Ok, so I have been trying to improve myself in many different aspects by becoming more proactive in my life.

And, As it stands, I am starting to get in trouble at work. Somehow, I find a sort of disconnect from other people working there, as they're always talking about how much they drank over the weekend, and why they don't have time to do anything, and usual bickering about everything and everyone else....

Its getting to the point that they want me fired, so how do I resolve this? I know its good to change yourself according to your audience, but I don't drink, and don't go to bars, and I can't bash anyone, its just my nature to be positive..

On the side story, Since last year, I have been able to get myself out of introverted shy self to more open extraverted personality and to do that I have undertaken many challenges like joinning various social groups, toastmaster club, and doing everything that I can do to improve myself.

I'm actively trying to improve my life, and I don't boast to anyone about it, its just that I like to get advice from others on this topic, so is it wrong to talk about this things to other people..

Why do they want to fire you? Because you don't join in the water cooler chat???

If you were a good worker, why would anyone care if you chatted with other people or not?

Could it be you're just annoying with all your motivational talks and just ticking people off?

could also be that I'm the only indian guy working in a french place, and the only guy actually going to university.

Almost all my coworkers are college dropout, and most of them want to start school again, but they never have time, so maybe I guess I shouldn't talk about school...

But I can't control my life, its not my fault I'm going to university..

I don't understand this "talking about motivation, self improvement at work place". Are you preaching to your co-workers to improve themselves?

They want you fired because you don't drink?

What do you do for a living?

Its great that you're improving yourself, just don't project too much on other people.

Most people find that as annoying as if you were to say

" I'd like to talk to you about Jesus Christ."

People will run.

The company I work for is NCR, they repair casino machines, we pretty much only have to take care of the warehouse, and control inventory, very easy and repetetive job...

Biggest disconnect I find is that I'm different. while everyone else is quebecoise, I'm south indian.

I have very good english communication and they don't understand any word of it, so I try to talk to them in french, but its a big challenge, when they're already categorized you even before commencing any conversation...

How to fight descrimination? its a very long and hard battle....

Relax bro, they don't give a rat ass if you speak French or not. What they really care is, you have to slow down a bit.

They don't like show off, or people work any harder than it's required. It makes them look bad, know what I mean.

BTW, in Québec, Thursday is called little Friday. Meaning leaving work early have a few drinks with your buddies.

motivate people, what I said was I can't bicker about other people, and can't talk about booze...But i'm all for talking about girls, and the whole package that goes along with it, its just that I am very active and don't mind sharing my experiences with others...
I don't tell them to do what I do, they can decide that for themselves...

the biggest problem I see on my workplace, not to mention we spend more time chatting away then doing the work...The work is for two guys but we have four, so you see how this could go wrong with so much extra time on side...

It's not as bad as religious evangelism, but it's pretty close in the irritation sweepstakes.

no wonder they want you fired, from your posts here thus far, you seem to already look down at them because they are college drop outs or arent as "proactive" as you in self improvement.

you definitely sound that you suffer from narcissism with how you look down upon them. instead of reflecting on why you do not fit into the team, you are blamming the other people there.

and shoving motivational and self improvement talk down people's throats gets annoying quickly. so just keep your mouth shut about all the wonderful self improvement things you are doing and less judgemental. you dont have to partake in the co-workers outside work activities (eventhough that is counterconstructive to work place morale and team building), but you'll be a lot less disliked if you just stop talking about how you are different from them at work.

better on the contraire my friend, as everyday I ask them to give me advice on almost everything, and thank them on their input, and actually practice whatever they say...

I recognize that everybody have something to offer and I am very receptive to whatever they say, I don't boast about who I am, but I do recognize my difference, and try to also relate to them by doing the things they are doing...

The thing about self improvement is that it's a personal thing and you shouldn't try to preach to a flock especially if they don't show any interest in it. You've already tested the waters and they are simply not interested in hearing it. So keep on working on yourself and keep the talk simple at work.

Just like anything, you'll have to approach things/people the right way.

The way you are doing it, people will just think you are wierd, not cool, obnoxious, paranoid, etc, etc...

Go and have a drink with the guys, sit down and relax, and then conversation will take care of itself.

+1 to all.
If they don't want to have a conversation with you outside the job then just do you job. Why do you care so much about what they think of you? It's a place to work, but if you could make friend with your co-worker then it's a bonus. Otherwise, let them be.

they already have a group set, and I'm just pretty much an outsider going in.
They've been working here for some time now, so I'm trying to be more friendly but its really hard, when they get in their french conversation mode. This is when, I find myself outside looking in, its even worse because I could potentially talk to them in french too, but it just takes out a lot of vocabulary from my stories, and considering I'm south indian, they pretty much ignore me thereafter....
