View Full Version : New to mississauga - looking for gym

Hi All,
I was reading through all the posts on gyms on the forum and i seem to hear a lot of negative feedback about premier fitness.
I'm new to Mississauga and i really don't want to get conned by one of these gyms. I'm looking to sign up for a year (me and my brother) but i find their gym membership fee's to be expensive. I was quotes at $399 per person from premier fitness (1100 Burnhamthope W). I checked out the facility and i found it to be fairly decent. I also checked out McFit across the street (really didn't feel to comfortable there... have next to no weights and workout room is the size of my garage). I'm currently located close to Winston Churchill and Erin center. Let me know if there are any other gyms i could check out and their prices.
Any help would be appreciated.
I don't mind if you direct me to other threads as well. I'm up for a read. It's going to be a 1 year commitment at least and I'd rather work out in an environment i feel comfortable.
Thanks!

Not sure what its called..I think it's Family Fitness or something - AMC Plaza (QEW and Winston Churchill.) It does get fairly busy however, it is a large gym.

yup..that is the one i go to and it was called Family Fitness and now they are going to be changing the name to LA fitness. You can go on www.lafitness.com and check out their locations.
In Mississauga they are located at:
MISSISSAUGA SUPER CLUB
40 ANNAGEM BLVD
MISSISSAUGA, ON L5T 2Y3
(905) 696-6939
The GYM is pretty big and I pay $40 per month..it does get busy around 6 but dies around 8..so u can go in them if you want to avoid the rush..its an excellent gym imo. If u are feeling generous u can refer me and i could save $5 per month;)

This place use to be right on the corner of Winston Churchill and Dundas and now are a little further west near the movie theater. Its also 24/7 which is convenient compared to most gyms.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
The representative at premier quoted me $28 a month...
I'm aware of the horror stories now, but i can't help it... it's literally very close.
I went to family fitness (la fitness the other day). I found it to have a nice facility but it took me 15 min to drive down (one way). So i'm debating it for now. And yes if i do end up taking family fitness, i'll definitely say i was referred (any way i can help).
Let me know if you guys know of any other places and prices too. I'm working with a tight budget here.
Thanks in advance!

I live in Winston Churchill & Erin Centre area too, and I go to Family Fitness (now known as LA Fitness).
My location is actually in Oakville (2021 Winston Park Drive) - It's very close to 403 and Upper Middle Road, so it's usually 10 minutes or less to get there.
I'm paying $66/mth (me & my wife).

I went to Planet Workout at the old location....not familiar with the new one though (behind Silver City off Dundas and 403).
I switched to Good Life at Sussex Center (Erin Mills between 403 and Dundas...beside the WalMart). Esp good if you can get a corporate rate.

where exactly are you in Mississauga?
The gym i go to is ***used to be called Canadian bodyworks, but has been bought out by LA fitness. and is now known as LA fitness.
It's located in Brampton (Kennedy/Steels or 410/Steels)
so if you live really close to Brampton, this would be a good place.

If you go with Premier, offer to pay cash up front. In most cases it works out cheaper, and you dont have to worry about the cancellation hassles. I did it in my 2nd yr of membership at the Trafalgar/S. service location....worked out to be $300-$350 IIRC. ANd get them to throw in a couple free months...they all can.

I went back to premier the other day. The representative said 350 plus gst for one year. I know he can go lower but he won't budge (he's talked to his boss about this as well). And the only reason i know this is becuase i ran into another person during my trail day at the gym and he said he got in at $300.
Any ideas for a curveball??

