Excellent. Another fellow Koppite along with Steinbok! With the current string of bad luck with strikers, I am still a tad worried about Torres. There might be too much pressure for him to produce right away. I just hope he doesn't pull a Cisse!!!
Top 4 will be Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U and Tottenham (in no particular order), I think. Arsenal is done :)

Owen will do alright. But you Liv'pool boys better keep yer eyes open for us Villans! lol. Im looking forward to this season so much, now that we have MON, he'll work some magic. I didnt like selling stephen davis, but it had to be done for NRC, and Harewood is a good backup for Carew. We need 1 more starting striker (we lost 2) and 1 defender. I cannot WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew I would draw the Gunners fans out of the wood. :) I don't mind Arsenal, ok, not as much now anyway. But losing Henry is a huge blow. I enjoy watching Febragas' play a lot. Baptista is going back to Real, right? *That* I think is just as big of a blow as losing Henry because of the whole Reyes thing left a sour taste to the fans mouths

I will rate Villa this year, now that they finally have some deep pockets backing them up. But, I dont think they will crack top 5.
I have always had a soft spot for Owen and yeh, he scored a goal in his first match the other day against Hartlepool. Ameobi added 2 as well. Things may be looking up for the Toons, but hey it is a long season.

I hope that Tevez deal falls through. We don't need him.
It will be Man Utd fighting it out with Liverpool. Torres is gonna be brilliant for the Reds. That's the guy we should have been going after. Torres and Rooney would have been unbeatable.

Yeah, I like the Torres deal..and now we finally have some good options up front. Kuyt, Torres and Crouch. I really hope Pennant actually does something that will show why we bought him this year. He showed some flashes of brilliance last year.
I really hope LFC gets off to a good start this year..last few years have been agonising watching them fall to the bottom ten only having to then work their way up to form. I think all these Champions League qualifiers tires the fook out of them.

Are you implying that Carrick didnt have a good year? Maybe he started out slow, but he ended up playing well towards the end of the year. But our Canadian boy Owen-H will do great for Man Utd. Liverpool does have a pretty good chance at a treble since Rafa likes to use a rotation and he has a deep team. You need to do that or else all your top guys get burnt out at the end of the season. Man Utd had nothing left for the semi final UCL and FA Cup final. I hope Sir Alex learns that this year.

He's been decent. He doesn't have the stat to show for because he's a holding mid, which I have no problem with it. I appreciate those kind of players alot, and also defensive-mid as well. I like Hargreaves because of his fantastic work rate. He doesn't play in a position that gets noticed a lot in terms goals and assists. Yet he still get noticed because of his hard work. That says something. That said though, he's now a Man U player so the Liverpool side of me hope he'll flop. :D
As for Carrick... for his price tag, his performance was subpar especially he literally stumbled out of the gate at the beginning

West Ham is doing some strange thing. Tevez is as good as gone. I am surprised they let Harewood go. Admittedly I don't follow them all that much. What's the scoop with Harewood anyway? Was he forcing his way out, the other way around, or what? But hey, at least he's switching to Villa so he doesn't really need to change shirt. (their shirts look so similar, IMO!!)

The Tevez saga seems to be over very soon, if not already,, with West Ham releasing him from the contract. I am very curious what the final figures are for the exchange/compensation and all.
I guess Man U was very confident that the agreement will be reached (or the ruling will be in their favour) for selling Rossi, and now Smith. Not that Smith would be all that useful anyway. But Rooney, a healthy Saha, and now Tevez, that's a dangerous trios

I have no idea. But somehow the Premiership has attracted lots of tycoons buying off teams. My guess is that the Premiership is still on relatively even ground.
Look at the Prima Liga, there is Barcelona and Real. It's almost like teams are fighting for the 3rd place year in year out. They are deep pocketed and it's hard to compete from anew. Seria A is still hampered by the big scandal and it might scare off a lot of potential buyers. And I think the Italians have too much pride to let people from other country just buy their teams. To me, the Italian leagues are sitll sketchy and there might be a lot of things going on at the background. I just don't think Bundesliga is attractive enough for a big world stage at the moment. That leaves the leauge that has only 2 teams (Rangers and Celtics), and Premiership... That's just my guess

EPL is awash with money, that is why you are seeing so much movement. Players are looking to join the EPL to boost their salary. Teams outside of the top 4 are looking to do whatever they can to stay up in the EPL. It's just crazy. Managers like Sven is buying players left right and centre, without even going to see them play. It's just buying whoever you can and hoping you find the jackpot. I just hope teams don't end up like Leeds and overspend, then end up almost folding. You never know what foreign ownership will do once they start bleeding money and may be playing in tier 2.

