Hello folks,

Am trying to do a walkway to the front door with steps, simialr to the one in the pic below, can someone please write up a detailed step-by-step layout of what needs to be done if you don't mind with all the materials we need to buy?

We feel we can do it ourselves, and don't see the need in bringing someone to do it.

Note: This is NOT our house. We just want to do a walkway similar to this !

Goto Chapters and read or buy their Home Depot Patio & Walkway DIY Guide or Google... there are tons of articles in laid out steps.

I don't need replies like these, refrain from posting in this thread with comments like these. Am basically asking those that have done it to shed some of their experience. Don't take it personally

Thx

Once you dig out the grass, I used something called Pea Gravel - not your convential 3/8" gravel, but I found that it leveled much more naturally, easier to dig and served the same purpose. You'll also need some rope to make sure that it's evenly leveled. Depending on the depth of your bricks, you'll need at least 2" of pea gravel underneath, and once laid, you'll want some sand/magic sand to seal and fill the gaps. The other thing you'll need are some supports for the brick, I chose to use 2" x 6" x 48" cement blocks (like beside your driveway) - this holds the bricks together. If you have 2" of pea gravel under this area and under the patio stones, you'll find that the water naturally drains very well with minimal heaving in the winter.

we dug down, about 4 inches lower than we wanted the top of the brick to be.
Two inches of gravel, then 1-2 inches of stone dust to level it further.
Stake a rope in the ground from one end to the other on either side of your walkway (level and straight, obviously) to keep your walkway level and straight.

We used flagstone, so we filled up the gaps with stonedust and packed back in around the outside edges with soil, where the grass eventually came back up.

Thanks for that, do you have any pics of your finished product, and what was the experience like?
