So I got my first ever NSF charge the other day (wrong account, blah blah blah)

The thing is it seemed quite high to me $75 from the retailer/service provider and then $35 from the bank.

Is that normal? What are the legal limits for those types of charges?

All I can say is OUCH:!:
That seems alot though.
I thought most retailers charge 30-40 bucks, but I guess they can charge what they want.

I also think most retailers charge $30 to $40. However, if the bank is charging $35 (last time, I paid attention to this was when the bank was charging $20 to $25), it is possible the retailer also increase the penalty.

Usually, they have their NSF penalty policy posted somewhere.

We charge commercial tenants $100 and residential tenants $30 per NSF cheque , but that's stipulated in their Lease Agreements.

Does the retailer post their NSF fee anywhere to alert customers? $75 does seem high.

$35 is a normal charge from the bank. I guess retailers can have their own charges, but $75 seems quite high. Maybe you can try calling your bank, and explaining it was an accident and have them reverse the $35 charge.

Complain to someone at the bank about the $35.00 NSF. Do it nicely and they might reverse/refund it. I work at a credit union and if someone comes in and explains the situation (and they haven't cheesed me off by being rude) I will often refund the fee.

Man am I glad I pay the $3 a month flat fee for $1000 over-draft protection. It's saved me a million times, and it gives me piece of mind now those odd times when the end of month and my pay day don't quite line up.

Last time I looked (probably 5 years ago) NSF was $25 from the bank and $25from the company that you shafted! With the total amount being around $100 for NSF it makes my $3 a month seem like an even smarter idea.

I don't really mind the bank charge...I mean...I deserve it in a way...it's the $75 from the retailer that's crazy high imo