Greetings my fellow soccer fans, more so for the Reds!! ;)
I have just been lurking around, figured i will start contributing closer to when the games begin. It can get pretty addictive here lol.
Anyway, couple of things i can point out here:
1. Villa Vs Liverpool game will be live on Setanta Sports.
Free preview as follows (until Sept 10) :
- Rogers Channel# 429
- Bell Channel# 420
2. T-DOT & NDman are correct, Carson WILL NOT and CANNOT play against Liverpool as per the rules of FA. It was like that last season as well when he was on loan at Charlton.
It sucks that we will have to pay like $15 for Setanta, but on the bright side, between Setanta, Sportsnet, Score, we will pretty much get all the premier league games.

Take it from me, never ever order the shirts directly from england to here. Because you will end up paying alot more after shipping and duties. I used to do that for the past 3 yrs and my jerseys would end up costing like $150 each!!! The best way to do it is mail it to someone (family/friend) in England and ask them to ship it.

Wow. Terrible game by Tottenham. Big credits to the Sunderland boys. Roy Keane sure was a cool cucumber for his first victory in the premiership as a manager. Barely any emotion on the goal. Surprising
Crap, i didnt watch it! I fell asleep...but yes, i think Sunderland might just be one of the black horses this season. Keane as seriously done wonders with that team and i wouldnt actually be surprised if they even end up in Europe at the end of this season.
Alright, time to get ready for the one that matters now...:D

Agreed with Steinbok. If you don't have friends or families there, you'll likely get hit hard. And another advantage of having accomplice there is that they can go look for you and often, you'll find heavily discounted, authentic, shirts sometimes. I got my '00 Liverpool homekit for 20 pounds, directly from the Anfield store (my sister was visiting my now brother-in-law). That was in the summer though

I wouldnt say it costs that much. I find that I can get the badges and player lettering from oversees, which is much much harder to do here. I saw the other day in Toronto a store charging $50 for EPL lettering, with no badges. I just ordered the new Man Utd shirt from Old Trafford. It costs me $51GBP, which included lettering (Hargreaves 23), Community Shield badges, and shipping. So it's like $110Cdn. Even with taxes at customs, I expect my total cost to be $125-$130. A similar shirt here would cost $165 plus 14% tax. :cheesygri

ENJOY and i wouldnt be a red if i didnt end this by saying:
YNWA!!! Go Reds!
(hahaha...talk about a spelling blunder that can haunt you forever!!) Thanks T-DOT

Not a great game by any stretch. And admittedlly, Liverpool got a few calls their way, enough to have Martin O'Neil and Barry fuming. But it's the first game of the season and it always get people riled up. Like Steinbok said, at the end, it's the result matters.

Last year, before I discovered a site that lists all the matches (Sopcast, etc), I relied solely on the built-in channels with Sopcast and it was predominantly Chinese stuff. Yeah, I'm used to it. Just saw the Chelsea-Reading highlight too. Drogba's goal was decent. But I think his flick to Lampard that resulted in the first goal was more impressive. Pure pitch awareness.
Did anyone see Becks' first goal as a Galaxy off a free kick? While it was pretty nice (typical Beckham with high accuracy but not a whole lot of power), what the heck was the keeper thinking? You don't move the wrong way on a free kick that is 20+ yards out. Yikes.

