the standard screw-in $1 hooks you can find anywhere works just as well, if not better. I've been haning our bikes on them for years with no problems.

Well, definately can't hang a canoe on it's side... it'll warp over time.
I may just end up designing a pulley lever system (manual). I do like the bike idea though. Gave me some more ideas to free up some space in the ol'clutter bin.