Walk in and ask for 3 months extra to make it into a 15 month contract for 349+ GST. I did that today. Mind you I was renewing my membership, and I had to give the shpiel about them having to do a good job to retain customers.
I said I would think about their initial offer and shop around at the competition, which was 399+tax for just 12 months. As I got up to leave I said "how about throwing in some extra months to the contract." The guy said he would call me after talking to his manager. He then got called into the next office by the Manager who magically appeared as I was about to leave and OK'ed the deal.
It was pretty funny because, I overheard the Manager say "you dont wanna look silly over 50 dollars."
I'm content now, because after taxes I'm paying $24.66/month.
The person that got his annual due down to 300 will be paying $26.50.
Good Luck

does this include the $100 initiation? if it does, then it is a good deal. If not, I am just coming back from Premier at Meadowale Town Centre, and the offer I got is $368 + GST including the $100 initiation, paid upfront. This gives me access to Burnhampthorpe, Meadowale and Milcreek. It is not a gold membership, but i dont need access to anymore clubs anyhow.
PM me if you need the guy's name I talked to. This is part of their 50% off deal which only this location is giving out right now, valid till the end of this month. (i.e. Tuesday)
Edit : Renewal is $318 + GST a year with this plan

Thanks fellow RFDers for all the feedback.
Just wanted to update you all. I think I struck a really good deal with Premier Fitness for a gym membership. I signed up today for $368.50 (Gst included) for a silver membership (includes both Erin Center and Meddowvale town center locations). On top, i got 3 months of free membership as well.
So if i did the math correctly:
$ 368.50 / 12 months = $30.70
or $ 368.50 / 15 months = $24.56
If anyone is interested, feel free to PM me and i'll give you the contact of the sales rep.
Thanks once again.

1. Does the $368.50 include the $100 initiation fee as well? If so, this is a pretty decent deal for 15 months!
2. Did you pay the whole amount upfront? If you go with bi-weekly payment, you actually end up paying extra. I remember doing the calculations a while ago.
3. Which is your primary location?
4. Good job on skipping out on Family Fitness. I, too, find the distance (i.e. 15 min ONE WAY) overwhelming! I have a Premier Fitness about a 5 minute drive from my house (or a 10 minute bike ride).

Hey guys,
I've been browsing now for some time about what gyms to join in the GTA. I'm getting out of shape, but with the possibility of moving I didn't want to commit. Well for now, I'm probably moving from Oakville to Toronto, so Premier Fitness seems like the best option to join. I was burned HARD by Goodlife and I'll never go back, and McFit is too far away. I've read the horror stories that is Premier, but I plan on paying in full up front (in cash), and not signing up for any extras like PT or classes.
Anyways, I've been reading that some of you guys have received offers for $24.50 a month or $30.70 a month.
I just called and was quoted for $418.50 for the year, including that $100 assessment/joining fee. I plan on skipping over that test entirely, not wanting to be given false information on my body fat %, resting heart rate, etc. so they can pressure me into a trainer. Can you give me the name of the sales representative that you called? I assumed it doesn't matter if they're based out of different locations, although I could be wrong. My rep is named Amanda, and she's based out of the Oakville location (Iroquois Shore). I didn't ask for any discounts, and she said I'd have until Friday to redeem.
I'd love to be able to pay $30 or $25 a month for my gym fees, because I will only go about twice a week.
I hope it's not a problem that I will private message some of the members here. I just want to resolve this ASAP.
I'd like to finish by saying that I've browsed this site for a few months, but this is the first post I've made. There is a wealth of great finds here and I'd like to thank you all for posting them!

I've been through the treadmill with these guys as well (pun intended). What I have found is that they are all like car salesmen; they will give a little and then say they have to ask their manager when you come to a tentative agreement regarding price. Don't fall for it! In the past ten years or so I have cancelled memberships with Planet Workout and Family fitness (after going to both of them for a couple of years or so) and when they ask for my reason (they will always ask why you are leaving) I usually tell them it is because my financial situation has changed....they always come back with a song and dance that my health shouldn't be ignored because my financial situation has changed and that they could offer me a special deal because I am a valued customer.... blah, blah, blah. Bottom line is they always come back with an offer that is about 60% of what I was paying. I am not sure if they would offer the same deal (usually around $30 a month for someone who is thinking about renewing) but why not play hardball with them too? Tell them what you are willing to pay (must be reasonable) and then leave them your phone number. I am willing to bet that they meet your price except they will ask for additional fees (fitness testing which is just another ploy to get you to pay for personal training, or some other stupid fee such as $99 for a membership photo card). Just remember that you are swimming with sharks who will try to cost whatever they can into an agreement knowing that 80% of all members who join do not continue to train after 3 months or so (and I love these 80%, they make it affordable for those of us who train all the time). You can't imagine how crowded a gym would be if everyone who was a paying member showed up on any given day, you probably could not get a parking spot, never mind a turn at the smith machine.