Quotes of the week from the EPL:
The Quotes Of The Week
Posted 14/08/07 13:40EmailPrintSave
This week's verbal wonders...
* "Hold on. I think I've got a tenner here somewhere..." - Chris Hutchings is told that he is the bookies' favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked.
* "I didn't do anything about the way they were going to shape up before the game and I moved too many people around in the second half. It would probably have been best left alone" - Alan Curbishley reflects on another impressive day's work.
* "There was, and still is, a lot of unhappy players at the club who don't like him. I am one of them and he knows that, and that is why I left the club. I know there a lot of players who don't think he is any good. I am sure that is one of the main reasons Carlos Tevez didn't stay at the club, and also why Darren Bent refused to sign for West Ham. It was because of the manager" - Paul Konchesky pays tribute to the inspiring West Ham manager.
* "The other players think I'm a weirdo as it is. I was scorned this week for saying I hated Big Brother. I can't think of anything more boring than watching people sitting in a room. Comments like that don't go down too well" - Robert Green reveals the highbrow camaraderie inside the West Ham dressing room.
* "It's great to be back in the Premiership - even the smell of the hot dogs is great" - Steve Bruce. Are hot dogs not available in the Championship then?
* "My fans want to see my wedding dress" - Coleen McLoughlin explains why she and Wayne Rooney are planning to sell pictures of their wedding to a magazine.
* "I spent 100 days, coming in at nine, not leaving until five, working, working, working. I did everything I was told to do and I gave it 100 per cent all the time" - Petr Cech confirms he found out how 99% of the population lives as he recovered from his head injury last year.
* "I think visiting goalkeepers must be man of the match at our ground more than at any other" - Sir Alex feels sorry for himself after Reading's Marcus Hahnemann denies ManYoo a first-day win.
* "I read I'm cracking up under the pressure. I think it's linked to the fact I had to have an ECG for my life insurance" - Arsene Wenger.
* "It's easier, of course, when you have the money, it's much easier" - Sven Goran Eriksson reveals the secret to successful management.
* "A good start is good" - Sven announces the good news.
* "It can only be stupid people who say I would sign players I did not know anything about" - And gives his critics short shrift after his new Citeh side pummel West Ham.
* "My daughter's only six, but she's starting to get her head around figures like minus 15 now" - Leeds chief executive Shaun Harvey.
* "Not only have they taken my arms and legs off, now they've cut my balls off as well" - Dennis Wise provides inadvertent justification for Leeds' 15-point deduction.
* "I look at the place [Liverpool] not as a city, but as a country in itself" - Jamie Redknapp tries to sound clever.
* "Yes" - The response of Bolton chairman Phil Gartside upon being asked if the club's reputation had been besmirched by that Panorama investigation.
* "I thought we had gone a bit stale and needed a change. The fans were looking for a change. They were a bit bored with our style of football" - Gartside continues to put the boot in as he reflects on Sam Allardyce's departure.
* "Boring" - Martin Jol's sour verdict on Tottenham's date with Sunderland. Would he have said the same if Spurs had scored a last-minute goal?
* "I was excited, and it takes a lot to get me excited...ask my wife" - Roy Keane explains his, erm, limp response to Sunderland's late winner.
* "All the manager said was 'Well done and I'll see you at 10am for training"' - Michael Chopra.
* "The fans for live their football and every taxi driver seems to know me" - Roque Santa Cruz gets settled in at Blackburn.
* "Jens is always liable to do something silly" - Lawrie Sanchez makes note of Fulham's first-minute gift at Arsenal.
* "He's certainly the happiest boy in the dressing room tonight" - Wenger on Lehmann's lucky escape.
* "If the World Cup were to go to Europe, I'm quite sure, with the English luck as it is, they won't get it. There are moves to give it to England. I must fight that. Nobody in Europe likes England. England invented the sport but has never made any impact on world football" - Fifa vice-president Jack Warner makes himself popular.
* "It's hard to believe the season has already started. It seems like only yesterday that I was counting down for it to be over so I could do nothing for a few weeks. Actually, I'm not very good at doing nothing - it's a very inefficient use of time, which isn't the done thing in the Motherland. If the only thing I have to do is get the towels at 5am, I tend to go a bit stir crazy. So I worked all summer, even when I was on my holidays. But by the time I got home I was getting the serious itch for a kickabout, so I went along with a mate who plays seven-a-side in South London. Nobody knew who the hell I was, so there wasn't any danger - and after a few weeks without kicking a ball, my touch gave nothing away. I think they just assumed I was some kind of exchange student" - Fulham right-back and Times columnist Mortiz Volz is now officially F365's favourite footballer.

