(Hope this is the right place and I am not a citizen or PR so I have no idea about it.)

I was told that if I get a job here for more than 6months I can get a health insurance card which will cover most health needs. But one of my friends was telling that if the company is offering some health insurance plans then I cannot use the health insurance card !! Is this true?? Because the company does not pay more than 50% in most cases. Don't we all not pay taxes to be eligible for that??

thanks

1)Not all companys offer a health plan.

2)If you do get a job with a health plan there is no reason to use your hospital card.

Your basic health card covers the very basics while health plans are higher in terms of what you get.

Are you talking about a regular health card that covers doctor visits, lab tests, etc.?

If you're in Ontario, you need to at least be a citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for a health card.

Eligibility

Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). To be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen or have immigration status as set out in Ontario's Health Insurance Act, and
make your permanent and principal home in Ontario, and
be physically present in Ontario 153 days in any 12-month period.

OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period. (http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohip_mn.html)

If you're not in Ontario, you should look at the requirements for whatever province is relevant to you.

Typically, work health insurance plans will cover extras (not covered by the Ontario health card) like dental, prescription drugs, hospital room upgrades, etc., but won't cover the basics (doctor fees etc. which are covered by the provincial health card). Unless your employer has experience hiring non-citizens/non-permanent residents, you would probably need to get a special plan to cover the basics.

Just one question.....if you are not a citizen, a permanent resident and obviously not a student, how are you entitled to employment in Canada and access to the health care system? Do you at least have a work permit?

Am I eligible for Ontario Health Insurance ?
You must have Ontario health insurance to use Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded health care services. You are eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if you are included under one of the following categories :

you are a foreign worker who holds a valid work permit or employment authorization which names a Canadian employer situated in Ontario and your prospective occupation and is valid for at least six months

That being noted, do you have a work permit less than or equal to the length of your post grad study here in Canada?

In that case if you do, and the minimum of six months have passed my understanding is you are eligible. I'd call Call the ministry INFOline at 1-800-664-8988

The answer is no. You have to be in any province for 3 months before which you are eligible for their health insurance. You will be eligible for the health insurance card of the province where you reside if you have been there for more than 3 months

I know that I am eligible :) But my question was

"But one of my friends was telling that if the company is offering some health insurance plans then I cannot use the health insurance card !! Is this true?? Because the company does not pay more than 50% in most cases. Don't we all not pay taxes to be eligible for that??".

Say I go to a hospital do I use the OHIP card or do I pay there and get it refunded by the company (in which case I have to shell out 50% from my pocket >:( ).

Atforum... I think you are confused as to which insurance covers what. OHIP covers doctors visits, hospital visits and stays (ward room only), tests, etc. The extended health benefits offered through your employer will cover things like drugs, dental work, glasses and semi-private or private hospital rooms. It will also generally cover other specialists like chiropractors, physiotherapists that OHIP does not cover, etc. I think is where you are confused. OHIP does not pay for the things that your extended health benefits from work will cover and vice-versa....
