View Full Version : Registering a Dog With a Microchip

Hello. I hope someone might be able to shed some light on this situation.

I recently was given a dog from a very distant acquaintance who wanted to part with the pet for some reason unknown to me. The biggest problem was that I wasn't given any information in regards to the dog's history, but I decided to take her because the previous owners couldn't find anyone they knew to take the dog away; and I know that because the dog is old the animal shelter would put her down if no one adopted her after a couple weeks. I couldn't let that happen.

Today, I brought the dog in to a vet to have a checkup and a rabies shot done. The vet checked to see if the dog had a microchip since I had no knowledge of it, and it turns out she does have a chip embedded under her skin. The vet said I could re-register the chip and have the ownership change to me; however, I'm paranoid that the previous owners could end up reporting her lost and claim her away from me.

I've had the dog for over 2 months now.

What if I call in to register her chip, and I find out that the dog is reported stolen and they accuse me of stealing her?

Do I need consent from the previous owner to change the registration to my name and address?

Has anyone here had to change registration information after adopting a pet?