It has already begun. Sir Alex has taken notice and pleaded "protection" for Ronaldo and his other star players. Same goes to Drogba too, to a certain extent. He's a very smart player and just knows how and when to dive (and hand balls sometimes)

I thought both teams played like crap. Germany was way worse in the first 30 minutes that they just let England run free (more so than Englanding playing well, really. A lot of passess were off and clearly lacked rapport). The only guy I enjoyed the whole match was Micah Richards. Surprised that he was put at the full-back but he did very very well. Micah Richards can play all defensive positions, but his favourite is centre-back. However, Terry and Ferdinand have those spots locked up, though I think Ferdinand needs to play better to deserve it. With Gary Neville in his 30s now, Micah will take over at right back soon enough. "This approach is more balanced. It is not a radical revolution, but more of a mediocre reform which breathes fresh air into the competition," another senior UEFA source said....

Naw, I think the commentators for the match on the weekend hit the nail right on the head when he said that Ronaldo isn't there pumping the ball up the pitch full steam. I think you will see a different United after his suspension is up.
Case in point, the commentator made those comments as Scholes was bringing up the ball on the counter attack, but instead of running it ahead looking to pass to anyone open, he just stopped on the middle of the pitch and weighed his options.
Ronaldo and Tevez isn't a bad combo until Rooney and Saha are back. I think having another Striker would be beneficial for Champs League to add some depth.

I think Benitez is a great coach. His rotation system is good. But we really need another striker for depth. During our treble run, we had 4 strikers (Cole, Yorke, Sherringham, Solskjaer). Even with everyone healthy, we only have Rooney, Saha and Tevez, with Solskjaer retired. Rossi shoulda stayed. It really showed last year that we had no depth at the end of the season. We had nothing left when we played AC Milan at SF of Champions League and Chelsea in FA Cup Final. C'mon, let's get another striker!!!!

Honestly though, it was expected...but I am glad that the Red's delivered on that expectation. Although, I still say that the luckiest team so far in the league has been Chelsea! I bet they are just glad to be over and done with playing at Anfield and getting their completely undeserved 1 point!
On another note, I wouldn't bet on Jol just yet, Sammy Lee definitely is up for that challenge as well! ;)

Ouch. Just got home and looked at the scores, 'pool by 6. I also taped the Hotspur - Fulham match.

On to tomorrow, I hope the Blues can carry on their good luck without Lampard in the lineup.

Great wkend of football as usual. Devils got by a very determined Sunderland squad, who were playing their best for Keano. Liverpool look like world beaters, very impressed with their squad. Torres shoulda been a Red Devil, since we've been chasing him for years. I would have much rather spent the money on him than that stinky Tevez. Sir Alex will regret this mistake. Chelsea's luck is about to end also. Arsenal is still a good team, with class. The title race will be the best yet!

End of 1st half of the Man Utd vs Villa game, 3-1 for the Devils!! I thought Villa would have put up more resistency so far. But another half to go.
As for Liverpool this morning, they are soooooo damn lucky. Two penalties saved Rafa's arse. The commentators were dead-on though, taking Gerrard off with 20 mins to go in a 1-1 game makes absolutely no sense at all. He was playing really well too. If they didn't pull out the game at the end, Rafa would have been roasted in the press.

Arsenal this year is a very different team from Arsenal last year.
Look at what Wenger has managed with a team of youngsters, last few seasons i think they relied too much on Henry and now that he has left, the pressure falls on the team as a whole to perform.
I think Arsenal sort of half tanked 2 seasons or so to develop their youngsters, and now they are reaping the benefits.
And on the topic of that particular game, wow Anderson is sure a faker! Rolled on the floor multiple times after a slight tackle then got back up like nothing had happened after Fabregas got the card.

