hi,

hey i turned 19 years old last month and now i want to want to get a credit card. I was wondering which company would be a good choice to start out with without having any credit history? and which one is better visa or mastercard?
i have a steady part time job working at Canadian Tire and i worked there for a little more than 1 1/2 years and earning about $10,000 - $12,000 a year. Last tax i did for 2006 i earned $10,239.65 total

If you have a bank account w/ any of the big banks, try applying there.

Or maybe the canadian tire credit card?

I had a hard time as well with no credit history so I went on a family members card. That does nothing for your credit score however once in "the system" the offers come quick and you can pick up a card rather quick.

As long as there is no fee you are good. Cash back or PC points for groceries are probably the best if you are a student. You have to spend a lot to make anything with airmiles cards, the good ones usually have fees. I like Visa myself; dislike amex out of principal as they usually charge the highest % to merchants. A mastercard clerk pissed me off over an $8 fee so I had to boycott them for life out of spite.

First card i got when i turned 18 was the TD GM Visa it has a simple $500 limit which was enough at that time. You dont really ahve to be a student to have a student Visa. They just have to think you are. I'v been out of school for 3 years and i still have a student Visa and a student bank account. :cheesygri

When I tried to get my very first credit card 8 years ago, I kept getting declined because I had 0 credit history and just started my first real fulltime job and had nothing of ownership in my name. I applied for a student card online even though I had already graduated. I got a very basic Visa through CIBC and started building my credit history from it. It builds very quickly and managed to get approved for other cards within months.

In my first yr university (i was 18), i obtained a student card with a $500 limit. Check w/ your bank to see which student cards are available.

i applied and got approved a student CC when i was 17. had a 500 cap for a year, ive worked my way up to 1500.

To the OP: i think mastercard with either BMO or PC financial is a good bet.