I know man y have already stated La Fitness, seems they're the way to go, a friend of mine works for them & says they are buying up all kinds of gyms in Canada & their memberships allow you to access all locations for $33/ month. They also have many locations with boxing facilities and a few 24 hour locations.
This is great for me since I work out @ the Mississauga, Okville and occasionally the kitchener locations.
Also since La fitness took over they adopted a similar pricing sturcture as in the U.S. meaning there is no 1 year contract.

I may have to disagree with you about Family Fitness. I was a member there for a year ... I didn't like the Mississauga location -- too crowded, and the temperate was always COLD. I used to go to the Oakville location a lot, especially at night ... the temperature was okay, and the reason I used to go late at night was to avoid the rush. Those are just SOME of the reasons why I left from there. Another reason was that each location (Mississauga or Oakville) was a 15 minute drive away ... which is kinda useless as I'd want something close to home (i.e. Premier)

I wont start a new topic since my question is similar to what was asked already
I live near Erin Mills Town Centre, please recommend a gym near here. Since I dont own a car, it'd be best if it's within 20min biking distance (so about 5~10min drive)
So far I found:
Goodlife fitness in Loblaws.. but from the discussions I read, there seems to be a catch with Goodlife? What are their rates? Do they offer student discount?
The South Common gym operated by the city of Mississauga.. student rate is $40/month, or $108 for 3 months, or $28/month on a 1yr contract
I also remember seeing a gym in South Common Mall... Don't remember what it's called. If anyone knows about it please share ur infos..
I'm a student on a tight budget, please offer ur advices <(_ _)>

Thx for the contact of the sales rep, but I didn't get in touch with him. Instead, I managed to get a GOLD membership for $399+GST (paid in full) ... this includes a membership to ALL Premier Fitness location INCLUDING the Rogers Centre (the superclub locations are not included). So I figure I pay $35 (taxes in) per month .. includes the Assessment fee, a 3 month membership for a family member, and 2 week-long membership for family members.

nearest one I can think of is the community centre at Cawthra and lakeshore which has an ince rink and a gymnasium and a presume a fitness center?

I used to go there for 2 years. It ranks about average in all the things you mentioned. Less shady business practices IMO than the others like Premier. Hassle free, had no trouble not renewing. Of course like all gyms they try to really push their personal training on you when you sign up, but no biggie.
see if you can find someone with a corporate discount plan...Goodlife offers them to a lot of larger companies.

It's waaay closer than the Meadowvale Premier location but I was wondering if anyone's gone to this Anytime Fitness on Tenth Line? Busy? Does it have Squat/Power racks? Is the facility maintained well?

i'm with premiere fitness @ Dundas/dixie, it's got a basketball court, small swimming pool, kid's playzone, etc. boxing area's got extra fee...
me and my wife joined there when it first opened last year, and here's what we've got: for the price of silver membership, we both got gold membership, assessment fee waived, and free for first 2 months. considering that the gym was 2 min drive (5-10min walk), i think it was pretty good. The only mistake that i did was giving my credit card for monthly payments.
they've pissed me off twice since joining. they conned my wife into getting a trainer (it was her first gym) by using scare tactics (saying that she might not live long if she doesn't get a trainer to correct some bs, etc.). Which, i furiously asked them to reverse it on the same day. We were able to cancel it on the same day, but to my horror we still got billed for the first month's of something we've already canceled. we got our money back after a month of pestering them and the head office.
