We're going up for a weekend, mostly at the cottage but we'll be going up earlier than the rest. Any recommendations for:

good hiking, antiquing, places to eat?

Bancroft is famous for its quarries, which contain all sorts of minerals. It is especially known for its supplies of the rare gemstone sodalite. You can go quarrying (I think that's the term) yourself and go digging around and there's several stores in town that sell gemstones and such. There are a few provincial parks in the general area too.

There's also some sort of lookout point where the locals like to go. It's called Eagle Point(?) something or other.

Why settle for a "point", Daniel, when you can see everything from "Lookout Mountain"?

Sorry, had to add that with your Decepticon avatar.

weird..i was just logging in to post when is the best time to see the fall colours in the Bancroft area? and saw this thread. We are going to do some rock hunting. My husband & son went a couple of years ago and had a great time. He said there isn't much in Bancroft itself though. If you're there in August, this may be of interest:

Palmer's Rapids is nearby - very nice area for kayaing, canoeing, swimming and hiking.
Check out all the rocks...lots of stores sell gemstones, and I believe there are caves nearby that you can go on tours through.
The Eagle's Nest is the lookout point, very nice up there too.
And, if you check out the old cemetary, you can see a ton of my ancestors...although with grandpa there to tell the stories that go along with each headstone, I guess it wouldn't be as interesting lol.

Start researching and booking now! Fall colours hit their peak in early-mid October. From memory, there were a lot more coniferous trees up there than deciduous though. Algonquin Park about 45-60 minutes to the north has spectacular fall colours too.

:arrowu:

I have a cottage lined up on Baptiste Lake, just need to give them a date. Would Thanksgiving weekend be good? Want colour and not too cold for the kids to go rock hunting.

PS sorry didn't mean to hijack the OP's thread! :D