I imagine they will be on Setanta Sports. Channel 429 on Rogers. They pretty much have all the games except a Sat 10am game on Sportsnet and a Sun 11am game on Score.

Not sure what happened to the EPL thread.
Very interesting 5th round of FA Cup. Man Utd demolished Arsenal. Liverpool lose to a second division team. Looks like that will be it for Rafa. They're gonna get smoked by Inter Milan and then no more trophies to go after. Looks like it will be Man Utd vs Chelsea in the final this year again.

Meh, yeah, Manchester Utd beat an under-maned Arsenal squad in the FA Cup draw (not to mention Eboue and Toure just coming back from African Nations Cup), but Arsenal are still a full 5 points ahead of Man U in the EPL. Though a tough test for the Gunners coming up for the Champions League to play against AC Milan.

What happened to the EPL thread? Nothing. Just a lot of Liverpool fans (myself included) have been hiding and sulking with the piss poor run of form lately. If they can't redeem themselves through Champs League to get some respectable results, even then would make a tall order with the current team and form, Rafa is doomed.

The curiosity got the best of me. I was trying hard not to watch the Arsenal highlight but ended up watching the clip on Match of the Day 2. Man, that was a horrible horrible injury. WAY worse than Jason Kendall (baseball player for those who don't know) few years ago. I cringed when I watched that. What a horror show.
Not to put the guy down, but it could very well be a good ending if Eduardo can walk normally after this. All the best to him

it was a bad tackle on eduardo, but there have been worse ones, it looked like taylor got eduardo right in the right place for him to sustain that kinda injury, I really hope eduardo can make a full recovery and play again, cisse has broken his leg twice and still managed to play

I agreed. The chellenge wasn't as vicious as Wenger made it out to be. it was a bad one and definitely hit Eduardo at the most vulnerable area right below the shin guards and above the boots. Hope he'll pull a Cisse or Bullard and make full recovery

"Club releases statement with update on Eduardo injury
...
Earlier today (Monday 25th February), the Orthopaedic surgeon and Arsenal medical staff assessed the extent of the damage and possible time scale for a full recovery.
All being well, Eduardo will have his leg in plaster and using crutches for the next six to eight weeks. After that time, partial weight-bearing exercises will be scheduled into a slow rehabilitation process.
It is hoped that Eduardo will be running again in six months time and making a full recovery after nine months.
Eduardo will be released from hospital in a few days..."

That Man Utd game was ridiculous. Ref was so out of it. Several penalty calls that he didn't call. It was like a hockey game out there. Body-checking is now allowed in English football.
I hope Barnsley will win it.

1) Manchester United: 31GP, 73 points
2) Chelsea: 31GP, 68 points
3) Arsenal: 31GP, 67 points
That, is a DISGUSTING sight. After today's loss against Chelsea, Arsenal has now dropped to third, and now 6 points behind Manchester United. Arsenal have had 4 straight draws and today's loss, meaning they haven't won in 5 straight matches. UGH  .

damn. Out of the top 4 teams in the Prem, Arsenal and Chelsea are my fav. I feel terrible for Arsenal for choking the lat few weks. GL to them in the Champions league though. I didnt want Man U to win today, but Im glad Mascherano got red carded, I hate that guy. Especially for that stunt on Aliadiere (sp) from Middlesbrough. Mascherano should have got carded as well that game.

They've got themselves to blame by throwing points away against lesser sides (No offence to Birmingham, Middlesborough, & Wigan).
Wenger should be one to blame for not strengthening the "centre-back" position before the transfer deadline.
Why could one (forgot who the centre defender was) miss that "long-ball" header that led to the tying goal by Chelski?
Apparently, this will be another trophyless season and Flamini will be Edu II soon... >:(

Disappointment aside (being a Liverpol fan), this season has been a treat to watch. Championship was right down to the last game, well, sort of... and the relegation battle was a lot of fun in teh last 3-4 games of the season!
Hopefully Liverpool can shake off the turmoil this off season and get things back in order. Arsenal is going to have a tough off-season, it seems. Flamini is gone. And the Adebayor watch is already on!
