A 75 year old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been thrust into the IT history books - with the world's fastest internet connection.
Sigbritt Löthberg's home has been supplied with a blistering 40 Gigabits per second connection, many thousands of times faster than the average residential link and the first time ever that a home user has experienced such a high speed.
But Sigbritt, who had never had a computer until now, is no ordinary 75 year old. She is the mother of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg who, along with Karlstad Stadsnät, the local council's network arm, has arranged the connection.
"This is more than just a demonstration," said network boss Hafsteinn Jonsson.
"As a network owner we're trying to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections. And Peter Löthberg wanted to show how you can build a low price, high capacity line over long distances," he told The Local.

Hehe, that's great but yes I think fibre will become more common place in the near future.
Basically ADSL is somewhat going to be phased out eventually. Cable and Fibre will be mainstream and ADSL will be the entry level.
As far as I know Verizon (FiOS) is the only N. American provider installing fiber into homes at the moment. You can get TV/Internet/Phone from the same connection. It's currently 30 Mbps Down and 5 Mbps Up. Similar to Shaw's Nitro Connection except Shaw limits upload to 1Mbps.

sweden has always had awesome residential internet connections.
some of you might have heard of BBB.
a few years ago, BBB connections were being used for slightly more nefarious purposes, although I wouldn't know anything about that...

A lot of places downtown have crazy fast internet. In the cityplace condos they have a special arrangement with telus where the suites are pre-wires for 100Mbit internet. I've seen people regularly downloading at more than 5,000kB/s... not even close to maxing their connection out

Bull*****. She may have a 40gig connection to her provider at the moment but, I'll bet her provider doesn't have the bandwidth to support more than 1 user at that speed and once someone else hops on the switch they'll have to share that bandwidth.

I use to live down there in the original Matrix buildings. I was one of the first to move in. If I remember correctly, it was $49.95 a month and blazing fast. Fastest I downloaded via a webpage was 25mbs. I'm sure it would have went faster but the downloaded ended.
